Retaining wall collapses for the second time - May 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

For the second time in less than six months, a retaining wall on a construction site collapsed, causing a scare among workers and damaging construction equipment on Sunday in Derebail here. Fortunately, unlike the incident on November 20, when the mudslide killed a worker and injured five others in the same construction site, the incident on Sunday resulted in no loss of life.

Were just lucky this happened on a Sunday. Only around 15 workers were on the site at the time, where as at least 60 workers are present on weekdays, said Babul, a construction worker from Orissa. Essel Heights, being constructed opposite Derebail Church by K2K Constructions, abuts a hill (on top of which the A.J. Shetty Hospital sits). Workers said an iron mesh had been constructed along the carved out hill and had been filled with concrete recently. However, around 10.30 a.m., the wall and large portions of the mud behind it collapsed. We heard a cracking sound, and saw a crack extend from the bottom of the hill to the top. We started running away, and in a matter of seconds, the mound collapsed, said a construction worker.

Supervisors at the site blamed the dampness of the mud as the concrete on the wall was still being cured for the slide.

Part of retaining wall in Bukit Serdang 7 collapses - May 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Part of a retaining wall in Bukit Serdang 7, which had earlier showed signs of erosion, collapsed while reconstruction work was being carried out.

Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah said the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) discovered the erosion around the wall which is located near Jalan BS 7/7.

It then appointed a contractor to repair the wall, but the wall collapsed when work was 90% completed.

We are still investigating the cause and will check if the contractor had failed to adhere to the project specifications.

A small shrine located at the top of the slope could have also slightly hindered the work, Ean Yong said.

He added that the initial cost to repair the wall was less than RM20,000.

MPSJ deputy engineering director Azizah Baharon said the affected stretch was estimated to be 6m long and 3m high.

The wall was formerly a rubble wall and had been rebuilt to be a reinforced concrete wall.

We will ask the same contractor to rectify the slope and revert to a rubble wall, she said.

Ean Yong has also asked MPSJ to blacklist the contractor.
