Retaining wall in Bukit Gambier collapses (Updated) - May 30, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

GEORGE TOWN (May 29, 2013): A large part of a retention wall at a housing project in Bukit Gambier collapsed after heavy rain on Tuesday night, triggering fears of a major landslide.

In the10.40pm incident some 30m of the 3.5m tall wall near Halaman Bukit Gambier fell, frightening residents.

Company director Jeevan Rajoo, 37, whose house is nearest the wall said: "I heard a loud sound, and I thought it was an earthquake."

When he checked, Jeevan discovered a lamp post had fallen across his sister-in-law's car parked opposite the house.

The retention wall had been built by the developer of an apartment and bungalow housing project nearby.

A spokesman for the developer said remedial work was being carried out on the damaged wall and that the company would pay for repairs to the car.

Yesterday two backhoes started work on the wall.

Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer and Batu Uban assemblyman Dr T. Jayabalan arrived there about 11am to observe the situation.

Jayabalan, told media he and Rayer would investigate why the retaining wall had collapsed and probe illegal land clearing in Bukit Gambier.

"There will be no cover up on this matter," he said, adding that a stop-work order had been issued to the housing project developer two months ago to allow mitigating works to be carried out before construction continued.

GEORGE TOWN: A 20m portion of a retaining wall collapsed after a heavy downpour in Halaman Bukit Gambier 1 in Gelugor at 10.40pm on Tuesday.

Concrete and earth from the collapsed wall brought down a lamppost that toppled onto a car, barely touching a three-storey corner house.

The debris also brought down part of fencing which was erected by a housing project developer.

The car belonged to the sister-in-law of the house owner, company director R. Jeevanathan, 37, who expressed shock over the incident.

Sanjeevan was looking after his son in the living room when he heard a loud thud.

"There was a slight tremor and I was stunned when I saw that the retaining wall had been brought down by red earth.

"My sister-in-law's car was slightly damaged. There was crack to the windscreen and scratches to the bonnet," he said at the scene.

    Retaining wall thoughts
I am thinking about adding a low divider wall across the top. This would help control grass and weeds and maybe add a place to put a few potted flowers/plants.

Retaining wall collapses at Gwinnett Co. home - May 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Rescuers freed a construction worker at a Gwinnett County home after a retaining wall collapsed on him on Tuesday afternoon.

Captain Tommy Rutledge says the Gwinnett County Fire Technical Rescue Team was called to the home on Camp Branch Road in Buford. He says the man was trapped in a ditch along the back of the house, and he was pinned face down against the foundation of the home by a large piece of concrete and dirt.

Technical rescue technicians were able to free the man using air bags to lift the concrete and shoring equipment to stabilize the area. Rutledge says that was necessary to prevent any further collapse. Firefighters used a small opening to treat the man and communicate with him until he could be pulled out.

There's no word yet on the extent of the man's injuries. Rutledge says he was being transported to the hospital, but is conscious and able to communicate with firefighters.
