Contractors building the Sellwood Bridge have to dig-out significant parts of a newly-poured concrete wall, following technicalproblems.
When large structures like the retaining wall along SW Macadam are poured, big vibrators help the wet concrete settle getting rid of anybubbles.
But contractors Slayden and Sundt had some issues with their vibrators and now there are some unconsolidated areas of concrete along one patch of thewall.
Mike Pullen with Multnomah County says the contractors will have to remove the problem areas and replace it on their own dime, This will not affect the strength of the wall. Itll possibly be even stronger with the new concrete Im told and they do have tools like ultra-sound that are used to make sure there arent any hidden voids in the concrete, hesaid.
Pullen says the project is still on-time and on budget, with the bridge scheduled to open in late2015.

Emergency crews responded to Harbor Drive and Y Drive along the waterfront at about 8:30 p.m.
Witnesses said the 4-year-old Muskegon boy came down the hill by the YMCA, went across the street, went down the hill some more, fell off his bike and hit his head on a retaining wall.
Police said the child was unable to stop.
Seventeen-year-old Ben Schultz of Wyoming said the child was halfway over the wall, about to fall into the water, when he grabbed the boy's legs and brought him back to safety.
Schultz said the boy's father ran up and carried the child back across Harbor Drive, where he was met by paramedics and police.
The child suffered a head injury and was transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.
No further information was available on the child's condition.

July 18, 2014 VDOT begins repairs to retaining wall on U.S. Route 460 in Giles County

NARROWS, Va. Weather permitting, the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin repairs to a 180-foot section of collapsed retaining wall on U.S. Route 460 in Giles County Friday. The repairs are expected to take seven to 10 days
The retaining wall is located along westbound Route 460 in the area known as The Bluffs between Narrows and Rich Creek, about four miles south of the West Virginia state line.
Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including on weekends, to make the repairs, according to VDOT spokesman Jason Bond. During these work hours, Route 460 traffic between Route 61 and Route 643 (Stateline Road) will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and flaggers and pilot trucks will be used to route two-way traffic into the eastbound lanes of Route 460.
During nighttime hours from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m., when repair work is not being performed, both eastbound lanes will be open to traffic and the left westbound lane will remain closed.
Since the wall collapsed on July 13, Route 460 traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction. The left eastbound and left westbound lanes of Route 460 are currently closed.
The repair work will involve stabilizing the rock slope behind the collapsed wall and replacing the walls fallen or cracked concrete.
