Child hurt in bicycle crash with retaining wall - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Emergency crews responded to Harbor Drive and Y Drive along the waterfront at about 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses said the 4-year-old Muskegon boy came down the hill by the YMCA, went across the street, went down the hill some more, fell off his bike and hit his head on a retaining wall.

Police said the child was unable to stop.

Seventeen-year-old Ben Schultz of Wyoming said the child was halfway over the wall, about to fall into the water, when he grabbed the boy's legs and brought him back to safety.

Schultz said the boy's father ran up and carried the child back across Harbor Drive, where he was met by paramedics and police.

The child suffered a head injury and was transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.

No further information was available on the child's condition.

VDOT begins repairs to retaining wall on U.S. Route 460 in Giles County - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

July 18, 2014 VDOT begins repairs to retaining wall on U.S. Route 460 in Giles County

Anonymous Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Daily Telegraph Fri Jul 18, 2014, 09:55 AM EDT

NARROWS, Va. Weather permitting, the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin repairs to a 180-foot section of collapsed retaining wall on U.S. Route 460 in Giles County Friday. The repairs are expected to take seven to 10 days

The retaining wall is located along westbound Route 460 in the area known as The Bluffs between Narrows and Rich Creek, about four miles south of the West Virginia state line.

Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including on weekends, to make the repairs, according to VDOT spokesman Jason Bond. During these work hours, Route 460 traffic between Route 61 and Route 643 (Stateline Road) will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and flaggers and pilot trucks will be used to route two-way traffic into the eastbound lanes of Route 460.

During nighttime hours from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m., when repair work is not being performed, both eastbound lanes will be open to traffic and the left westbound lane will remain closed.

Since the wall collapsed on July 13, Route 460 traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction. The left eastbound and left westbound lanes of Route 460 are currently closed.

The repair work will involve stabilizing the rock slope behind the collapsed wall and replacing the walls fallen or cracked concrete.

Massive $2.1 million wall under construction at Campbell River dump - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A crew from Jacob Brothers Construction works atop a retaining wall being built along Argonaut Road to expand the dump. The wall will allow the dump to accept waste for three more years while a new dump in Cumberland is being built.

An imposing wall under construction at the Campbell River landfill will extend the life of the dump, according to the Comox Strathcona Waste Management Service.

The wall extends the dump outward towards Argonaut Road in order to keep it going for three more years, until a new dump in Cumberland is built.

Tom Boatman, the manager of the solid waste service which serves both the Strathcona and Comox Valley regional districts, said the wall in Campbell River is vital because the existing Comox Valley landfill is expected to run out of space before the new one opens in Cumberland as the regions only landfill.

This wall is buying us the time, Boatman said. We need this to ensure that when we run out of space in Cumberland, we have landfill space here. This wall is very important so we can continue to provide the space we need to dispose of waste.

The $2.1 million wall is expected to be complete in the next six to eight weeks and once complete will be 13 metres high. The wall will then be covered and the side of the wall that faces Argonaut Road will be planted with native plants to make it eye-catching. There will also be greenery planted along the top of the wall.

While the wall is intended to extend the life of the landfill, at the same time, the waste management service is also planning to close the Campbell River dump.

The entire shutdown is expected to cost $10 million and will be completed by 2018. It will involve covering the entire dump with polyethylene to seal off the landfill.

For the $10 million were complying with the ministry (of Environment) standards for operating, Boatman said. Its something we have to do.
