McDonalds next to Greystones schools opposed - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Greystones residents are set for another clash with fast food outlet McDonalds over the location of a proposed drive-through for the town.

Last year a planning application from McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland for a 368sq m restaurant and drive-through with a 59sq m enclosed yard in Blacklion, to be located beside three local schools, was approved by Wicklow County Council.

The development was turned down by An Bord Pleanla, which cited design issues and the proper planning and development of Blacklion.

Now McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland has come back with a revised proposal incorporating a cafe, fitness studio and an expanded drive-through restaurant that, taken together, amount to some three times the size of the rejected proposal.

The development, located beside the Blacklion shopping centre, is served by a road running from a junction on the Greystones to Bray Road.

Also opening from this road and located opposite the proposed McDonalds are three schools. Two of these, a Gaelscoil and an Educate Together school, are primary schools, while the third, a second-level school, is currently under construction.

Competing views on the suitability of the site for a McDonalds given the proximity of the schools have been expressed on Facebook, with some suggesting there could be as many as 80 jobs involved in the development.

However, a number of politicians and parents of children attending the schools are opposed to the development. Local councillor Tom Fortune said nobody would argue against the jobs element but the location of the schools and McDonalds should not be together.

Attempts to contact McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland were not successful.

Coal Centers High Point restaurant for sale as owners ease into retirement - November 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bob Sepesy gazed out the windows of his High Point Restaurant and Lounge, overlooking the Monongahela River, the Washington County borough of Newell and California University of Pennsylvania.

If Norman Rockwell lived here, this is what he would have painted, he said.

The Coal Center restaurant's dining room, bar and deck all look out over what many visitors call a million dollar view.

Now that view, and eight acres of property, including the business, is for sale.

Sepesy, 69, and his wife, Loretta, 67, who reside in California, are easing into retirement.

A few months ago the couple listed the property for $1.5 million.

We aren't closing. I enjoy it. I love this place. I'm sad. I'm happy to move on with my life. I still have the passion. I don't have the energy, he said, laughing.

Sepesy defies his own proclamation, taking visitors on a tour and greeting arriving employees and guests. In his spare time, he pilots his own plane and shoots aerial photography.

He and his brother, Joe, operated Sepesy's Tavern in California from 1967 until 1984, taking over a business their father owned since 1948.

I always had my eye on High Point, he said.

MERIDEN Though the rebuilding process at Violis Restaurant has been slow while the city and insurance company negotiate a settlement, city officials are hopeful the restaurant will be open by the start of the next golf season.

Business has been limping along after a June 3 arson fire ripped through the outside of the restaurant and into the attic. Violis has been selling hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches in a snack stand.

The restaurant is in a city-owned clubhouse at the Hunter Golf Club on Westfield Road. A survey by a structural engineer revealed that there was very little evidence of fire damage ... within the interior of the building, but rather extensive damage to the wood roof-support beams.

City Fire Marshal Steve Trella ruled that the blaze was intentionally set.

City Manager Lawrence J. Kendzior said about three-quarters of the support beams are damaged and need to be replaced, along with a portion of the roof. The heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units, as well as some of the electrical units, also need replacing.

The city manager estimated it will cost more than $1 million to repair the building. He said that the citys insurance company is estimating closer to $850,000.

Tupelo Honey Cafe to hire 130 employees - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Whether you're looking for a new place to eat or a new job, a brand new restaurant moving in to Market Common just might have what you're searching for.

Tupelo Honey Caf is setting up shop in the former location of Tommy Bahamas. It's bringing in over 100 jobs, and its southern-style of food to those visiting Market Common.

Tupelo Honey Cafe is based out of Asheville, North Carolina, and this will be the chain's first location near a beach.

Elizabeth Sims, vice president of marketing communications for the caf, says construction is running smoothly and the plan is to be open for business at the end of February.

Restaurant leaders say they like to incorporate the local vibe into each restaurant, so for Myrtle Beach, they'll be adding more seafood to the menus. They also want to add some lighter fares, because people here in Market Common want to shop, walk, snack, and then maybe grab dinner. You'll also see local art hanging on their walls.

They're going to hire 130 people. They need this large staff because they have a high-volume restaurant with 250 seats, and they'll serve food seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Sims says the draw to come to Market Common was because there was a good mix of business and residential, and they looked to other businesses that have recently opened and are seeing success.

"Many of our guests that come through the door, they're here for lunch, says Charming Charlie store manager Kate Holmes. We see them shopping and then we see them frequent for dinner. So it's definitely a community setting where they can go and spend the day."

Charming Charlie opened in July and is now seeing more local repeat customers. BarreWorx opened their doors just one month ago. They offer fitness classes, and say they're seeing the same type of strong local support.

Job applications are being accepted right now for Tupelo Honey Caf, and there will be face-to-face interviews in January. You can apply online here: https://tupelohoneycafe.com/careers

Hard Rock Hotel construction to begin in Daytona Beach - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -

In just weeks, crews will begin working on the new Hard Rock Hotel and Cafe.

The $100 million project will be located just one mile south of the Daytona Beach Pier. It'll be equipped with 107 condos, a 250-seat restaurant, 360-space parking garage and four pools.

"The ambiance that they create is their brand and image is different than anything we have right now," said Tom Caradonio, Executive Director of the Daytona Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

One thing Caradonio said about the Hard Rock Hotel & Cafe that makes it stand out is how it'll help with the economy year round.

"If you have something that also has condos then that keeps the synergy of the property going, because there's people there all the time," he said.

The Waypoint Real Estate Consulting firm, which is marketing the project, said work will start within the next 60 days.

"There's some work we have to do to the sea wall and we have to do site prep. There's substantial work that has to be done on site prior to the vertical construction," said Myles Newell, Principal of Waypoint Real Estate Consulting.

Newell said vertical construction will most likely start by next year and Caradonio said folks won't be disappointed once it's built.

"People are finally saying we need to travel, we got to have fun and what better place to do that than a beautiful beach and the 'World's Most Famous Beach' on top of that. We're spending all this for you, so come and see it, come and enjoy it," said Caradonio.

Construction on Frederick Road between Catonsville and Ellicott City - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Motorists can expect to see temporary lane closures on a 2-mile section of Frederick Road from Catonsville to Ellicott City due to repairs and resurfacing that will last until late fall, according to a Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) Monday, Nov. 17 press release.

Construction of the $1 million project is between North Rolling Road in Catonsville and River Road in Ellicott City, SHA said in the release. That includes milling or removing the top layer of pavement, patching and resurfacing pavement, SHA said.

Approximately 15,000 vehicles travel between those two points each day, according to Charlie Gischlar, a spokesman for SHA.

The road was last resurfaced in 1993, Gischlar said. It has been patched since then and is now due for resurfacing, he said.

Crews will be working between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. They will also work between 6 a.m. and noon Saturdays, as needed, SHA said in the release.

The contractors will use flaggers, barrels, cones and signs to direct two-way traffic through the one-lane work area, SHA said.

Drivers are urged to drive safely in the work zone to prevent crashes by staying alert and keeping an eye out for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers, SHA said.

Those with questions may contact SHA's District 4 Office Maintenance Division in Hunt Valley at 410-229-2360, toll free at 1-866-998-0367 or through email at shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.

New Freddy's restaurant under construction - November 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Crews have been working at the future site of Freddys Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.

The Wichita, Kan.,-based company announced earlier this year that it would be building a new restaurant in St. Joseph at 210 N. Belt Highway, just south of Taco Bell.

We are excited to have commenced construction, said Lexie Pearce, public relations coordinator.

Ms. Pearce said construction schedules are always subject to unforeseen delays, but Freddys is currently scheduled to open sometime between late February and mid March.

Besides the obvious custard and steakburgers Freddys has compiled a menu of different beef hot dog variations, patty melts and veggie burgers.

The franchise is proud to be family-oriented. Founders Bill and Randy Simon wanted to create a steakburger reminiscent of the ones they enjoyed with their father, Freddy, in the 1950s. The two men teamed up with a successful restaurateur, Scott Redler, to create Freddys.

Mr. Simon, a World War II veteran, was not only the inspiration behind the menu, but inspires the schoolchildren he visits by telling stories of his military career.
