Understanding adverse blood vessel remodeling following stenting - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of heart attacks and stroke. The narrowing of blood vessels that is caused by atherosclerosis can be treated with angioplasty or stenting to improve blood flow. However, the stenting process induces deleterious remodeling of the blood vessel that can increase thrombosis risk, limiting the use of this strategy. In an article published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, a research team led by Ziad Ali of the Columbia University Medical Center now provides new insights into the pathological remodeling that occurs following blood vessel stenting. In patients, they show that a gene network regulated by the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX1) was downregulated in atherosclerotic plaques and a gene variant in the receptor tyrosine kinase ROS1 was associated with adverse effects of stenting. In a mouse model, loss of the antioxidant GPX1 promoted both oxidative and reductive stress, which in turn led to elevated ROS1 activity. Their study suggests ROS1 merits further exploration as a therapeutic target to improve the treatment of flow-limiting atherosclerosis.

Benefits to setting time limits in remodeling contracts - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

If you're doing a home remodeling project, it's smart to include time limits and your options if the contractor fails to meet them.

Contractors want to get started and finished as soon as possible so they get paid, but sometimes delays occur and they can be long and frustrating. Having a defined start date and an estimated time to complete the entire job can make it easier for you to cancel.

"The whole island will be demolished out," Victor Matos said.

Matos is doing a full kitchen remodel. He gave a company called Da Vinci Green a $4,000 deposit on a $24,000 contract and expected work to begin right away. There was no estimated time to complete in the contract.

"He said he could not put an estimate date on there right now, because he needed his designer to come out to the house, the next day," Matos said.

The design was finished, but the estimated completion date was never added to the contract. There was also no official start-by date.

"It's not something anybody ever thinks about because you think the guy wants to finish the job as soon as possible so he can get paid as soon as possible," Matos said.

Matos said problems finalizing the design and ordering cabinets lead to a nearly two-month delay in starting. Matos said he wanted to cancel, but the contractual right to do that had expired.

If he canceled now, he would owe 20percentof the total contract price. He would lose his $4,000 deposit and owe another $900. That is when Matos said he realized how important a formal start-by date can be.

Nonprofit remodeling home in River Bend neighborhood - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Josh Hafner, jhafner@dmreg.com 11:09 p.m. CST November 11, 2014

David Houston, director of a young nonprofit called Homes 4 My Peeps, promotes sustainable housing in neighborhoods as a way of reducing crime, conserving resources and attracting new development. The nonprofit acquired a home at 1609 Eighth St. in Des Moines that Houston plans to make into a model home for the organization. It will feature solar energy and energy- efficient heating. It wasn't Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house that drew David Houston to architecture, or even the sight of 801 Grand towering above Des Moines. Rather, he recalls finding inspiration growing up in his family's home, a tiny house cramped with four siblings in north-central Des Moines. At the age of 10, Houston didn't dream about growing up designing some grandiose tower. He just wanted to draw up a better home for his family.

He grew up, left Des Moines and earned a degree in architecture. When Houston returned 15 years later, he visited his old neighborhood of River Bend and didn't like what he saw: The boarded-up houses still had boards, he said. The vacant houses were still vacant.

Houston's response: Homes 4 My Peeps, a developing nonprofit he formed in 2012. The organization hopes to transform blighted areas of Des Moines through sustainable home solutions from solar panels to simple recycling that he believes can reduce waste, improve property values and better communities.

The Register spoke with Houston about his nonprofit, which has acquired a house in River Bend he intends to outfit as a green model home for the community. A Fun Run to raise money to the project takes place on Saturday.

    Q. In a nutshell, what's Homes 4 My Peeps all about?

It's to provide green housing solutions to blighted communities, promoting sustainability, efficiency and healthy living.

This first home would be used as an incubator and model home. We'd like to promote sustainability through do-it-yourself programs ranging from composting, gardening, hydroponic systems, bee keeping, even permaculture and rainwater harvesting.

    Q. Some might wonder whether a busy family in a working class neighborhood would have the time or energy themselves to take up composting or permaculture. What convinces you otherwise?
