Rancho Family YMCA remodeling, expanding - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Emily Sorensen

Members of the Rancho Family YMCA might have noticed a little drywall dust around recently.

The YMCA has been undergoing numerous changes and remodeling, adding new exercise equipment, redoing the pool and expanding the Child Lodge.

    Mark Thompson

The remodel is to enhance the health and wellness experience for our members, said Mark Thompson, who joined the Rancho Family YMCA as executive director in July, after 20 years of working with various YMCAs, including being the executive manager of Camp Surf for 15 years.

People are asking for high-tech, cutting-edge equipment and classes, said Thompson. Our focus is to serve more people and enhance the wellness of the community, as well as making the YMCA more of a family affair. Your community is stronger and better when you have people who are well.

The Wellness Center has been completely redone, with new, state-of-the-art cardio equipment from Precor with high-definition televisions, and Internet access for members beginning in January. It creates an Internet profile that looks at the users whole health and wellness, said Thompson.

The Aquatics Center, which is currently closed and will reopen Monday, Jan. 14, is also getting a facelift, with the pool being resurfaced and LED lighting being installed for a more contemporary look. General maintenance is also being performed on the Aquatics Center.

Rancho Family YMCAs Program Center is also getting a major overhaul, with a new indoor studio space being added, which will allow the YMCA to offer more cutting-edge classes, including indoor cycling with brand-new Kaiser bikes, Zumba, yoga and more. The Program Centers remodel will continue past January.

Finally, the Child Lodge, which provides childcare for up to two hours for parents who want to work out, is being expanded, something that Thompson hoped would be finished by the end of January.

Remodeling Begins On Cassia Judicial Center - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV) Work crews started cleaning up some asbestos in the old Swensens Market in Burley today. That's in preparation for the old grocery store to be remodeled into a judicial center.

There's been plenty of talk and preparation, and now work has finally begun on the Cassia County Judicial Center. Starr Corporation won the low bid of just over $1.8 million for the project. But before they can get started, work crews need to get the lead and asbestos out of the building.

Cassia County Administrator Kerry McMurray says, "There was a small amount of some lead-based paint, some tile and mastic, which is the glue that holds the tile down, that has some asbestos in it, that needs to be removed."

McMurray says the removal should only take a couple of days. He says Cassia County is hammering out the very last details of the contract with Starr Corporation, which he says are related to insurance and bonding for the project.

McMurray says, "It's a 210 day construction period, so from the time that we give Starr Corporation the notice to proceed, which we'll be pretty close to the same day the agreement is signed, 210 days to complete the project."

That translates to about seven months. So if all goes well, the renovation could be finished sometime in August. In the meantime, McMurray says it shouldn't take long at all to work out the contract details before the Cassia County Commissioners meet again next Monday, January 7th.

McMurray says the planning process has gone very smoothly, and Cassia County is excited to see the remodeling officially begin.

Fine by Design's Intelligent Design: Save Money on a San Francisco Home Remodeling Project - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fine by Design, a San Francisco bay area contractor, has recently started an intelligent design program for home remodeling. For San Francisco homeowners looking to limit costs but not quality for their next residential remodeling project, this new approach offers the right solution.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) January 03, 2013

My clients have been saying it for years, that my approach to home remodeling is a more thoughtful and conscious method that has saved them time and money, said Paul OKane, the owner of Fine by Design, a home remodeling company in the San Francisco bay area. So I recently started this Intelligent Design concept, which reflects the companys belief in doing things with precision, maximizing the use of our team and staying true to the homeowners vision.

Indeed part of this intelligent design approach, OKane said, started years ago with Fine by Designs decision to manufacture its own cabinet brand, Made in Marin, which allows the company to pass on savings to homeowners.

Our Made in Marin cabinets are manufactured, as the name implies, in Marin County and made with exceptional quality and built to last, OKane said. Since our manufacturing facility is local, the turnaround time is extremely quick and custom-design elements can be made without any delays or extra cost hikes

Yet Fine by Designs intelligent design approach goes much further. It includes all phases of design-build process:

Paul OKane also pointed out that smart home design means being well organized and maintaining effective communication with a client from start to finish. Fine by Design does this by offering homeowners a turn-key solution: All contracted services for a remodeling job are handled by the company, from kitchens and baths to room additions and whole-house remodels; Fine by Design even provides landscaping services.

Whatever the project, you get one clear remodeling plan and this information is communicated through and by one person, me, OKane said. If unexpected things arise or clarity is needed, I will communicate with you right away. An essential part of our intelligent design practice is streamlining how a remodeling job is organized, catching potential mistakes before they happen to lower costs and speed up production time.

Our goals are really pretty simple, he added, Make a remodeled home look distinctive. Make it functional. And once the project is done to make sure everyone loves it.

Interestingly, OKane pointed out that Intelligent Design can often be about waiting for the right time to remodel. The motivation a homeowner needs to begin a remodeling project can develop slowly, so it can start with me providing inspiration by creating a unique design drawing or sharing ideas about how a new kitchen will look and function.

Jax Fish House in Denver closes Jan. 1 for two-week remodeling - January 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jax Fish House in Denver closes New Years Day for a two-week remodel. But staffers such as star bartender Tim Harris, in photo, return. (File photo)

Jax Fish House in Denver is taking New Years Eve to heart, ringing out the old and ringing in the new with a two-week remodeling that will close the restaurant starting Jan. 1. Of course, theyll still do their annual Dec. 31 blowout, complete with bubbly and noisemakers.

This is just a matter of continuing to evolve, says owner Dave Query, who opened Jaxs LoDo room in November 1996, refurbishing the old Terminal Bar memorialized in a Tom Waits song. The bar will expand and it will have a new look and menu, but with the same staff, which is a team crucial to our success, says Query, who has been an area restarateur for more than 20 years.

Jax, which opened its first restaurant in Boulder, is arguably responsible for bringing super-fresh seafood to Denver at least in a way that stuck. More than a few Colorado residents had their first bites of Kumamoto and Fanny Bay oysters at the raw bar, thanks to Jax and air couriers. Query, who heads the Big Red F Restaurant Group, promises a re-tooled, streamlined and updated Jax that will be bigger, badder and fresher than anything you could ever imagine.

OK, there might be some caffeine-driven hyperbole in there, but Query details an expanded raw bar, three times as many tap beers, an expanded housemade-soda program, and more fresh-off-the-jet seafood.

Jax has won numerous awards for its food and beverage programs, including a 2012 citation from Travel & Leisure magazine.

And yes, bartender Tim Harris will still be working his magic behind the pine. The man is still Brooks Robinson with a martini shaker.

A firm re-opening date hasnt been set, Query says, but theyre shooting for mid-January.

Remodeling Contractor Hammer & Hand Revives 1914 Home After Decades of Tweaks - January 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home remodeling project brings open interior design to historic Portland home through collaboration of Emerick Architects and Portland and Seattle remodeler Hammer & Hand.

Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) December 31, 2012

It was awesome to work with Emerick Architects again, said Hammer & Hand Director of Operations Aaron Stevens. Their development process aligns nicely with ours, with its focus on providing an early sense of design and pricing and really listening to what the clients and their family were asking for.

The home had already undergone decades of tweaks and modifications, pushing the structures utility to the limits. When the clients wanted to do a home remodeling project, small adjustments were no longer an option. So the builder-architect-client team began a complete reset of the home.

When the clients came to us, I was really impressed with how they had squeezed every last ounce of utility out of the structure, said Aaron. You dont get much more green than that! It was either tear it down, or dive in and renew it. So an intensive, whole house remodel really felt right to everyone.

The design and aesthetic of the home remodeling project was guided both by the clients desire to stay true to the original character of their family home and opportunity to take advantage of a more modern, open interior architecture.

The remodeling team added windows and doors to open up the kitchen space, allow natural light to fill the room, and connect it to the back deck and vibrant garden beyond.

Emerick Architects employed bright materials throughout the design of the home remodeling project to bring more light into the house. Hammer & Hand used Oregon-sourced reclaimed historic white oak throughout the remodel to lighten darker areas of the home.

The clients were amazed when they moved back into the remodeled home, said Aaron. They said the space not only looked beautiful, it also felt massive.
