MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named Harrell Remodeling in Mountain View, CA Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) in two categories Residential Exterior Specialty and Residential Bath in its annual remodeling awards competition.
"Considering the caliber of the other winners in this year's competition, we're honored to have had two regional award winning projects," states Ciro Giammona, President of Harrell Remodeling. "These are design awards, but our employee owners realize that it is a team effort to envision, document and construct projects at this high level and we are extremely proud to have received these awards."
Contractors from seven regions around the country vie for CotY Awards on an annual basis. National winners will be announced and honored at NARI's Evening of ExcellenceSM reception on Friday, April 12, 2013.
All projects submitted for judging were an improvement or an addition to an existing structure, with the exception of one category, "Residential Exterior Specialty." Otherwise, new construction projects were not eligible.
Competing projects were completed between July 1, 2011, and November 30, 2012, and were not submitted in previous NARI National contests. An impartial panel of judges, experts within the remodeling industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrant's binders, which include "before and after" photography and project descriptions. Judging focused on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.
To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. The entries of this year's competition totaled over $71 million worth of remodeling projects. NARI members represent an elite group of the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers.

Zillow Digs allows users to select the type of room they want to redo, the styles they want and how much they want to spend.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
But now homeowners can compare costs of similar remodeling jobs based on the size and type of the room, where they live and the materials they want to use with a new tool from real estate web site Zillow.
Called Zillow Digs, the free web service and app allows users to select the rooms they want to redo, the styles they want -- such as modern, Mediterranean, art deco -- and how much they want to spend. The site then returns a series of photos of real renovations that fit those criteria with estimates that are based on an algorithm that takes into account rates from local contractors, as well as material costs and regional labor rates.
Related: Million-dollar foreclosures
The results include both an average cost estimate and an estimate range, which can vary quite dramatically. Users can input their location to better tailor estimates based on local labor and material prices. A homeowner living in Manhattan, for example, will get a much higher estimate for a kitchen renovation than someone living in Peoria, Ill.
Costs are broken down by materials and labor and further subdivided by each aspect of the job. For a bath renovation, for example, the estimate will include the price of a new bathtub and how much it costs to install it.
And when homeowners find something they like on Zillow Digs, they can use the site to connect with contractors, architects and designers.

Last year, $125 million was spent on home renovation projects, according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. And, as the housing market continues to improve, spending is expected to rise by nearly 20% this year.

For many homeowners, remodeling a kitchen or bathroom can lead to many sleepless nights. Not only do worries abound about picking the right tiles or cabinets, but there are few resources to let you know if you're paying the right amount

"Through the first three quarters of 2012, investment in the residential sector was responsible for one out of every six dollars added to our GDP," said Eric Belsky, the center's director. "Moving forward, home improvement spending is expected to make an even larger contribution."
Homeowners are also getting more bang for their remodeling buck. For every dollar spent on an overhaul of a midrange kitchen, a home's value rises by about 69 cents, according to Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report 2013. That's up from about 65 cents on the dollar in 2011-2012.

Free app for iPad and Web features thousands of photos of home improvement projects, as well as localized estimates for project costs.
Zillow Digs, the real estate aggregator's new app for home improvement information.
Online real estate listing aggregator Zillow launched an app today that aims to help home shoppers and home buyers with their home improvement projects.
Available for the iPad and the Web, Zillow Digs is a free app designed to offer inspiration as well as information about remodeling projects. The free app lets users browse thousands of photos of bathroom, kitchen, and outdoor projects, as well as get estimates on the cost of the actual project based on the user's location.
Similar to Houzz, an online home improvement community that launched a design, decorating, and remodeling app in 2010, Digs allows users to create, save, and share Pinterest-like boards containing their ideas and interact with other users who may have similar ideas. The app also offers connections to local industry professionals, such as architects, contractors, and designers.
"Tens of millions of home buyers shop for homes on Zillow each month, and home improvement is a natural next step for us in consumer empowerment and transparency of information to help people make smarter decisions," Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff said in a statement. This first-of-its-kind remodeling cost estimate algorithm was created by Zillow's industry-leading team of economists and data analysts who produce extensive housing data and research."
Founded in 2004 and launched as a Web site in 2006, Zillow has a sales and rental database on more than 110 million U.S. homes. The company's revenue comes from real estate professionals' subscription fees and advertising.
In 2008, the company launched Mortgage Marketplace, which lets prospective borrowers get quotes anonymously and lenders get leads for free.
