Scores of trees were brought down and some of the areas busiest road and rail routes were blocked during the evening rush hour as high winds caused chaos across Shropshire and Mid Wales.
Towns and villages suffered power cuts and roof tiles were blown from buildings as the area took a battering from gales.
A driver was taken to hospital after his lorry was hit by a tree at Atcham. The roof at an outbuilding at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was blown off, causing disruption to traffic trying to leave the site on Mytton Oak Road.
Damage was also caused to the roof at Oswestry Leisure Centre, which was closed while damage was assessed. In Tilstock, near Whitchurch, a tree fell into a nearby graveyard.
Earlier, The Met Office issued a Red Alert alert for coastal areas, which were being battered by 100mph winds.
At Ternhill, the A41 was closed between the A53 an Bletchley Road after a lorry overturned.
In Church Stretton, a tree came down on Sandford Avenue, just off the main A49, this evening partially blocking the road.
At Whitchurch, a tree came down on Sedgeford near John Talbot School.

Narendra Modi today accused Congress of following a divide and rule policy for the last 60 years and recalled the setting up of a Commission on Religious and Linguistic Minorities by its government as an instrument to "sow the seeds of poison".
Wooing the Dalits and backward classes at a public meeting here, Modi also alleged there has been a "conspiracy" to snatch the rights given to the community by B R Ambedkar against the backdrop of suggestion by Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi for ending caste-based reservation.
The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate called himself "victim of untouchability", saying Cochin city mayor Tony Chammany did not attend the meeting though his name was among those listed on the invitation card.
"I continue to be a victim of untouchability," he said.
Alleging that Congress had sought to make gains by dividing the society by sowing 'poisonous seeds", he said the dalits, adivasis and backward classes would have a decisive say if his party was voted to power. There would be a "change of government" at the Centre within 100 days after which this would be brought to an end, he added.
Modi promised that once he comes to power at the Centre, he would like to do something for his "family", pointing towards the crowd at the meeting. "The forthcoming decade will belong to the members of the marginalised community."
"For the past 60 years, people have indulged in vote bank politics to divide and rule. This has led to our division and fragmentation. They are experts in zeher ki kheti. The Ranganath Mishra Commission was set up to sow the seeds of poison," he told the meeting organised by the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS), an outfit of a prominent Scheduled Caste community.
The Ranganath Misra Commission was constituted by the UPA government on October 29. 2004 to look into various issues related to Linguistic and Religious minorities.
In its report submitted to the Government on May 21, 2007, the Commission among other things recommended 10 per cent of jobs for Muslims and five per cent for other minorities in government services and seats in educational institutions for minorities.
On a visit to Karnataka last week, UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had launched an attack on the opposition BJP accusing it of indulging in 'zeher ki kheti' (sowing seeds of poison) to attain power.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Across California, state agencies and departments are taking immediate actions to curb water use at their facilities in response to the drought state of emergency declared by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.
The Governor's state of emergency declaration charged the Department of General Services (DGS) with "immediately implement(ing) water use reduction plans for all state facilities." "Throughout state government, we are answering Governor Brown's call to save water wherever we can," said DGS Director Fred Klass. "DGS is leading water conservation efforts at our state-owned buildings."
Some immediate steps DGS has taken over the past few weeks include:
Drastically reduced or eliminated altogether water used in landscaping at DGS properties.
Shutting off water fountains and water features on state property, including the State Capitol grounds.
Instituting a moratorium on non-essential landscaping projects at state facilities.
Cancelling contracts for water intensive-window washing at state facilities.
Eliminating all car washes in the state garage other than those required for safety.
Issuing guidance through the Division of the State Architect to nearly 1,200 school administrators on best practices for conserving water at K-12 schools and community college campuses.

State shutting down fountains and sprinklers to save water
Rob Hopkins believes in being proactive. The Big Bear City Community Services District general manager asked his board of directors to approve the implementation of Stage 1 water restrictions because of the states drought emergency status.
Even though we are above our threshold right now, I see potential problems if things dont improve, Hopkins said. It takes time to get the word out to the public, time to ramp things up. In March and April people are going to start coming up here and working on their houses, using more water.
The board voted to approve implementing Stage 1 restrictions, which become effective immediately.
CSDs Stage 1 water restrictions include a moratorium on landscape watering between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Those working on construction projects are asked to stop using potable water for dust control. Its mostly voluntary, Hopkins said. Stage 1 is kind of an awareness, a way to educate the public.
Hopkins told the board during the Feb. 3 meeting that the agency can implement the ordinance without a public hearing under certain circumstances.
California Governor Jerry Browns recent declaration of a statewide drought emergency is an emergency situation, Hopkins said. Hopkins and CSD water superintendent Jerry Griffith compared current water table data with information calculated during the last drought situation. The pattern is the same as the last drought, Hopkins said. So we want to get ahead of the curve, begin the process of public notification instead of waiting.
Board members discussed the ordinance in detail and asked Hopkins if the rate study will include drought situations. Hopkins said drought tiers are being looked at. Board member John Green said he doesnt want rates on the lowest tier to be affected. Id hate to see people on fixed incomes be hurt by this, Green said.
Board member Jeff Newsome, who was out of town but took part in the meeting via teleconference, advocates a five-tier rate structure that rewards people whose water use is lower than the bottom tier, he said.
Board member Larry Walsh wants to review the ordinance because of language he considers contradictory and unclear in a couple of areas. He also doesnt see how the CSD can enforce water restrictions. Are we going to turn all our water workers into water cops? Walsh asked. How are we going to get people to comply?
Board president Karyn Oxandaboure said that neighbors are usually the best water police during drought situations. Green said he believes the majority of CSD customers will follow the program.
