Ice-cream disaster, reluctant hooker and wrong takeaway the 999 timewasters - June 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bizarre and needless calls to the emergency services that have police, ambulance and fire crews tearing their hair out in fury and frustration

We've all been there. The ice-cream van pulls up on your street, you dash out, hand over your cash and he gives you an ice-cream. But then you discover he has been a bit stingy with the sprinkles.

Disappointing yes, not the end of the world. But it was obviously to much for one woman as she dialled 999 to complain her cornet was only half-dipped in sprinkles and the seller refused her a refund.

West Midlands Police released a recording of the angry woman's call to urge people only to dial 999 in case of real emergencies.

But she isn't the first caller to get an icy response from the emergency services for wasting their time. Here are some other gems:

Last year police released a recording of a furious caller who rang to complain about a hooker's offers after meeting her outside a hotel.

The man wanted to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act.

    Why oh dry?

A woman rang West Midlands Ambulance Service to see if a crew could pop round to take her laundry off the line.

New Energy Hope: Turning Used Plastic into Oil - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

From The Kiplinger Letter, May 23, 2014

Another promising source of energy: Recycled plastic.

Among producers making a play on oil from plastic

Count on states to become more creative in trying to attract movie projects. With 39 states offering tax breaks and other incentives, competition is stiff. But the payoff can be huge for states chosen as locations for film and TV projects. The biggest winner: Production companies. Most states are trying to take business from the biggies: California, New York and Florida. And those states are sweetening the pot to prevent defections. California, for instance, has added new tax credits for feature films.

Among the states auditioning for a leading role: Nevada, which offers breaks in return for filming at least 60% of a project and spending $500,000 on services such as transportation, housing, studio rental there. Alabama is serving up generous incentives to projects that hire state residents during production. Georgia, which sweetens its deal by cutting taxes even more if productions embed an animated state logo in the film. And Alaska, with its tax breaks for TV commercials and video projects produced there.

Good odds of the MERS virus ebbing this summer. The respiratory bug, which first appeared in Saudi Arabia, has spread to 17 other countries, including the U.S. So far...632 cases worldwide and an alarming 30% mortality rate.

But it will return early next year. The virus is thought to have originated in camels. Its uptick this year was tied to the animals spring birthing season. If thats the case, MERS may be tough to eradicate. Camels are vital in the Mideast.

Meanwhile, no travel curbs to the Middle East. Human-to-human infection requires close contact, so frequent hand washing goes a long way to limit its spread.

A vaccine for humans is years away. One for camels will be finished first. Theres a lower safety threshold for animal drugs, allowing for speedier development.

No chance of a tax holiday for repatriated corporate profits anytime soon. GOP lawmakers will squawk even louder about needing it, however, in light of the potential loss of Pfizer, with net income of $22 billion in 2013, to Britain. Even if the NYC-based drug maker fails to win rival AstraZenecas hand, its plan to move to the brides lower-tax U.K. neighborhood will spur fears about corporations opting to emigrate. Pfizer, for example, makes no secret of its aim to escape U.S. taxes.

Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs suit battery-operated equipment. - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

May 29, 2014 - Supplied in subminiatureSOT-23 surface mount package, Nanopower Anisotropic Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs feature solid state, non-contact design and are suitable for battery powered applications where previously only reed switches could be used. Model SM351LT provides magnetic sensitivity as low as 7 Gauss with current draw of 360 nA, while Model SM353LT offers sensitivity down to 14 Gauss with current draw of 310 nA. Omnipolarity allows sensors to be activated by north or south pole. Honeywell International 14503-T Bammel North Houston Rd., Suite 300 Houston, TX, 77014 USA Press release date: May 19, 2014

High sensitivity allows design engineers to reduce system costs Nanopower allows for use in battery operated equipment with extremely low power requirements Solid state, non-contact design provides a reliable, durable alternative to reed switches

MINNEAPOLIS Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today introduced the industrys first Nanopower Anisotropic Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs that provide the highest level of magnetic sensitivity (as low as 7 Gauss typical) while requiring nanopower (360 nA). When compared to other widely used magnetic technologies, these sensors offer design engineers a number of advantages.

Smaller and more durable and reliable than reed switches, at the same sensitivity and essentially the same cost, the new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are ideal for battery powered applications where previously only reed switches could be used due to very low power requirements and large air gap needs.

Compared with Hall-effect sensors, the new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs higher sensitivity can allow the ability to sense air gaps two times the distance of Hall-effect sensors. The higher sensitivity improves design flexibility and can offer significant application cost savings by utilizing smaller or lower strength magnets.

The Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are designed for use in a wide range of battery-operated applications including water and gas meters, electricity meters, industrial smoke detectors, exercise equipment, security systems, handheld computers, scanners, as well as white goods such as dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, refrigerators and coffee machines, and medical equipment such as hospital beds, medication dispensing cabinets, infusion pumps, and consumer electronics such as notebook computers, tablets, and cordless speakers.

Due to the significant price increases for rare earth magnets, design engineers using Hall-effect sensors have been looking for ways to decrease the total cost of design by using less magnetic material, or moving to a more common magnet in their applications, said Josh Edberg, senior product marketing manager for Honeywell Sensing and Control. Design engineers are also looking for an alternative to reed switches to reduce size and increase quality and durability, while maximizing battery life. Honeywells new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are ideal for these battery powered applications due to their high sensitivity and nanopower.

The Nanopower Series is available in two magnetic sensitivities: -- Ultra-high sensitivity SM351LT: 7 Gauss typical operate, 11 Gauss maximum operate, very low current draw (360 nA typical) -- Very high sensitivity SM353LT: 14 Gauss typical operate, 20 Gauss maximum operate, very low current draw (310 nA typical)

Omnipolarity allows the sensor to be activated by either a north or south pole, eliminating the need for the magnet polarity to be identified, simplifying installation and potentially reducing system cost. The push-pull (CMOS) output does not require external resistors, making it easier and more cost-effective to operate. The non-chopper stabilized design eliminates electrical noise generated by the sensor. The subminiature SOT-23 surface mount package, supplied on tape and reel (3000 units per reel), is smaller than most reed switches, allowing for use in automated pick-and-place component installation and can reduce production costs.
