MEDFORDAt the June 17 town council meeting, township manager Christopher Schultz said Medford is stepping up efforts to take down unsightly and illegal signs on utility poles around town.
According to Schultz, the state law that says its illegal to put signs on poles also requires utility companies to make a reasonable effort to keep signs off the poles. Schultz said he contacted Atlantic City Electric and was told they are overwhelmed by the number of signs on poles.
Schultz has decided to use money from the Clean Communities grant to pay two township public works employees overtime to take down the signs, zone by zone. He plans to bill the utility companies for the work, but the goal is to get the signs down as soon as possible.
The signs will be stored and inventoried. The township will then contact the legitimate businesses and give them warning that putting the signs on utility poles is illegal and they will be taken to court if it continues.
Schultz said the non-legitimate businesses, such as advertising for services like power washing, are difficult to get a hold of because they usually only provide cell phone numbers and will only allow you to leave a message. Since it is not a criminal issue, the police cannot look up the numbers.
Schultz would like some of the councilmen to go with him to Legislative District 8 and see if township can get power to make this illegal so police can go after them.
The issue of the illegal signs has come up several times in council meetings, most recently when a commercial property owner complained at the May 20 meeting that the signs are making the town look bad.
Schultz says the signs are a never-ending problem and the township has a part-time public official who has been doing her best to take them down.
He said signs are often put intentionally high up on poles, making them difficult to remove. Schultz has asked the public for help to provide license plates if they spot someone putting up a sign.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Your power bill may be feeling the heat this summer, but the experts gave us some tips to help cool it down.
Monitoring the temperature in your house is just the beginning.
With energy services at Georgia Power says anytime your thermostat drops below 78 degrees, it's going to cost you about 3-5 percent more on the power usage, Jack Dogan said.
When you're out of the home, remember to raise your thermostat. Dogan says the air conditioning should never be turned off completely because you'll be paying a lot of money when you eventually turn it back on. To keep air circulating throughout your house, keep the fans set to summer mode. The fan should be blowing air down, rather than up.
Experts also suggest changing the air filter regularly.
"Check or change the filter once a month...the reason is because a dirty filter makes the unit work harder," Dogan said.
Also, take a look at where your HVAC unit is.
"You want to make sure there aren't bushes around the system, its just sitting there alone," Dogan said.
He says leaves and twigs can get into the system and burn out the coils.

Volunteers helped the Housing Authority, the agency that runs the towns subsidized housing and has had financial trouble for some time, with some free clean-up work at Ballard green. Erica Grant photo
Cleaning gutters, weeding gardens, power-washing buildings, a group of about 30 volunteers from the international insurance firm SwissRe spruced up the Ridgefield Housing Authoritys Ballard Green apartments, as a Habitat for Humanity project.
It was a boon to the agency that runs the towns subsidized housing that has had trouble making ends meet.
I know the Housing Authority faces big challenges, said Kent Rohrer, a Ridgefielder who volunteers for Housatonic Habitat for Humanity.
Mr. Rohrer and fellow Ridgefield Habitat volunteer Dave Choplinski organized the effort, which brought SwissRe volunteers to Ridgefield on Thursday, June 19.

SwissRe used to be in Stamford but now their headquarters is in Armonk, Mr. Rohrer said. They have many volunteers in Fairfield-Westchester area.
The volunteers came from far and wide.
They came from all over the place New Jersey, Long Island, New York City. There were some Ridgefielders, some people from Trumbull, Easton and Greenwich, said Housing Authority Chairman Bob Hebert,
They tackled all the stuff that volunteers could do weeding, power-washing, cleaning gutters, that kind of thing.
