Erin McCandlish was shocked to find her porch barren.
I came out to water my flowers, and I saw my magazines that were on my front porch across the lawn, And at first, I was thinking Did we have a major windstorm that I missed?" she says.
McCandlish quickly realized that it was no accident. Her front porch was empty after being filled with wicker furniture.
I felt very violated and just the fact that this is part of our house, so just the fact that someone was up here.
She immediately called police and filed a report. When she posted the information on a Clintonville Crime and Blockwatch Facebook page, she learned she was not alone.
On this street, apparently last week, a few streets down on Foster (Street) as well, someone must have taken furniture from their front porch, she said.
McCandlish says it is the type of neighborhood where everyone watches out for each other. There are several surveillance cameras mounted on nearby homes and now she's hoping one of those cameras may have, at the very minimum, caught the suspects vehicle
Neighbor Jessica Black was recently looking for porch furniture on Craigslist, and she believes criminals are trying to sell the goods online.
People are posting that they're offering a reward if people can find their stolen porch furniture, added Black.

'Social club' proposed in residential development
EXETER The vacant lot that was once home to an old garage at 1 Franklin St. may soon become an "enchanting pocket neighborhood" where townhouses designed with porches to create a friendly atmosphere would be built along with a central clubhouse for residents.
The project, called Porches of Exeter, is part of a plan by current property owner Al Lampert to revitalize the Franklin Street area of downtown Exeter.
"The goal of the Porches neighborhood is to create a small community of active, engaged adults who desire a lifestyle built around close neighborly connection, healthy eating, physical activity, civic engagement and social vitality," Porches of Exeter founder Kathleen Mahoney said in a letter explaining the project submitted to the town.
The project is expected to go before the Zoning Board of Adjustment Tuesday night to seek a variance allowing for fewer parking spaces than required. While most of the project will be built in the commercial district, a portion of it is planned in a residential zone, meaning a second variance would be needed.
"A central component of the plan is to build front porches on all the homes to foster visibility, friendliness and connection among neighbors and passersby," Mahoney said.
According to plan, the project will also include The Club at Porches, which is described as a "supper and social club" that serves dinner only with members who will use the club mainly between 6 and 9 p.m. when other businesses have closed to ease the impact on downtown parking. The dining area would seat 75 people.
"We are targeting 100 memberships, 15 of which are residents who live in the homes in the Porches pocket neighborhood," the plan said.
Eleven out of the 15 planned townhouses have already been approved by the Planning Board, according to Lampert.
The project's small pocket park and parking lot planned for the corner of Franklin and Clifford streets would "call attention to the charming architecture of the Blue Moon and the Long Block, resulting in a friendlier, softer, more open and airy, welcoming face at this gateway point in the town," the plan said.

Jun 16, 2014 Indiana State student Zachary Nickerson holds a bat while doing research in the field.
As spring turns to summer, many of us enjoy the longer days by lingering on our back porches or sitting by the pool.
It's the latter on which researchers at the Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and Conservation at Indiana State University are focusing. They would like the public's help in understanding how bats use swimming pools.
A nationwide survey is now available online, so if you own, use or manage a swimming pool, you can provide valuable information. Even if you have never seen a bat near your pool, that's important, researchers say.
Anecdotal reports suggest bats use swimming pools for drinking, perhaps especially in areas where natural water sources are scarce, said student researcher Zachary Nickerson, a junior from Columbus, Ind.
"Bats drink water in-flight, so they come down, take a drink and fly out all in one motion. They can't land and drink and take off again. So if there's an obstruction in the way or the pool is too small or something goes wrong, they can get trapped in the pool and die," Nickerson said.
To participate in the voluntary survey, go to batsandpools.wordpress.com .
This is the second year for the research project, which started after Joy O'Keefe, assistant professor of biology at Indiana State and director of the Bat Center, started hearing reports about dead bats being found in swimming pools. O'Keefe confirmed these anecdotes with a colleague in Texas and decided research was needed to determine if the phenomena was widespread.
Last year, 78 percent of the nearly 400 respondents reported seeing bats near their pools; 13 percent reported drowned bats.
"We're definitely finding what we were expecting to find," said Nickerson, who is double majoring in biology and chemistry. "With 300-plus (respondents), we got good data and good spatial distribution, but we need more to make the conclusions concrete."
