July is prime time for relaxing on the porch, and Western New York has some real beauties from charming Colonials to … - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Whether its for reading, entertaining or simply keeping up with the neighbors, a front porch for many is a most inviting retreat. Not quite inside but not quite out, a porch offers shelter from the rain, a place to work a crossword puzzle, a cozy spot for unwinding after a long day. Porches of many styles are found on homes of all ages including new houses, as many homeowners long to become better connected to their communities.

The best old porches have been lovingly cared for or restored, and the best new ones reflect the architectural style of the house and look as if they have always been there.

In the summer its a joy to come across an attractively decorated porch. American flags, colorful pillows, railing planters packed with flowers and dining tables topped with vintage linens all help create what one homeowner called an outdoor living room.

Then again, upkeep and renovation can be costly. Theft of furniture is not unheard of, which is why some homeowners secure it to railings. Privacy may become an issue. A street-facing porch is not a private backyard deck.

Still, porch fans say the positives outweigh the negatives. Good conversations can take place here. Family memories made. A new or updated porch adds curb appeal.

Cost-wise, on an existing porch, you can spend a few thousand dollars to replace railings and porch decking, said Mike Washington, president of Ivy Lea Construction of Tonawanda.

Adding a new porch, from the ground up, can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 depending on materials and size, he said.

If the porch is structurally fine, you can spruce it up for a couple hundred dollars with a fresh coat of paint, he added.

Even small porches can offer plenty of charm, as can second-story porches beloved by many Buffalonians. You dont have to look far to spot some stylish porches. Turn to Page F5 to see some we came across.

The only thing missing from a recent visit to Marc and Susan Carpenters front porch was a parade on the nearby street. Early Americana is the theme here, with white wicker chairs, red cushions, a collection of flags and vintage decor. Most everything is original on this wraparound porch, including the pillars, floor and front door. Last year some of the wood spindles on the railing needed to be replaced because they had rotted.

Four men have been arrested in connection to a string of vehicle burglaries in Tangipahoa Parish that date back to May 2014.

The vehicle burglaries, more than a dozen, stretched between Old Covington Highway to River Road and into the City of Hammond.

Sheriffs detectives received information that 33-year-old Kevin Gales was the alleged primary suspect. Deputies say Gales was working with several associates in connection to these burglaries. The sheriff's office and the Hammond Police Department teamed up to catch the alleged crooks.

In the predawn hours of July 15, 2014, the Hammond Police Department stopped a vehicle occupied by Gales. During the roadside investigation, officers found four stolen firearms inside the vehicle. Two of the recovered firearms were reported stolen from a marked law enforcement unit on July 9, 2014.

Search warrants were executed at several homes in Hammond, including Gales' home. Investigators found numerous reported stolen items, including a bullet proof vest and ammo. Those items were reported stolen in May 2014.

Deputies say 33-year-old Kevin Gales, 18-year-old Cody Austin, 50-year-old Garvey Newman and 18-year-old Khalil Franklin, all of Hammond, were arrested. They were all chchargedith four counts of felony possession of a firearm and two counts of felony possession of stolen property.

Classic Sports Car Show gearing up to celebrate six years - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jaguars, such as this one, will be part of the annual Classic Sports Car Show that will be held on lower Main Street on Saturday, July 26. The event will be presented by the Bonneville Austin Healey Club. (Photo courtesy of Jim Revel)

Owners have shown off their Austin Healeys, Jaguars, Porches and other European autos to anyone who comes to see them.

This year, the Bonneville Austin Healey Club will sponsor the sixth Annual Classic Sports Car Show in Park City on Saturday, July 26. The vehicles will be on display from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

There is no charge for the public to come enjoy the cars and talk to the owners, according to Jim Revel, a member of the Bonneville Austin Healey Club.

In addition to Austin Healeys, there will be Jaguars, Porches and a couple of Corvettes, Revel said.

"The organizers are planning on having 60 vehicles entered this year," Revel told The Park Record. "There is still time for anyone to register their car."

Owners of any sports car manufactured before 1994 can enter the show.

"That doesn't sound like too long ago, but when you think about it, it was," Revel said. "So the cars that will be in the show will be at least 20 years old."

The date limit was set because the Austin Healey Club's goal was to get at least 60 cars registered for the show.

"In the past we've had between 30 and 40 cars on display," he said. "We also wanted to see if we can get younger car owners involved."

Council says no to exhibition hall loan - July 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A majority of City Council gave a cold reception to a request Monday night that it reconsider making a $14.5 million loan to the Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority for adding an exhibition hall to the Pueblo Convention Center.

On a separate issue, they also approved an ordinance to let Pueblo residents smoke pot on their front porches and backyards.

The PURA loan was the thornier issue, though.

Armed with a legal memo from City Attorney Dan Kogovesek saying council could make the loan without getting voter approval, Councilmen Steve Nawrocki and Chris Nicoll urged their colleagues to reconsider their 5-2 vote last June against the request.

Nawrocki and Nicoll were on the short end of that vote and they were reminded of that Monday.

Councilwoman Ami Nawrocki said the loan decision has been made and the two dissenting votes should accept that. She also said the $14.5 million loan from the citys half-cent fund for economic development would take interest money as much as $300,000 a year away from the city budget.

She said PURA still was free to build the project as originally planned through a $14.5 million bond issue.

Nicoll countered that it made no sense to require PURA to pay $12 million in interest over the life of that bond, when the city could provide the money from the half-cent fund.

He said President Sandy Daff and council members Chris Kaufman, Ed Brown, Ami Nawrocki and Eva Montoya should support the loan as a real economic development opportunity.

He challenged them that they had other plans for the $40 million in the half-cent fund such as road paving, parks and other improvements. Council held four town hall meetings on that subject in May and June.

CRIME ALERT: Neighbors Watching for Front Porch Burglar - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A crook has been caught on camera in Huntington. He's stealing packages from front porches.

Now, people in the neighborhood are on alert, as the brazen burglar goes door-to-door.

Neighbors said they've seen him before. In fact, one of them followed the man down the street and snapped a few more photos as he targeted other homes.

    The video is astonishingly clear.

"I'm sure it's happened to other people," said Christina Bailey.

Police said a man is walking around 12th Avenue and Huntington's South Side, on the hunt for your packages.

He was caught on surveillance video last week.

"That really made me nervous because he cut right through my yard, and I don't like the fact that someone so close had something stolen," Bailey said.

Rightfully so, Bailey lives just feet from the home in the surveillance video.

"I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I'm home during the day most of the time, and if we're going to have a package delivered, I make sure to keep an ear out for it," Bailey said.
