Jacksonville PorchFest invites you to Springfield to walk, look and listen.

The music festival and celebration of architecture involves 15 front porches along a route on the east side of Main Street.

You are the roving audience that strolls from porch to porch, stopping on the sidewalk or lawn to hear local musicians play everything from reggae and salsa to bluegrass and country to classical and pop.

While doing so, youre also encouraged to take in the architectural styles reflected in the porches featured on the route.

In the process, organizers hope youll get a sense of the friendly front-porch living that can be found in a neighborhood like Springfield.

Jacksonville PorchFest is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. A total of 20 musical acts are scheduled to perform. Food trucks and vendors open for business at noon, and the music performances begin at 1 p.m.

The free event takes place in Springfields southeast quadrant, east of Main Street and west of Liberty between First and Fifth streets. Parking will be available at a number of empty lots along Main Street.

Maps of porches will be provided at the corner of Third and Main streets.

Weve tried to have a fairly compact route thats easily walkable, said Christina Parrish, a Springfield Preservation and Revitalization board member and the chief organizer of the event.

As the name indicates, the festivals invitation extends citywide, she said. Its not just a Springfield block party.

Porches are adorned in spooky decorations and pumpkins are everywhere in Harford County, a clear sign that trick-or-treating isn't far behind.

It's one thing to decorate a porch or a pumpkin; it's another thing to find the perfect costume to decorate your body and suit your personality.

Costume stores around Harford County have done a brisk business selling Halloween get-ups to kids ready to trick-or-treat as well as older people headed to costume parties.

Many people try to find unique or creative costumes to express their personalities, but despite the creativity, some things never change.

When it comes to dressing up for Halloween, superheroes and the heroes of popular movies remain mainstays for customers looking for new outfits, employees at Harford's costume stores said recently.

The most popular costume for 2014? Not surprisingly, it seems to be the star of one of the most successful movies in recent years: "Frozen."

"What's been really popular has been Elsa," Jason Glassman, assistant manager of Costume Cabaret, at Festival at Bel Air, said.

The character of Queen Elsa, also known as the Snow Queen, from the hit animated movie remains a highly coveted costume for both children and adults, Glassman said.

"Everyone comes in looking for Elsa," Michael Burke, assistant manager at Bel Air's Halloween City, said.

The store is owned by, and next to, Party City at Route 24 and Baltimore Pike.

As you go trick or treating this year, there is a new colored pumpkin that might catch your eye on porchesand its not orange.

Its a blue teal pumpkina symbol of a new nationwide campaign by FARE, Food Allergy Research and Education, a national advocacy group for food allergy awareness, research and treatment.

The goal of the new campaign is to call attention to the importance of having alternative non-food treats for those children with food allergies.

FARE credits the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee (FACET) for this innovative idea, which it has now decided to promote throughout the U.S.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is designed to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies and to keep Halloween a fun, positive experience for all, according to the FARE website.

Teal, a dark blue-green is actually the official color for food allergy awareness, and this campaign serves as a reminder about how we should think about alternative non-food ways (necklaces, coins, bracelets, playing cards, stickers vampires teeth) to provide treats on Halloween for those with food allergies.

The campaign is encouraging people to display blue teal pumpkins or paint their pumpkins blue. For those with allergies to pumpkins, plastic pumpkins are an alternative which can easily be painted blue with acrylic or spray paints, according to FARE.

Food allergies are a serious problem in the US according to FARE, affecting up to 15 million people in the US, and as many as 1 in 13 children. Allergic reactions from foods can lead to skin rashes (hives), difficulty breathing (wheezing), gastrointestinal complaints (nausea and vomiting) as well as potentially cardiovascular collapse (anaphylaxis). Immediate treatment with epinephrine given as an intramuscular injection in the thigh can be lifesaving. Tree nut and peanut allergies are among the most severe allergies for teens and can affect social development, mental outlook and nutritional balance in developing children and teens.

FARE is reaching out to families, schools and communities to emphasize the importance of placing a teal blue pumpkin alongside your standard pumpkin or jack-o-lantern as a symbol of awareness of those who have food allergies and may not be able to partake in the treats of Halloween.
