Five Arrested For Stealing Holiday Packages From Front Porches - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHICAGO (CBS) Police were warning residents to be careful when having holiday gifts delivered to their homes, after five people were arrested for stealing packages from victims front porches in three separate incidents.

Police said the three incidents on Monday were not related, but all involved suspects stealing parcels that had been delivered to homes on the North Side, and left outside the homes.

Travis Slaughtaire, 21, was charged with one count of felony theft, and Dwayne Bullock, 20, was charged with misdemeanor theft, for allegedly stealing two packages from the porch of a home in the 1700 block of West Diversey Avenue around 10 a.m. Monday.

Elizabeth Quilez, 49, was charged with two counts of felony theft, after allegedly stealing packages from the front porches of two homes on the 6200 and 6300 blocks of West Patterson Avenue around 2:45 p.m.

In both instances, the stolen items were recovered and returned to the victims, police said.

A 50-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were arrested around 3:30 p.m. after stealing a package from the front of a home on the 1600 block of North Wood Street. Charges were pending against the pair.

Police said, during the holidays, police often target delivery trucks, follow them, and then steal packages left outside homes. Sometimes the thieves are so brazen, they open the packages right then, and if they dont like whats inside, they just leave it there.

Police advised shoppers to make sure they get what they ordered by having packages delivered to a place where they or someone else will be to accept the package when its delivered such as their workplace, or the home of a friend or relative who is at home during the day and make sure a signature is required for delivery, so the package wont simply be left on the porch or doorstep.

Lori Boym had three packages swiped from her front door this year and now shipping to her home is no longer an option.

I have everything come to the office, she said.

Police arrest 2 package snatching suspects - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) - Police say they've arrested two men suspected of snatching packages from porches and doorsteps in central Pennsylvania since October.

But WJAC-TV (http://bit.ly/12lMOLC ) reports investigators aren't naming the men - who are being held on other warrants - because they're still trying to recover the stolen packages and determine how many the men stole.

The investigation began in Bellefonte and Spring Township, but police in Ferguson and Patton townships - also in Centre County - started receiving similar reports, too.

Some witnesses saw a silver-colored van in the area of some theft and police say the van's owner was wanted on some older charges when they caught up to the men Monday.

Police say they found some of the stolen packages in the van and police say at least 20 packages have been taken so far.

Package Thief In Highland Caught On Video - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HIGHLAND (CBSLA.com) Police are searching for a man who was caught on video stealing packages from porches moments after UPS drops them off.

San Bernardino County Sheriffs detectives say a man was seen on surveillance video following a UPS truck while the driver made deliveries in the 28000 block of Foxtail Way in East Highland.

Moments after the UPS driver leaves the package on the porch of the residences, the suspect parks around the corner, gets out of his car and takes the packages from the porch, authorities said.

The suspect was described as a black man with a shaved head and a short braided goatee. He drove a newer model, maroon Nissan sedan, possibly an Altima or Maxima.

Because of the holiday season and increased number of packages being delivered, detectives believe there may be more victims. Anyone with information about the suspect or who believes they are a victim can call Detective Matthew Mayer or Sergeant Ryan Collins at (909) 425-9793.

Police warn of holiday package thefts in Lakeview - December 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHICAGO (WLS) --

Police said they arrested five people on Monday in connection with three separate package theft incidents. There are many more thieves still out there, though, with an eye on your holiday gifts.

"The holidays are a time where it brings out the best in people - charitable giving and things like that - but unfortunately, some people do take advantage of that. They know that packages are being delivered," said Sgt. Brendan McCrudden, Chicago Police Dept.

Police are investigating a string of package thefts in Lakeview, in which boxes are snatched from porches, courtyards, or vestibules. Eyewitness News spotted several boxes left in unsecured areas.

"I, for one, sometimes have it delivered here, sometimes have it delivered to my office to mitigate the damage or potential damage," said Kevin Jones, a Lakeview resident.

"I've lived here for ten years. I've had packages that have disappeared from my porch, probably two or three times over the past few years," said John Johnson, a Lakeview resident.

Police say the thieves often follow delivery trucks looking for an opportunity, and they don't always know what they're taking.

In one incident in the 3200-block of North Kenmore, baby items were stolen.

"Sometimes it's worthless to them, and sometimes we're actually finding the boxes ripped open and the stuff just discarded because it wasn't of interest to them," Sgt. McCrudden said.

Police are reminding residents to use common sense: ship items to your office if you can't be home to receive it, and request signed delivery, so packages aren't left at your door. If you live in a building, don't prop doors open for strangers.

Bay Area police offer tips to prevent package thefts - December 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Police are offering tips to prevent packages from being stolen from people's front porches, Palo Alto police said Saturday.

"This is a crime that occurs in virtually every community in our country," police said in a statement. "Packages that are left unattended make for easy targets for criminals."

Police said package thefts commonly occur during normal working hours, when many people are not at home.

To avoid becoming a victim, police offered the following tips:

    - If your employer will allow it, have packages delivered to your office.

    - If not, have packages delivered to a place where they can be received in person, such as the home of a trusted neighbor who stays home during the day, or a retired relative.

    - Request the shipper require a signature confirmation or hold your package at their pick-up facility so you can pick it up in person at your convenience.

    - If purchasing from a large retailer, request that your package be delivered to a local branch of the store so you can pick it up in person at your convenience.

    - Request a specific delivery date and time from the shipper when you know you will be home.

    - Provide delivery instructions to the sihpper so that packages can be left at a safe location at your home that is out of sight from the street.

Two arrested for stolen packages in Centre County - December 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated: Monday, December 1 2014, 06:00 PM EST

    Reported by: Erin Calandra

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Police in Centre County said they nabbed two men who they believe have been stealing UPS and FedEx packages off of front porches for weeks.

There are about 20 packages in total so far.

These arrests are the result of team work between all police departments across Centre County.

6 News has been following this story since Bellefonte and Spring Township police took the first reports several weeks ago.

Soon after, Ferguson and Patton Township police also received calls about missing packages.

So police quickly realized the alleged package thieves were targeting municipalities all across the area.

Patton Township police said their patrol officers spotted a silver van last week that matched the description given to police by several witnesses.

Police said the owner of that van had several outstanding warrants, and when they searched the vehicle, they found numerous stolen packages, some of them dating back to October.
