Package Thief Hits Santa Clara Area -

EUGENE, Ore. Some people in the Santa Clara area ordering gifts online arent receiving them. Someone is driving around neighborhoods taking them off their porches. Police say a person in a light colored pick-up truck is canvassing the neighborhood and stealing multiple packages off of peoples front porches when theyre not home.
One neighbor says he saw the truck driving up and down the street multiple times and then the driver stopped, ran onto his neighbors front steps and took four packages with him.
Neighbors are using facebook pages to spread the word about this theft, so others dont fall victim to the crime.
We in our neighborhood actually use social media as kind of an electronic neighborhood watch. If we see something going on well posts on Irving area, Santa Clara area facebook pages and other people will say oh I saw that too, said Stewart Gilbert.
The Lane County Sheriffs Office is offering some tips to avoid this type of crime. LCSO recommends getting the package delivered to the store youre ordering it from, an office, or friends house where you know someone will be home during the day.
It also recommends tracking your packages, so you can bring them inside as soon as theyre dropped off.

A man and a woman have been arrested for allegedly stealing packages from the porches of the homes of Ramsey residents, authorities said Saturday.
The man was arrested for the same crime in Paramus earlier this month, police from both communities said.
Alex Beltransarcay, 32, and Glennys Cuevaslorenzo, 27, both of Newark, were arrested Friday after plainclothes Paramus officers Detective Glen Pagano and Officer Paul Siemon saw the couple traveling southbound on Route 17 shortly after hearing a dispatch from Ramsey police at 5:12 p.m. to be on the lookout for a 2004 BMW X5.
The officers stopped the BMW near the Garden State Parkway and noticed numerous packages in the passenger compartment of the car that had been taken from several Ramsey homes, police said.
Both Beltransarcay and Cuevaslorenzo were charged with possession of stolen property and transported to the Bergen County Jail. Beltransarcay was placed on a $25,000 bail; Cuevaslorenzos bail was set at $10,000.
Beltransarcay was arrested by Paramus police on Dec. 1 on similar charges and had been released on a $5,000 bail.

Missing a Christmas gift delivery on the Near East Side? Someone might have taken the package off your porch.
A Jenifer Street woman called police after a package delivered by the U.S. Postal Service had been stolen from the front porch of her home.
That was one of about a dozen similar thefts that have been reported in Madison, mostly in the isthmus part of the city.
"USPS tracking indicated the package had been delivered shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, and it had been placed on an unsecured porch," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "When the woman got home, it was gone."
A police crime analyst determined there had been similar incidents over the last month involving USPS, FedEx and UPS deliveries.
"Residents expecting deliveries may wish to have packages routed to places of work or other locations where someone is present," DeSpain said.

Authorities continue to investigate the theft of packages off the porches of residents of the community.
The Council Bluffs Police Department received reports from at least five residents reporting the theft of packages from the porches of houses in late November, Sgt. Chad Meyers said. The thieves would walk up to the porch and grab the package, which had been dropped off by companies including UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service.

This is prime time for package thieves, but there is hope and help for people who go online to protect whats on their porches.
Crooks know more people get packages in December more than any other month.
Video: More packages stolen fresh off the delivery truck
I found out that I was one of three on the same day that lost a package, said Carla Wingfield of Council Bluffs.
Someone trolled the neighborhood and stole boxes from front porches.
The poor thief that took mine, I hope hes really happy with the dog food and biscuits that he got, Wingfield said.
Police said they knew of at least six thefts. The latest was on Wednesday night.
We are trying to head this off before it gets into a worse state, said Sgt. Dave Dawson of the Council Bluffs Police Department.
Wingfield and her neighbors went to nextdoor.com to help stop criminals before they commit crimes. The online neighborhood bulletin board allows people to post messages and warn their neighbors.
This has kind of brought us all together without having any face-to-face contact, Wingfield said.

Johnson
Toney
Two Cleveland men are accused of stealing several packages off porches in Westlake.
A Stonehedge Drive resident called police at about 12:05 p.m. Wednesday to report seeing the passenger of a black Cadillac steal a parcel off a neighbors porch, according to Westlake police Capt. Guy Turner.
Westlake and North Olmsted police responded, and a North Olmsted officer stopped the vehicle on Walter Road.
The driver, Hermon Toney, 28, and passenger, Jamir Johnson, 22, both of Cleveland, were arrested by Westlake Police, and several packages that had been stolen from two homes on Stonehedge drive were recovered, Turner said.
The Cadillac belongs to Johnsons mother.
Toney and Johnson were each charged with two counts of theft, three counts of possessing criminal tools and carrying various weapons for a stun gun.
Johnson also was charged with illegal conveyance, two counts of criminal trespass, illegal possession/abuse of food stamps, and possession of marijuana, and he has an active warrant from the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Office.
Toney has previously been convicted of robbery with a gun specification, attempted burglary and probation violation.
