Neighbors combat package poachers online - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This is prime time for package thieves, but there is hope and help for people who go online to protect whats on their porches.

Crooks know more people get packages in December more than any other month.

Video: More packages stolen fresh off the delivery truck

I found out that I was one of three on the same day that lost a package, said Carla Wingfield of Council Bluffs.

Someone trolled the neighborhood and stole boxes from front porches.

The poor thief that took mine, I hope hes really happy with the dog food and biscuits that he got, Wingfield said.

Police said they knew of at least six thefts. The latest was on Wednesday night.

We are trying to head this off before it gets into a worse state, said Sgt. Dave Dawson of the Council Bluffs Police Department.

Wingfield and her neighbors went to nextdoor.com to help stop criminals before they commit crimes. The online neighborhood bulletin board allows people to post messages and warn their neighbors.

This has kind of brought us all together without having any face-to-face contact, Wingfield said.

Cleveland men charged with stealing packages off porches - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Johnson

    Toney

Two Cleveland men are accused of stealing several packages off porches in Westlake.

A Stonehedge Drive resident called police at about 12:05 p.m. Wednesday to report seeing the passenger of a black Cadillac steal a parcel off a neighbors porch, according to Westlake police Capt. Guy Turner.

Westlake and North Olmsted police responded, and a North Olmsted officer stopped the vehicle on Walter Road.

The driver, Hermon Toney, 28, and passenger, Jamir Johnson, 22, both of Cleveland, were arrested by Westlake Police, and several packages that had been stolen from two homes on Stonehedge drive were recovered, Turner said.

The Cadillac belongs to Johnsons mother.

Toney and Johnson were each charged with two counts of theft, three counts of possessing criminal tools and carrying various weapons for a stun gun.

Johnson also was charged with illegal conveyance, two counts of criminal trespass, illegal possession/abuse of food stamps, and possession of marijuana, and he has an active warrant from the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Office.

Toney has previously been convicted of robbery with a gun specification, attempted burglary and probation violation.

Thieves stealing packages from porches - December 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In many cases the thefts are captured on tape. Homeowners can see brazen thieves swiping the gifts and boxes from their front porch just after they are delivered to their homes.

It happened to Denee Forbes. She was inside her house in Rochester and never saw what happened until she checked her surveillance video.

Sure enough, the cameras outside the Forbes home caught the entire crime on tape. That video helped police catch the suspect, who was charged with similar crimes in the City of Rochester and Irondequoit.

Since that happened back in September, the Forbes are more careful when leaving packages on their porch. Denee knows when her items will be picked up and delivered, so nothing is left for long periods outside.

Forbes also leaves her drapes open so she can see what's happening in front of her house. She advises other homeowners to get security cameras to protect their property.

Not only are thieves stealing property, in some cases they are following delivery trucks and then waiting until they leave, to snatch the items.

Companies like FedEx said customers can take steps to protect their deliveries. You can customize the delivery by pinning down when it will arrive or asking that someone sign for the package before it is left on the porch. You can also ask a neighbor to pick up your deliveries or ask the delivery company to leave it in a less obvious spot.

Forbes said the sad thing is that for her door-to-door delivery is a must. She runs a business from her home. It's convenient. She doesn't want to have to pick up items from Fed Ex or UPS.
