Where We Live: Pleasant Plains is carving out its own (non-Columbia Heights) identity - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Audrey Hoffer January 16

Pleasant Plains has a lower profile than the neighborhoods that surround it inNorthwest Washington Columbia Heights, LeDroit Park, Bloomingdale and Park View.

In fact, its often referred to as Columbia Heights. If we look at our tax assessments our neighborhood is called Columbia Heights, but in our deeds it says Pleasant Plains, said Darren Jones, a lifelong resident, president of the Pleasant Plains Civic Association and co-founder of the Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force. Thats because the city can charge more, because Columbia Heights houses are bigger.

Still, Pleasant Plains residents say that doesnt stop them from trying to ensure their neighborhood gets the respect it deserves.

Jones and Patrick Nelson are leading activists who can rattle off a list of accomplishments toward that goal.

We work together on everything, said Nelson, vice president of the civic association and a 22-year resident. For example, getting 19 stops on the Pleasant Plains Heritage Trail. We lobbied the city for three years.

The Georgia Avenue Window Walk is another project. We put local artwork in the windows of vacant storefronts, Jones said, pointing to colorful paintings on glass, paper and brick in empty stores.

Ingrid Frey, who moved into her Pleasant Plains condo more than five years ago, works on this project. Anytime I heard about neighborhood events, I joined, she said. That got me to know the community, merchants, and I learned how much people care about living here.

Banneker Recreation Center, built in 1939 as the citys first such facility built for African Americans, was dilapidated until recently. Today, there are two ball fields, a pool, a playground and basketball courts. It was rebuilt through community pressure and lots and lots of meetings, Nelson said.

Sherman Avenue also benefited from local input. We lobbied the D.C. Department of Transportation and worked with [former council member] Jim Graham to reduce traffic, Nelson said. The result was installation of a median in the middle of the boulevard.

New Website for Colorado Mountain Home Real Estate Site The Porches at Steamboat Springs - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Steamboat Springs, CO (PRWEB) January 15, 2015

When The Porches at Steamboat Springs opened eleven years ago, it was certainly a one-of-a-kind property concept for the popular ski resort and cowboy town. Although condominiums were still all the rage for ski travelers, The Porches owners Bruce Shugart and Shane Evans liked Steamboat Springs themselves so much they envisioned a neighborhood of spacious and gracious homes rather than the two to four bedroom condo towers going up in other resorts. As avid skiers, recalled Bruce Shugart, Shane and I had been to all the Colorado ski resorts. From the slopes we could see the lodging properties, and of course we sampled each ski areas aprs ski and night life as well. We found we kept coming back to Steamboat Springs and it became our favorite resort destination for the terrain and for the town. We knew we had to be a part of Steamboat Springs lodging and Steamboat Springs real estate.

Shugart and Evans were already well established in the Aspen/Snowmass destination as accomplished builders of luxury homes, ranches and commercial buildings. Their business, Structural Associates Company, also provides maintenance and management services after construction and landscaping is completed. To manifest their vision for Steamboat Springs, Shugart and Evans created Mountain Meadow Preserve LLC, acquired 16 acres just 400 yards from the ski area base, and then began to build a different sort of lodging option that could be a mountain home rather than just a rented condo. Homes at The Porches are 3,000 to 5,000 square feet and are multilevel with three fireplaces, including one in the master bedroom. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom, and there is a game room with either pool table or fooseball table or both. Wireless internet access is complimentary, and each unit will have multiple flat screen TVs. Each home has its own large porch, which has become a most valuable amenity as travelers have discovered the perfect weather that is summer in the Rockies. All homes are easy walking to the free city bus system, but The Porches also provides complimentary private transportation to restaurants, shopping, getting around town and to the mountain if necessary. The Barn is the multiuse community facility where guests arrive and where the full time concierge is available both before and during a visit. There is a workout room and a steam room, outdoor heated pool, hot tub and fire pit, game room, and a towering stone fireplace in the lounge area. The expansive amenities and activities at The Barn are offered to those with whole ownership, fractional ownership, and to luxury rental guests.

The Porches at Steamboat Springs has continued to build, and in the second half of 2014 it became apparent that a more sophisticated website would better serve the current owners and those looking for a luxury experience in a Colorado vacation resort with its own Old West traditions and legendary yearly snow totals. Wandzilak Web Design was contracted to redesign and build a site that would showcase the integration of space and place in a unique mountain setting. We are so pleased at the uptick in interest weve seen since our website expanded and began to offer more viewer interaction, said The Porches General Manager Emilie Crider. We will use our online photo gallery to show the unique interiors and exteriors of our homes, and as always we will provide a calendar of local Steamboat events. The best of this years ski days are yet to come, but we are already looking forward to our summer rodeos and concerts.

The new website for The Porches at Steamboat Springs has information for travelers looking for a short stay with luxury cachet and amenities prior to buying, and contact information for those looking for mountain home ownership in a world class resort.

Outdoor homescapes - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the Victorian era, porches were considered essential extensions of the well-dressed homes. They were havens for womens charitable society meetings, gracious teas and dinner parties, and discreet courting under the stars. After World War II, when countless Victorian homes were torn down to make way for modern, low maintenance houses, the front and the back porches, wraparound veranda, and side porch often took a backseat to the popular patio designs of the day. Today, however, the porch is enjoying a renaissance, as people everywhere are discovering that this outdoor room not only adds beauty to their homes facade but helps protect the home from the suns intense rays, saving on air-conditioning costs. The porch also provides a warm weather living room for entertaining, alfresco dining, reading, and meditating, and it is a superb place from which to watch nature. While some homes have a traditional open-air porch, others have screened porches to keep insects and animals at bay. A new favorite is a convertible porch, which can be adjusted to serve an open, screened, or totally enclosed porch with glazed inserts. Other delightful outdoor living spaces that can promote hospitality or quiet relaxation include open-air decks, romantic courtyards, sunny patios, loggias (roofed galleries on the side of homes), and decorative gazebos.

Part of the joy of creating outdoor living rooms is that they can be simply or elaborately furnished and still feel enchanting, for nature is always there to provide dramatic lighting, cooling breezes, and calming fragrance, color and sound. A wide variety of outdoor furnishings is available, such as classical or ornate cast-iron garden benches, tables, and chairs; colorful Parisian bistro chairs; minimalist metal, teak, and mahogany furnishings; and ancient-looking garden benches crafted from stone. Synthetic wicker is a favorite all-weather material for outdoor rooms of every style. Synthetic mesh hammocks, woven cotton hammocks, and wooden porch swings are also popular. Outdoor furnishings crafted from branches, roots, and twigs are also sought after.

Va. Beach residents use blue lights to support police - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Elisabeth Hulette The Virginian-Pilot January 11, 2015

    VIRGINIA BEACH

    Have you seen the blue?

It glows off front porches, where some residents have been replacing their usual light bulbs with blue ones. They're doing it to show support for police officers - a reminder that their work and the risks they take are appreciated.

"There's definitely a lot of support out there," said Charlie Sheerin, manager of the Home Depot on Lynnhaven Parkway, one of several stores that were sold out of blue bulbs Friday afternoon. "And rightfully so."

Officer Tonya Borman, a police spokeswoman, said the idea came from the nationwide Project Blue Light, which has been around for a while. It asks people to display blue lights in support of military and law enforcement personnel. But she said she's noticed more lights these days in the wake of the high-profile shootings of two New York City officers and marches around the country showing support for police.

Several hundred people attended a rally last weekend at Town Center.

    Officers have noticed, Borman said.

"Personally, you drive down the road and see all these blue lights, and it means a lot," she said.

Sheerin said his Home Depot has a rainbow display of colored light bulbs, but only the blue ones are sold out. Taylor's Do it Centers on Independence Boulevard in Virginia Beach and Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake also were sold out Friday, workers said.

Postal Service Asks for Stateliners' Help During Snowstorm - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ROCKFORD -- With a significant snowstorm approaching, the mail will still get through, and the Rockford Post Officeto make sure their sidewalks, stairs and porches are clear to ensure mail delivery and help keep postal workers safe.

Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow, said Rockford Postmaster Steve Schwalenberg in a news release. Maintaining a clear path to the mail box - including steps, porches, walkways and street approach - will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service.

The main issue is for those who receive door delivery from postal workers on foot, where clear sidewalks, steps and porches need to be clear. But even people who get their mail delivered curbside by vehicles need to remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Schwalenberg says delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenthe situation is too dangerousfor theletter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort, says Schwalenberg. Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.

Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to help keep them clear of snow and ice.
