Front porches will bring at-home atmosphere to Vancouvers Robson Street - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Robson Street will soon be a place to come home to.

This years VIVA Vancouver installation has been selected and will see a series of front porches installed in the 800-block Robson Street, in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The design was created by Chicago-based architectural design company Design With, led by architects Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer, and selected by a blind jury review.

It is the first time in VIVA Vancouvers five-year run that the seasonal public space installation will be created by designers from outside Vancouver.

The installation, titled Porch Parade, will feature an ad hoc arrangement of front porches in vibrant colours, with lawn furniture available to the public for use.

The design features a collection of porches that at first appear abstract but when full of visitors, will be a lively and familiar atmosphere for downtown Vancouver, read a media release announcing this years VIVA Vancouver installation.

The porches will be installed and open to the public by July 1, and will remain in public until Labour Day, when Robson Street will be reopened to vehicle traffic.

This years public space design project was selected from among 81 submissions.

A design honorarium of up to $40,000 will cover costs of materials, fabrication, construction, installation and de-installation.

In a few months, a block of Robson Street will be transformed into series of wooden porches painted in bright colours and open to public use.

The installation called Porch Parade is the winner of a design-build competition held by the City of Vancouver each year.

This year, a team from Chicago won the honour of sprucing up a block of Robson Street in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Cheryl Nelms with the City of Vancouver says the winning design allows a lot of interaction. "That's one of the keycriteriathat the judges were looking at ... the element of social connection," she said.

"This one was interesting because of more the idea of using this front porch concept, lots of use of colour and we just haven't sort of seen that before."

The design was chosen out of about 80 entries from around the world. It will be set up on Robson Street on July 1 through to Labour Day.

Not So Fast: No One Seems to Want Cheyenne's 'Free' Frontier Homes - March 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tuesday, March 17, 2015, by Rachel B. Doyle

With their gabled roofs, eggshell-blue shingled faades, and porches perfect for sipping Sarsaparilla, the trio of 1890s houses behind the governor's mansion in Cheyenne, Wyoming would seem to be just the sort of historic homes that the city would want to preserve. Yet for five years, their owners have been trying to give the charming fixer-uppers away for free, even offering to pay buyers $10K for the privilege.

But this is not the deal of the century. The lucky person who nabs these homes will have to move them off of the land where they currently stand, at an estimated cost of $200K, according to the New York Times. After Cheyenne's historic preservation board stepped in, the land owners were denied the demolition permit they sought, so a freebie seemed like the next best option. So far, they have shown nearly 100 people around the three painted homes, which are run-down but rich in period detail, but no one has jumped at the unusual offer. The NYT story has photos, and Google Maps has directions to Cheyenne.

Hebron wants in on Buckeye Lake talks - March 14, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Officials evacuate residents of a mobile home park in Hebron.]

HEBRON, Ohio They know all about flooding in the low-lying parts of this Licking County village.

Theyve peered out their windows and watched picnic tables float by. Theyve stood on their porches and gawked at waves licking the front steps. Theyve swapped rumors about just how bad it would get if the dam at Buckeye Lake, just a couple of miles away, failed.

But now that engineers say that last point is a significant worry, using scary words such as catastrophic failure, Hebron residents arent just talking about it.

We are concerned, said Clifford Mason, mayor of the 2,300-resident village. I think its important for someone from the village to be at the table.

Hebrons leaders didnt know about the alarming Army Corps of Engineers report concerning the earthen dams viability until news reports on Wednesday. Mason hopes to change that.

On Wednesday night, the village council agreed to send the state a letter outlining its concerns about Buckeye Lakes future. The council also asked that a Hebron representative, in this case Mason, be included in future discussions.

Though the village is up the road from the lake, across I-70, estimates still show that if the dam were to give way, water from the 3,000-acre lake would flood the homes of at least 3,000 people. That includes parts of Hebron, which could be flooded within two hours. That likely would inundate the villages water-treatment plant and areas that lie near the South Fork of the Licking River.
