Thieves Stealing Packages off Germantown Porches - February 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(Germantown, TN) Germantown police are trying to track down the thieves stealing packages off porches.

Frances Haynes says she does a lot of her shopping online.

I keep Amazon[.com] going, Haynes said, as she laughed.

Shes usually waiting for her package when it arrives on her front porch, I do watch, but I never thought I would be watching to keep someone from grabbing it before I do.

Shes now worried about thieves stealing those packages off front porches.

I`m not surprised, Haynes said. People are jobless and aimless and they`re grabbing what they can, I guess.

Investigators say four homes were hit in two days last week. Investigators believe the thefts are connected because of how close the homes are and the time of day.

This is shocking to me to even know that its happening, said Haynes.

Investigators want people to be alert and to make sure someone is home if a package is expected to be delivered.

Its easier now that shipments can be tracked online because, as Haynes said, a town like Germantown could be a gold mine for a thief.

The North Side woman who was injured when the porch and stairs from her second-floor apartment collapsed in the Allegheny Commons East complex remained hospitalized on Friday in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

Apartment management has agreed to hire an engineer to find out what caused Thursday afternoon's collapse in which Annette Wade, 51, was injured, and to examine and determine the safety of all the porches and exterior stairs in the complex along East Ohio Street, said John S. Jennings, assistant chief of Pittsburgh's Bureau of Building Inspections.

We are investigating the cause of this unfortunate incident, and fully cooperating with local officials, according to a statement from WinnResidential, the property management company which is based in Boston. We will take all immediate steps necessary to address any issues and to safeguard the safety of residents and visitors at Allegheny Commons East.

Pair accused of stealing packages off front porches - January 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MAIDENCREEK TWP., Pa. -

Two thieves are off the streets after swiping packages from the front porches of homes in Berks County, said police.

A small package was shipped and delivered, but never received. A quiet community in Maidencreek Township fell victim to the growing problem of thieves stealing packages from front porches.

"You don't think of it happening in your own neighborhood," said Steve Dybowski, who lives on the street where the package was taken.

According to police, the theft happened Thursday afternoon in the 400 block of Troy Drive.

An off-duty police officer saw two guys in a red Dodge minivan pull into a driveway. One man got out and swiped a package off the front steps, said police.

"He removed and carried the package back to the van, got into the van and drove off," said Sgt. Brian Horner, Northern Berks Regional Police Dept.

The off-duty officer followed the van and saw it back up into another driveway on Liberty Drive. The driver got out and went to the front of the house, but when he saw the officer, he acted like he was knocking on the door, said police.

"The driver ended up getting back into the vehicle and sped off," said Horner.

The off-duty officer approached the suspects. He was able to write down their registration and contact police.

Porches, Isidore rearranged, given uniform look - January 24, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Students may have been a little surprised when logging on to Porches or Isidore for the first time this semester. The sites received upgrades over break in preparation for the upcoming spring semester.

The upgrade to Porches was conducted to better facilitate internal communication with our university faculty, staff and students, according to Molly Wilson, assistant vice president for university marketing and strategies.

Sundar Kumarasamy, vice president for enrollment management and marketing, said the renovation takes the universitys portal to the next level and is an opportunity for us to streamline communications and to let the campus community be the first to know the information that defines us as a community.

The most prominent change is the rearrangement of tabs (pages) and channels (blocks of information). Tabs had been set in a linear fashion across the top of the front page, but they are now are found on the left side. The channels, which had previously been set in columns of three, are now arranged in two.

The front porch now includes a periodically changing feature story that highlights an important event or priority that the university wants the community to know, according to Wilson. That story will vary contingent on the individual users status as a student or as faculty and staff. The featured story incorporates a comment section to permit a reciprocal form of communication, an element that was lacking in the previous version.

The front porch will also include a profile of a UD community member and a new channel that will display either a poll question or feeds from the universitys social media channels.

According to Wilson, the university hopes to achieve enhanced functionality through Porches upgrades and establish a more consistent look with the universitys overall web presence. The ultimate goal of the sites overhaul was to continue to build our relationships and overall university community by providing an engaging online environment, she said.

Porches was introduced to the campus in February 2010 as an entry point for accessing information and tools that are relevant to individual students, according to What is Porches?, an explanatory YouTube video uploaded by the university.

Student responses have been mixed in regards to the redesign.

Justin Gregory, a junior economics and finance major, said he did not like it initially and leveled the criticism that Porches now has links to a bunch of things that I have no connection to. However, after some time tinkering with the novel features, the new interface had grown on him.

Medford woman caught stealing packages from Somerville porches - January 23, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A woman was allegedly caught stealing postal packages off private porches in Somerville and Medford last Tuesday. Dina DiMartino, 34, of Medford was charged with larceny, according to a police report.

On Jan. 15, Officer Henry Diaz and others responded to a Bay State Avenue home for a report of a suspicious people stealing packages off porches.

The resident who reported it said he looked out his living room window at 2:20 p.m. and saw an olive-skinned man in his thirties wearing dark clothing, about 5-foot-10, acting in a suspicious manner. He was reportedly walking in the middle of Bay State Avenue, scouting the front steps of homes and a woman wearing a blue hoodie and an orange vest was with him.

The resident said he saw the woman go onto the porch at another Bay State Avenue home where she looked through several packages lying on the floor and placed the items in her bag. She carried one of the packages, walked to the rear of a nearby driveway and came back out a little later. The she reportedly put the package she had been carrying in one of the trash barrels. It was later recovered by police, found empty and addressed to a person at a third Bay State Avenue home.

Officers soon spotted a woman matching description at the corner of Bay State Avenue and Kidder Avenue. She was caught carrying a large bag and originally told officers it belonged to her but then said it belonged to a friend. Inside, police found a large yellow envelope from Amazon addressed to a Bay State Avenue resident and it was torn open. When asked where she got it, the suspect was reportedly unable to give a credible answer.

Inside the bag officers found a small brown Eddie Bauer sweater, a large slate jacket, black JVC headphones, white JVC headphones, a Patriots winter cap, and other items. They also found five paper receipts/order summaries from various companies addressed to Bay State Avenue residents and Medford residents.

The woman was arrested on charges of larceny and taken to the police station for booking.

AUSTIN-- A couple of Christmas grinches have been recorded by surveillance cameras stealing packages from front porches in Southwest Austin.

Jason Wicker, who owns a home on Journeyville Drive near William Cannon and Southwest Parkway, said Friday he was alerted that four boxes had been delivered. When he got home and found only one, he checked his security tape.

Wicker found a woman taking newly-delivered packages that were supposed to be Christmas gifts. What she dropped, a man also wearing a green shirt, came and grabbed.

Looking at the video, Wicker points out, "You can see her right there with a clip board."

He said, she "looks in my house, looks in the window, sees nobody there she's in such a hurry she actually drops one of these packages when she is running."

Luckily, Wicker installed a securitysystem three weeks ago, which allows him to control the temperature and alarm with his cell phone. It also came with cameras, just in time to catch the Christmas crime.
