Police said they caught the thief who was stealing packages off front porches after the delivery man dropped them off.

Douglas County Sheriffs Office said 26-year-old Hugo Sanchez either tracked UPS trucks or saw the items as he drove by seven northwest Omaha homes last week.

Our thief was indiscriminate. He'd just go to any house, look for a box and if he found one, he'd steal it, said Chief Deputy Marty Bilek.

Bilek said the crime could have gone on for weeks if it wasnt for a victim catching Sanchez on his front porch.

The victim recorded his license plate and called police. Authorities found Sanchez at his home with more than $1,000 in deliveries.

Sanchez was booked on four charges of theft.

The Douglas County Sheriffs Office is working with UPS to get all of the packages back to the people who paid for them. They remind people to be on the lookout if they are expecting a delivery.

BEAVERTON, Ore. Beaverton police are trying to reunite victims with thousands of dollars in stolen property recovered from two suspects accused of stealing packages from front porches.

Forty-year-old Gina Lunetta and 29-year-old Vyacheslav Stan Malik were arrested March 6. The investigation began with the theft of two packages from a Beaverton home in January. The packages, delivered by UPS, contained expensive optometry equipment.

I called Beaverton Police and said I needed to file a report, said Dr. Laura Armstrong, one of the alleged victims.

Armstrong, who owns Alberta Eye Care, called police to report that a $2,500 eye-pen used for Glaucoma and Lasik patients was stolen, along with two pairs of frames.

Beaverton police called Accutome, the company that makes the equipment, Armstrong said. Accutome had gone onto eBay and typed in a serial number. All medical devices have serial numbers attached to them, and when you sell a medical device, you have to disclose the serial number.

Beaverton police were able to track down Armstrongs pen and the person who listed the items on eBay.

The people who stole it off our porch had sold it to a gentleman in Milwaukie who resells stuff on eBay, Armstrong explained. They told him it was from a closed medical supplies goods place and they got it for a discounted price.

The lead helped Beaverton police track down other stolen items, including thousands of dollars in property recovered at the Kings Row Inn in Milwaukie, where the suspects had stayed.

It ended up working out really well for everyone else involved because if they hadnt stolen a piece of medical equipment with a serial number they might have never found these people, Armstrong said.

Lunetta and Malik are lodged at the Washington County Jail on theft charges.
