Action 9: Thieves targeting packages left on shoppers’ porches - December 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Many shoppers buy gifts online and those gifts then are then dropped off on their porch. But thieves are snatching boxes right off people's doorsteps.

Action 9 noticed case after case in police reports and found out how online shoppers can try to keep it from happening to them.

Melissa Roy shops online a lot.

"Just because you don't have to deal with parking and the crowds," she said.

She bought dog toys from Amazon, tracked them, and thought they'd be on her porch. But they weren't. So she checked her surveillance cameras, which caught something shocking.

"I saw them clear as day," Roy said.

What she saw was two thieves taking her packages.

"I was frustrated, but then at the same time you kind of feel violated because somebody walked up on your porch," she said.

She filed a police report -- and Action 9 found others -- all just a few days apart from all over Charlotte. And according to the Better Business Bureau, victims can't blame the retailer or shipper.

Heading Out of Town? Make Sure to Tell Police - December 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

RICHMOND (WRIC) - 'Tis the season for travel and thieves know it.

There have already been reports of thieves breaking into homes, stealing packages from the front porches and now there's word a pajama prowler on the run in Church Hill.

Police say a man his plaid PJs was spotted going door to door in the 400 block of North 32nd Street before he broke into a home and stole a couple of laptops.

If you're heading out of town for the holidays you might want to tell police.

The Richmond Police Department offers a service where they will watch your house or your business for you.

"Outside our regular patrol, I think one of the best things the police department offers is a business and house watch program," says Lt. David Naoroz

Naoroz says all you have to do is fill out a house watch request form online or at your local precinct and an officer will cruise by your home or business while you're out of town.

"Give us some information, give us some details like who might have a key if there is an alarm system. It goes out to our patrol units and our patrol units in that area check on your house."

In addition to signing up for the house watch, make sure your home isn't an easy target for thieves.

"Maintenance and care of the outside of your house is really important," Naoroz says. "Making sure that your doors are locked... making sure that your there is a light on with a timer... making sure that you mail is collected."

Delco Police try to undo Grinch’s handiwork - December 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

NETHER PROVIDENCE Police are looking to reunite packages with their owners after a woman stole dozens of boxes off Delaware County porches. The Upland Borough woman admitted to driving around neighborhoods in the Nether Providence area and taking boxes left by delivery trucks, police said.

Police have not released the woman's name, because she has not yet been charged with a crime. When police finish their investigation, she faces charges of theft and receiving stolen property, said Chief David Splain of the Nether Providence Police Department.

On Dec. 5, a neighbor saw a woman in a red SUV pull up to a house in the 200 block of Cedar Road and take four packages off the front step, police said. Police used the license-plate number the neighbor gave them to find the driver. Police said the woman confessed to taking 26 packages on Dec. 5. Police said it appears the woman had turned over all the property she stole, including sneakers, J. Crew sweaters, and Pittsburgh Steelers socks.

However, she had already destroyed the boxes' address labels. Police are telling anyone with missing packages to check with their shipping companies to see if they were delivered. If they were, call the Nether Providence Police Department with a receipt. Several people called Friday reporting missing goods.

Modern-day Grinch? Onondaga deputies charge woman with stealing Christmas presents off house porches - December 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Camillus, N.Y. -- A homeless woman driving a U-Haul has been charged with stealing Christmas presents delivered by UPS and FedEx from the porches of houses, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said.

Patricia Morris-Girardin, 28, homeless, was charged with petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminally possessing a hypodermic needle.

Around 2:30 p.m. Thursday a deputy responded to a complaint of a woman driving a U-Haul truck who had stolen a UPS package from the front porch of a house on Cogswell Avenue in Geddes.

The deputy found and stopped the U-Haul truck on Milton Avenue and Horan Road in Camillus. The sheriff's office said the deputy saw that the U-Haul contained about $800 worth of stolen packages that were taken from the front porches in Camillus, Geddes and Solvay.

The sheriff's office said many of the stolen items were Christmas gifts that had been delivered by UPS and FedEx.

Deputy Herb Wiggins said Morris-Girardin's husband, who is in jail, sold their car so she could get the U-Haul. She was issued appearance tickets and released.

Anyone living in Camillus, Geddes or the village of Solvay that thinks they may have been the victim of a similar theft is asked to contact the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office at 315-435-2111.

Packages being stolen from porches in Asheville - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (WLOS)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. Someone is swiping packages off porches in Asheville in broad daylight.

According to police, the thefts have happened at least six times and three happened on Maywood Road in the past week.

Police think someone is following delivery drivers and swooping in to steal the parcels after they are dropped off.

One victim says its disturbing that people are doing this. But in her case, the thieves didnt make off with anything expensive.

My husband and I are going to an ugly Christmas sweater party. So they got one of those ugly Christmas sweaters, said Kristin Compton.

If you have packages on order, police say its a good idea to either have them delivered to a neighbor who is home or to where you work.

Some people are also putting up a note asking delivery drivers to leave parcels on a side or back porch.

Police investigate thefts of holiday packages from Berks front porches - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HAMBURG, Pa. -

Sneaky thieves are stealing holiday packages right off the front porches of some homes, authorities said.

Twice, over the past couple weeks, police say several packages were stolen off a porch in the 100 block of S. Third Street in Hamburg.

Both times, the packages were stolen from the same location, according to court documents.

Neighborhood surveillance cameras captured Ellis Garman of Reading, police said.

Garman was arrested and charged in connection with the crime.

But police say, sadly, there may be more victims.

"I think it's happening a lot more than we realize because I do not believe all of these thefts are being reported," said John Adams, Berks County district attorney.

Investigators say they believe the criminals are following delivery trucks like FedEx and UPS, and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

"Once those packages are delivered, and there's no one at home, those homes are being targeted," Adams said.
