It was listed on Trulia.com for $800 a month, but it was too good to be true. The property, at 935 Fruitland Road, fell into foreclosure in December. It's up for bid, but it was never up for rent. And the guy who claimed to own it wasn't transferred to Nigeria for missionary work like he said.

The rental listing was a scam, a newer version of one that has ensnared victims across the nation since the early 1980s. It was a first for the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

This is kind of a new one here, said Chief Deputy Frank Stout, but he added that it falls in line with other scams they've seen affecting the area recently. Officers are is encouraging people to be extra careful and suspicious of any dealings with unknown individuals who ask for money to be wired out of the United States and to Africa, especially.

Anytime that anybody is trying to get you to wire money ahead without a contract, do not do it, Stout said. If they say they are from Nigeria, he added, run, run, run the other way.

Savage started to see red flags right away. The owner, who went by the name of Sheldon Hopkins, wanted to text more than talk and when Savage did get him on the phone, the guy had a thick accent. Savage said the owner couldn't show him the house because he was transferred to Nigeria for three to six years for mission work, but was anxious to move someone in who would take care of the property.

The first thing he asked was 'when can you move in?' said Savage's wife, Lily Carpenter.

He didn't want background about us, Savage said. He was just ready to mail us the keys. He was ready to rent it.

He said Hopkins offered to mail him the keys and rental agreement paperwork as soon as he received an $800 deposit, which he asked to be wired to him in Lagos, Nigeria via Western Union. Huge red flag.

A 3-year-old boy was killed and another child critically injured when an extra-alarm fire swept two homes in the South Austin neighborhood Friday night, authorities said.

Two adults were also hospitalized, one of them in critical condition, after the fire that broke out just before 8 p.m. in the 100 block of North Laramie Avenue.

Firefighters arrived within three minutes of the first 911 call and found heavy fire on the porches of two occupied homes, Chicago Fire Department District Chief Don Hroma said. Fire officials called for an EMS Plan 1, which sent seven ambulances to the scene, and later elevated the fire to a 2-11 alarm.

Two children were taken from the scene to local hospitals in critical condition, officials said. One of them, Jaantwiaon Edwards, was declared dead at Loretto Hospital at 9:34 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Edwards lived in one of the two-story brick buildings that caught fire.

A woman in her 50s or 60s was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in critical condition, and a 40-year-old police officer taken to a local hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation, authorities said. The police officer was listed in fair-to-serious condition.

The Chicago Red Cross was helping 20 people displaced by the fire, according to the organization's official Twitter account.

Last week, the 125-year old Oceanside house in disrepair at 102 Pacific Street received a fresh coat of paint, its first since 1985.

For all its problems peeling paint, crumbling overhangs, and leaning porches its not the unobstructed view of the ocean and the pier that makes the house worthy of an upcoming full-scale renovation, nor is it because its one of the last, original, Oceanside Victorian-style beach cottages.

No, its the bug of Hollywood that made this house famous and worth spending large sums to restore it, according to the City of Oceanside and its historical society

Known as the Top Gun house, the light-blue cottage was a filming location for Tom Cruises character, fighter pilot Maverick, and his older woman love interest, flight instructor Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis. The 1986 blockbuster film used five San Diego County locations, including the Top Gun fighter-pilot training school located at the then Naval Air Station Miramar.

Cruises character makes out with McGillis on her couch, on the porch of the cottage. In another scene, in a fit of anger after being shunned by Charlie, Maverick speeds away on his motorcycle, north from the house, down Pacific Street, with the ocean and pier in the background.

Cruises casting, and subsequent large box-office draw of Top Gun, has been credited as starting his career as a Hollywood A list actor. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for McGillis. Although she has continued to work regularly through the decades, Top Gun was her last blockbuster role.

The house sits on a large, vacant piece of land right on the bluff overlooking the ocean. It is owned by the City of Oceanside and already approved for a high-rise resort hotel, which should begin construction in October. The developments deal included saving the house, which will eventually be moved and to another part of the resort and serve as some kind of a visitor facility, like maybe a gift shop.
