Roofs & porches giving way due to weather - February 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) It is dangerous to not clear off heavy snow, but in Massachusetts Thursday it proved deadly.

A 29-year-old woman was killed Thursday afternoon in Weymouth, just outside of Boston when her carport, piled with snow, collapsed on her.

Its critical that you get rid of the snow off roofs and have it done by a professional.

The string of winter storms caused a build up of snow and ice that is wreaking havoc on homes and buildings across the state.

Crews tore down a warehouse on Water Street in West Haven after the roof came crashing down Wednesday night. The vacant warehouse was an old building made of wood construction.

Officials say snowstorm after snowstorm took a toll on the building, the snow and rain along with the age of the building lead to the collapse.

The best thing for everybody and the way the walls were bulging out and the way they could fall in the street, we had to get the building down, said Deputy Chief Scott Schwartz, West Haven.

And a similar scene in New Haven. Heavy snow is being blamed for a porch collapse on another street. The build up of snow made the weight extremely heavy.

Decked out from coast to coast: Top outdoor living trends for 2014 - February 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(BPT) - From genteel porches in the East to sleek, seaside balconies in the West, the popularity of outdoor living spaces is poised for significant growth from coast to coast with industry analysts predicting it will be a $5.7 billion market by 2016. Reinforcing these projections, 63 percent of architects cite an outdoor living space as the most popular special function room in housing construction, according to the American Institute of Architects. Whats more, theHearth, Patio & Barbecue Association reports that homebuilders list decks among the top three features most requested with new home buys.

Decks and porches are now considered true extensions of a homes living space, says Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company, the worlds largest manufacturer of high-performance wood-alternative decking and railing. People are showing increased interest in maximizing the function, comfort and personalization of their outdoor spaces and are realizing that its far more economical to expand their living space outside than to enlarge or renovate their homes interior.

As planning and preparation for the 2014 outdoor living season begins, the experts at Trex offer a glimpse into the national trends that will be emerging outside homes across America in 2014.

Snow collapses shed at Middle Smithfield Township golf course - February 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    February 20, 2014

Melting snow has destroyed roofs and porches around the state. Now, Middle Smithfield Township has lost a building to a collapse.

A maintenance shed collapsed on the grounds of the township-owned golf course at Country Club of the Poconos on Wednesday morning. No one was working in or around the shed at the time of the collapse, according to township officials.

The shed was being used to store lawn mowing equipment used at the golf course, township Supervisor Annette Atkinson said Wednesday. It's not expected to delay the course from opening for the 2014 season.

"This is not going to affect our opening date at all," Atkinson said. "Fortunately it was just a storage building for equipment."

The full extent of the damage won't be known until the township clears the ice and snow from the site and begins removing the debris later this week.

Atkinson assured residents that there were no fertilizers or chemicals kept in the building that might affect groundwater in the area.

She said several area golf courses had seen the damaged shed and have offered their assistance.

Porches collapse on front of Fountain Hill homes - February 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. -

Porches on three row homes in Fountain Hill, Lehigh Co., collapsed Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters and rescue workers responded to the initial report of a structural collapse at 738 Seneca St. The roof of a fourth home appeared to be damaged and crews later took it down themselves. Some people were evacuated from adjoining homes.

"We ended up sticking the cameras through to make sure that there was nobody trapped underneath," said Asst. Chief David Boehrer with the Fountain Hill Fire Department.

He said there were no injuries. Power and gas were cut off but Boehrer said residents would be allowed back inside later Tuesday night once debris was cleaned up.

"If you can get access, try to push the snow off 'cause we're getting rain tomorrow and it's going to even be worse," Boehrer warned.

Joseph Roy, superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District, said the district was asked to open Fountain Hill Elementary School as a shelter for evacuated residents. Tables and chairs will be set up in the gymnasium or the cafeteria. District security and custodial personnel will be on hand to provide any assistance they can.

Fountain Hill residents heard 'thunk' as porches collapsed this afternoon – UPDATE - February 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

He assumed snow and ice had tumbled off the roof of his 738 Seneca St. home. That's been a common occurrence this winter, Sabol said, as snowstorm after snowstorm has pummeled the Lehigh Valley.

When he looked out the front window, however, Sabol realized that more than snow and ice had fallen onto the sidewalk. The porches of his row home and three adjacent residences -- 740, 742 and 744 -- had collapsed.

Sabol said the collapse occurred about 2:55 p.m. He called borough authorities before exiting the rear of his home.

"We're moving in a month or so, thank God," said 29-year-old Sabol, who lives in the home with a roommate.

Fountain Hill Fire Department Assistant Chief David Boehrer said no one was hurt in the collapse, which prompted an evacuation. An additional eight homes, four on either side of those directly affected by the collapse, were evacuated, as well, he said.

The evacuations were a precaution, Boehrer said. Borough firefighters, along with Eastern Salisbury firefighters and members of a Lehigh County special operations team, are evaluating the row homes to make sure they are structurally sound and safe for residents, he said.

Everyone who lives in homes directly affected by the collapse is accounted for and a preliminary search of rubble on the sidewalk confirmed that no pedestrians were trapped, Boehrer said. Residents forced to leave their homes were directed to nearby Fountain Hill Elementary School, where a temporary shelter was set up, he said.

Early on, at least, no one had opted to go to the shelter, he said. At 4:30 p.m., Boehrer said he was unsure when or whether residents would be allowed to go home.

This is Sabol's first winter on Seneca Street, but neighbor Mike Ferry has lived in the neighborhood for five years and can't recall any similar incidents. He noted, though, that this is the snowiest winter since he moved to the block.

Roof collapses keep crews busy throughout Lehigh Valley - February 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tuesday was a busy day for crews responding to collapses across the Lehigh Valley.

The porches of some homes on Seneca Street in Fountain Hill were no match for the heavy mounds of snow on top of them.

"This is our second call today that my department was on," said David Boehrer, the assistant fire chief. "We ended up sticking the cameras through to make sure that there was nobody trapped underneath."

    Nobody was injured.

Crews cleaned up the area and even took down another roof that was unstable.

"If you can get access, try to push the snow off cause we're getting rain tomorrow and it's going to even be worse," said Boehrer.

In Salisbury Township, the center of a roof gave way at Miller Brothers Garage on East Emaus Avenue.

Employees heard the roof buckle and everyone made it out safely.

Crews also responded to the 300 block of East Walnut Street in Allentown after a porch roof collapsed and fell on a gas meter. Nobody was injured.

And in the 900 block of Armour street in Allentown, a house's rear porch roof collapsed.

Glendale aldermen to consider porch, home size proposals - February 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GLENDALE Glendale aldermen agreed on Monday night to consider two zoning code changes, designed to address building trends and protect neighborhood aesthetics.

One proposal would allow front porches that do not encroach more than 10 feet into a home's set back area to be approved administratively, without a public hearing.

"We have requests for these porch additions, and they are almost always approved by the board of adjustment. We would be saving time, the costs of a stenographer and other things," Jaysen Christensen, city administrator, told aldermen Monday night. A proposal will be before aldermen in March.

The second would restrict the size of single-family homes to a smaller percentage of lot size, with an eye toward preserving the street scene to protect neighboring property values, especially where infill re-development is popular. Building height limitations may be added to account for ground slope. "A home may be built to please those who will live inside, but the neighbors have to live with it too," said Jeff Fernhoff, chair of the architectural review board and the planning and zoning commission. "We look to keep proposed homes quaint and sized appropriately."

Christensen said he will get more information, particularly from neighboring municipalities, before developing proposed legislation.

Aldermen have given tentative approval to a renewed fire protection service contract with Warson Woods, for the five-year period beginning April 1, but were awaiting approval by that city's board. The renewal would be priced at $263,000 annually with a cost of living adjustment each spring, beginning this year. Glendale has provided fire service to the neighboring city since 1948.
