BRITTONS NECK, SC (WMBF) - If your water completely stops flowing from the faucet, that's a sign your pipes are freezing. That pipe will either thaw when it gets warmer or break.
"My advice is you're just going to have to wait it out and wait until the water thaws back and then see if you have burst pipes or whether they just froze," said Marshall Hepler, owner of Hepler Plumbing.
It's difficult to pinpoint exactly where a pipe system has frozen and gotten backed up. Because of that, a plumber can't help until there's an actual leak in the system.
Signs of a leakage include the sound of water running under the house or flooding around wherever the pipe is that burst.
"You'll find the water real quick and if it's underneath the house, most of the time, you'll hear it or you'll have a loss of pressure in the system. Water shows up real quick," Hepler said.
Turning off the water supply as soon as you notice the pipe has frozen can reduce the chance of significant water damage if it breaks. If water is still coming out of the faucet, keep the faucet running to try to thaw it out.
A new piping material, called PEX, has decreased the chance of pipes bursting since it's use over the past decade. It's made of plastic and is more flexible.
"The new tubing has helped tremendously as far as the plumbing industry," Hepler said. "A lot of the pipes don't freeze like they used to."
Cost of repairs for a broken pipe can run between a service fee and thousands of dollars if the damage is extensive.
Taking preventative measures before it gets too cold outside, such as opening cabinets to expose pipes to heat, dripping water out of faucets and covering any holes that could expose piping to the outside air, are the key to keeping pipes from freezing.

A Henrico County apartment complex caught fire Friday evening after a plumber used a blowtorch to unfreeze water pipes, according to fire Capt. Daniel Rosenbaum.
Friday was the second consecutive day that a fire was caused in Henrico by a plumber using a blowtorch to unfreeze water pipes, according to fire officials.The fires were started by different plumbers, Rosenbaum said.

Henrico fire caused by plumber with a blowtorch
A journeyman plumber/gasfitter from Rocky Mountain House who showcased her culinary skills on national TV is preparing to open a restaurant.
Dora Cote, who cooked her way to an 11th-place finish on Season 1 of CTVs MasterChef Canada, expects Doras Rocky Mountain Roadhouse to be serving local diners next month.
Were just waiting on our kitchen equipment and then well be able to announce a grand opening.
Cote credits her MasterChef experience which involved competition against other contestants in front of three celebrity chefs for enabling her to become a restaurateur.
Without MasterChef I wouldnt be here, she said. Id still be plumbing.
Not only is she much faster and more creative than she was previously, the show validated her cooking skills and gave her the courage to try new and different things, said Cote.
It opened my eyes a lot, actually.
Her willingness to be adventurous around the stove is evident from Doras Rocky Mountain Roadhouses menu. Options will include chicken pot fries, which is Cotes answer to poutine, with pot pie filling and freshly baked pie shell crumbled over the cheese curds and fries; and mac and cheese Wellington, which substitutes homemade mac and cheese for the traditional beef.
The breakfast menu, which will be offered on weekends to start with and expanded to weekdays if demand warrants, will include eggs Benedict served on Yorkshire pudding, garlic potato duchess, prime rib au jus and asparagus; and french toast with peanut butter sauce and banana foster.
There will also be more contemporary choices, such as oven-baked ribs with homemade barbecue sauce and corn bread muffins, and fresh pies and cakes. And blackboard specials will be offered although nothing like the tired steak sandwich pitched at many restaurants.

A man who says he was left brain-damaged and blind in one eye after a phone rage row with a star of TV comedy, Shameless, is suing him for more than 300,000 in compensation.
Trainee plumber, Oliver Flint, suffered grave injuries after being thrown from the bonnet of a BMW driven by actor, Elliott Tittensor - who plays Carl Gallagher in the hit Channel 4 series - in the early hours of August 15 2010, the High Court heard.
The pair had clashed outside a McDonalds restaurant in Kentish Town, North London, after the 18-year-olds mobile phone battery ran out and he approached Mr Tittensor, who refused to let him borrow his own handset, said Mr Flints barrister, Andrew Roy.
Following the incident, Mr Tittensor, 25, of Heywood, Lancashire, who was out with his then girlfriend - Skins star, Kaya Scodelario, 22 - was fined 750 and given six penalty points by Highbury Magistrates.
He admitted driving without insurance, his policy having expired the previous month.
But Mr Flint, now 22, of Balmore Street, Archway, north London, now wants the actor to pay him six-figure damages for unlawful battery, claiming he attacked him with his car before fleeing the scene, leaving him badly injured.
Mr Tittensor denies any wrongdoing and says he was acting in lawful self-defence in order to evade the drunk and aggressive plumber who had mounted the bonnet of his car.
Mr Roy told Mr Justice Edis that the actor swore at Mr Flint after being asked to lend his phone for the second time.
When the plumber responded by swearing back and slamming his hand on the car bonnet, Mr Tittensor drove forward and hit Mr Flint with the front of his car, the barrister said.
That forced Mr Flint onto the bonnet, whereupon Mr Tittensor continued to drive forward whilst shaking the wheel to throw Mr Flint off the bonnet, and succeeding in throwing him violently and heavily to the ground, claimed Mr Roy.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Frozen, busted pipes might seem inevitable in this deep freeze, but a few simple steps could save you thousands in repairs.
David Champion was on his third call of the day Wednesday -- and it wasn't even lunchtime yet.
The problem?
"It's the only pipe up there that is exposed, and it's got a little crack in it -- just a little crack," described Champion.
It's a familiar tale for the staff at Tom Drexler Plumbing Air and Electric. Owner Tom Drexler says his company is averaging 300 calls a day during this deep chill.
"We have way more business than we could ever handle for probably a week," he said. "When the pipes freeze, it just freezes solid like an ice cube. Then the water expands, splitting the pipe."
He's offering four simple tips that homeowners can use right now to try and keep repair professionals away from their homes.First, seal off the vents for the crawlspaces at your house. You can use cardboard, insulation -- anything to keep the wind from whipping through.
Second, open you cabinets, especially if they're near outside walls.
"Allow heat from the house to get in underneath the cabinet and that in and of itself can prevent problems," Drexler said.
Next, leave a small drip running from the faucet.
