Samuel "Joe" Wurzelbacher, who was thrust into the political spotlight four years ago, was beaten in Tuesday's election by Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving Democratic woman in the House.

Wurzelbacher ran as a Republican in Ohio's 9th U.S. House district in his first shot at public office.

He became an overnight sensation during the 2008 presidential campaign after questioning then-candidate Barack Obama about his economic policies and being repeatedly cited by Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain in a presidential debate.

His sudden fame turned him into a sought-after voice for many anti-establishment conservatives, and he traveled the country speaking at tea party rallies and conservative gatherings.

But he faced an uphill battle against Kaptur in a district stretching from Toledo to Cleveland that is heavily tilted toward Democrats.

Wurzelbacher said he decide to run because he has seen too many people forced out of their homes and driven to leave Ohio because of the poor economy.

Republicans recruited him to run and thought his fame would help bring in enough money to mount a serious challenge. But his fundraising struggled and he ran a low-key campaign that got little attention.

He also drew criticism for remarks he made along the way.

At a fundraising stop in Arizona, he suggested that the United States needs to build a fence at the Mexico border and "start shooting" at suspected illegal immigrants.

The head of the National Jewish Democratic Council criticized Wurzelbacher over a campaign video in which he suggested that Nazi gun controls contributed to deaths during the Holocaust because Jews didn't have firearms to defend themselves. He defended his statements, saying that he did not say that gun control caused the Holocaust.

Kaptur defeats 'Joe the Plumber'

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A plumber and a worker, both Bangladeshis, who allegedly exploited a woman masseuse and made her give 'shady' massage to men for free, were charged with human trafficking on Tuesday in the Court of First Instance.

The alleged victim, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi woman, told the investigating prosecutor that she had come to Dubai to work in a massage centre for Dh1,300 a month.

The plumber (36) and the worker (28) picked her up from the Dubai International Airport in April and took her to a flat in Rafaa. They took away her passport and visit visa and the following day she began her work at a massage centre in Bur Dubai.

She gave full-body massage sessions to Asian men for a few months and was not paid any salary or tips. She then realised that what she was doing was illegal and stopped going to work.

The woman asked the defendants to return her passport so that she could go for the required medical tests for her residence visa. But the accused beat her and held her captive in a room for four days.

One night, she was surprised to find the plumber sleeping naked by her side and he later allegedly raped her.

On resuming her services at the massage centre, she, one day, sought the help of an Emirati man by calling out to him from the window of the centre. The same day the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers raided the flat and arrested the pair and the women who were working willingly as prostitutes and illegal masseuses.

A police sergeant said that they raided the defendant's flat where they found the victim with two other women.

The victim showed them her injured arm and said that she was being forced into prostitution. She told the police the accused were in the gym located at the top of the building and the police arrested them. The police also seized many copies of visas and passports of Asian girls from the accused.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Joe the Plumber has lost his bid for a U.S. House seat in Ohios 9th District, Fox News projects.

Democrat incumbent Marcy Kaptur beat the Republican, whose formal name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher.

This was Wurzelbachers first shot at public office.

In the end, he lost out to the longest-serving Democratic woman in the House, Kaptur, who handily defeated fellow Democrat Dennis Kucinich in a primary earlier this year.
