Plumber, wife charged in McDonald's bathroom thefts - February 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A plumber and his wife have been charged in the theft of toilet flush valves from area McDonald's restaurants.

Patrick Ring, 45, and Dianna Rodriguez, 41, were arrested on Feb. 6 after police nabbed them while they were allegedly stealing metal, jail records show. The couple was arrested hours after the San Antonio Police Department released an description of their Chevrolet Lumina and surveillance images of the couple inside a McDonald's restaurant.

In a videotaped confession, they later said that they entered a McDonald's restaurant at the 3400 block of East Southcross on Dec.11 to steal flush valves from the bathrooms, according to their arrest warrant affidavits. They said they had done the same at five other McDonald's locations.

The stolen flush valves were sold to a recycling company located on Culebra Road, the affidavit said. The metal made to complete the valve is brass, which is considered a precious metal.

They told officers they stole flush valves from five other restaurants around the city, though they have only been charged in connection with two thefts.

They remain behind bars charged with two state jail felony counts of theft of aluminum/bronze/copper and other unrelated charges.

Pittsburgh Plumber Mr Rooter's Bathroom How To Series: Installing A Pedestal Sink - February 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mr Rooter Tip Of The Day: If replacing a base cabinet with a pedestal sink, most likely you will have significant work to do to improve your bathroom flooring, baseboard, and wall. In most cases, these areas will be downright ugly and in the worst-case scenario, flooring and baseboards may not even exist.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

On the downside, when you install a pedestal sink, youll generally lose storage space, says the most referred Pittsburgh plumber. A pedestal sink is more complicated to install than it looks: You need to remove the wall covering to install a cleat to support the sink. According to Beall, a pedestal sink is basically a wall-mount sink. All the pedestal does, says Mr Rooter, is partially obscure the waste line and trap and look good.

Contrary to the beauty shots in plumbing catalogs, most pedestal sinks do not eliminate having to look at plumbing lines. (The catalog shots are photographed in a studio; the fixtures are never hooked up.) The supply lines on a pedestal sink thats actually installed are connected to shut-off valves typically located on both exterior sides of the pedestal theyre often highly visible, hard to keep clean and become a very costly feature so they are aesthetically appealing to the homeowner.

Mr Rooter Tip Of The Day

Tip #1 If the old sink wasnt wall-mounted, it will be necessary to remove the wall covering, install a cleat, and replace the wall covering. This method is referred to as notching the studs, and directions will come with the pedestal sink unit detailing where to locate the cleat. Measure up the recommended distance and cut partially through the wall studs. Then knock out the waste with a hammer and clean up the notches with a chisel as needed,.

Tip #2 Cut a brace (typically a 26 or 28) to fit between the studs. Attach the brace securely to the wall studs with nails or, better yet, screws. TRADE SECRET: In some cases, it will be necessary to re-plumb the supply and waste lines before replacing the wall covering.

Tip #3 With the brace in place, reinstall the wall covering. Measure carefully and cut a piece of drywall to fit. Measure and lay out holes for the supply and waste lines, and cut these with a drywall saw or hole saw. Position the drywall on the wall and secure to the studs with drywall screws or nails.

Tip #4 Locate the centerline of the sink. Then use a framing square to transfer the centerline onto the floor where the pedestal will stand.

Tip #5 Now carefully set the pedestal on the floor the recommended distance from the wall so its centered on the centerline that was marked on the floor.

Plumber: Keep food safety in mind in selecting faucets, sinks - February 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Q: I recently read your column about a homeowner asking about a small faucet for a prep sink that would use cold water only. As a food professional, I'd advise that food-prep sinks should always include hot water as well, for general cleanup and for washing hands. I believe hands and the sink need to be washed every time you handle raw food products. More people need to be aware of food-preparation safety. Please advise your readers on this important topic.

    - Chef, Washington

A: Thanks, Chef. I agree with your professional advice and wanted to spread your message about food safety. The sink we referred to in the original question was a small secondary sink, not the primary kitchen sink. It might have been better to describe it as a staging sink since its main use would be to prep beverages. I appreciate your message so we could get into better details on this topic.

I'll go a step further and suggest installing the new "touchless" kitchen faucets, which allow you to handle raw food products without touching and contaminating faucet handles.

Once again, Chef, thanks for cooking up a great tip and taking the time to send it in!

Tampa Plumber Gennaro Plumbing Offers Solutions to Common Spring Plumbing Issues - February 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

With the Spring season around the corner, Tampa plumbing company Gennaro Plumbing (http://www.GennaroPlumbingTampa.com) is offering homeowners a variety of solutions to common spring plumbing issues, including some DIY advice for Tampa Bay homeowners to help prevent issues and save money.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

Master Plumber Anthony Gennaro, of Tampas Gennaro Plumbing, offers visitors to his website blog a few plumbing tips that could extend the life of a homes pipes in the coming years. Anthony obtained his Certified Master Plumbers License in 2000, which made him the youngest person in the state of Florida to hold this status. His commitment to the familys business has given him a plethora of knowledge regarding plumbing repair.

A lot of people dont know that there are quite a few ways to maintain the health of your plumbing, says Anthony Gennaro, a few small things here and there go a long way.

Tampa Bay area home owners can take advantage of the following tips and tricks from Master Plumber Anthony Gennaro:

Even after a mild Tampa winter, its important to do simple checks on a houses plumbing system to make sure everything is in order. A visual look over can be done very quickly, but can prevent a catastrophe from sneaking up. Look over any piping for cracks or rusting, which can be a telltale sign of leaks at crucial connection points. Once identified, a careful application of plumbers tape can provide a leak-proof seal.

Check bathroom and kitchen faucets for any leaking or dripping. A slowly dripping faucet could easily be fixed by changing its gasket, which is a simple project for any homeowner. Toilets can also be leaky, but are harder to diagnose. Tampa plumber Anthony Gennaro suggests putting a few drops of food dye in the tank to see where the leaking is occurring. Minimizing leaks and drips around the house can save on water bill costs.

Unscrew the strainers on the underside of faucets to make sure there isnt any debris that has been blocking it up. This is especially important for showerheads, since they tend to be a target for mineral deposits. You can soak the showerheads in vinegar overnight if they get jammed up. Afterwards, use an old toothbrush to clear the waterways, suggests Anthony.

Habitual drain cleaning is also very important. Floor drains are another area of home plumbing that can be easily maintained by a homeowner. Pouring water into floor drains can determine if there is a blockage thats inhibiting draining. This can then be remedied by using a common pipe snake to remove the debris that is blocking the waterway. Its important to do this to ensure that drains will work properly in a flooding scenario. Additionally, testing unused drains will fill the traps that prevent odors from spreading into the home.

While these tips will come in handy for anyone with a Do-It-Yourself attitude, its important to know when to call in a professional plumber. Mr. Gennaro says, there are many times where I have had to come in and fix a problem that couldve been easily prevented. On the flip side, there have been cases where I have had to fix something a customer did while trying to fix something else. Some plumbing jobs can be too unwieldy to take on with limited knowledge. Thats when an expert should be called.
