It has been reported in News and Star that tests carried out on wards at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle revealed there to be pseudomonas aeruginosa present in wards including in the intensive care and special care baby units. The opportunist pathogens are known to cause infection in people with weakened immune systems. It also frequently occurs in the last 2 metres of water piping from a tap or water outlet. The tests are believed to have been carried out by an external contractor.
