Plumber Hicks signs for Phoenix -

Jason Hicks was today coming to terms with the fact that he was no longer a plumber and would be plying his trade as a professional footballer for the next two years at least.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who was born in the English county of Kent and came through the ranks in New Zealand with East Coast Bays, Waikato and Auckland City, has landed a two-year contract with the Wellington Phoenix.
"It has all happened very quickly; one minute I was working as a plumber and a week later I am a pro footballer," Hicks said.
"Like many kids I always wanted to be a pro but never expected it to happen the way, or at the speed, it did."
After playing at under-17, under-20 and Olympic level for New Zealand, Hicks made his senior debut for the All Whites "A" team that took on the Wellington Phoenix in Rotorua last month.
Hicks played well enough in that game for Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick to invite him to trial with the Phoenix.
Again he did well enough to be signed as an injury replacement for Louis Fenton for the opening rounds of the Hyundai A-League.
In the Phoenix first two games against Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers Hicks was used as a substitute and again Merrick was impressed enough with the way he handled himself in a white hot atmosphere that he offered him a two-year deal.
"Jason is a very good young player who has played for New Zealand at all junior levels and was very impressive against us in Rotorua," Merrick said.
"While he was trialling with us we had the opportunity to play him in our first two competitive A-League games and he didnt look out of place.

GRIFFITH Base Hospital (GBH) farewelled one of its long-standing employees, when assistant engineer Robert Hallam retired after more than 26 years on the job last month.
In 1987, Robert began his employment as a plumber with the construction crew completing renovations at Hillston Hospital.
Twelve months later, he was transferred to GBH as the area plumber with responsibility for outlying hospitals such as Leeton, Narrandera, Hay, Hillston and Lake Cargelligo.
On the retirement of the previous assistant engineer in 2009, Mr Hallam was the successful replacement and has been at the helm of the maintenance team until his retirement on Friday, September 20.
This position carried many responsibilities around the day-to-day running of the hospital including travelling to outlying centres two to three times a week.
Griffith Base Hospital manager of business operations Ian Woolfe said during the past 12 years, Mr Hallam was on call 24/7 every three weeks and there were times when family had to come second because a breakdown in a hospital could not wait.
Making the decision to retire was a long and calculated one, but now it has been made, Robert is looking forward to spending quality time with his wife and two sons and undertaking some quiet, mid-week fishing and some serious time in the kitchen two of Roberts passions, he said.
Wife Robyn, who also works at GBH, will continue to work part time for a little while yet and can enjoy going home to a lovely cooked meal.
GBH staff farewelled Mr Hallam at a morning tea where he was presented with a certificate of service.

Dear Ed: We're saving up for a nice little bathroom remodeling job and will be on a strict budget. The job will include replacing our old bathroom sink and faucet. We have a standard faucet, but because we're installing a completely new sink and vanity we would like to put in a wall-mounted faucet. Will that be more expensive than putting in a regular faucet that just mounts on the sink? Joe, Ohio
Dear Joe: Wall-mounted faucets can be a good choice for new construction. Like the name says, wall-mounted bathroom faucets mount on the wall behind the sink and typically are installed on raised "vessel" sinks, or under-counter mounted bathroom sinks.
They provide a trendy look and can make it easier to clean the sink or counter because the entire faucet is raised off the deck. However, you may have noticed that I used the phrase "new construction." That can be the key for choosing a wall-mounted faucet.
With new construction or a complete bathroom demo job, the walls are opened up and the extra work needed to pipe in a wall-hung faucet usually can be kept under control. If you did not plan on opening up the wall behind the sink, this type of faucet could add significant costs to your job. Bottom line: If you really want a sleek, wall-mounted faucet, you may need to raise the ceiling on your bathroom remodeling budget.

Plumber for trial over gas deaths -

A 52-year-old Londonderry plumber has been committed for trial in the Crown Court accused of causing the death of two teenagers three years ago.
The judge, sitting in Coleraine, said he was satisfied there was a prima facie case against George Brown.
Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both 18, died in August 2010 when there was a gas leak in their holiday apartment in Castlerock, County Londonderry.
Mr Brown, of Ballygawley Road, Aghadowey, was granted continuing bail.
Mr Brown, is accused of the manslaughter of the two friends.
The judge said he was "well aware of the nature of the tragedy" that had befallen the teenagers' families but that his duty was not to perform a "dry run" of a trial but to decide if Mr Brown had a case to answer.
"Two young men died from carbon monoxide poisoning," the judge said.
"The source of that carbon monoxide was from an incorrectly-fitted flue which had dislocated at the elbow joint.
"That flue was part and parcel of the boiler installation which the apartment owner had arranged with the defendant whose fingerprints were found on one section of it."
