Three years ago, Adam Christensen was working as a plumber in Las Vegas when he decided to join the U.S. Army.
He signed up out of a desire to be part of something larger and a dream to become a Special Forces member. Today, the UNLV graduate has risen to the rank of specialist and has been named the U.S. Army Soldier of the Year for winning the Armys annual Best Warrior competition Nov. 19-22 at Fort Lee, Va.
Christensen, who is a military policeman stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, defeated 12 other soldiers from across the country in a competition of military skills and knowledge to win the honor. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno and Sgt. Maj. Ray Chandler recognized Christensen in a ceremony Wednesday at the Pentagon.
The Sun caught up with Christensen, 29, to ask him about the honor and what it took to be named Soldier of the Year. Here is what he had to say:
What did you go through to train for something like this?
The competition is the full spectrum of what you do in the Army. Wed shoot, practice disassembling and reassembling weapons. Wed practice reacting to chemical content. Just the basic soldier skills over and over and over again, and studying.

Bill Howe Plumbing is no stranger to giving back to the community. The company has teamed up with the American Heart Association for the past three years, and in 2013 has added the San Diego Burn Institute to its roster of organizations benefitting from heir "pay-it-forward" spirit. A true family-owned and operated business, Bill Howe Plumbing places great importance on giving back and the local San Diego plumber was happy to participate in "Giving Tuesday" this year to help some of their favorite organizations.
The nationwide movement, "Giving Tuesday," followed on the heels of "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday." During a time of year synonymous with spending and present giving, it is important to also highlight and engage in giving back to the community and helping those in need. On December 3, 2013, "Giving Tuesday" made its mark across retailers, social media and local businesses, giving people the opportunity to support the charitable spirit of the holiday season.
"Giving Tuesday" was a great opportunity for us to do our part," said Tina Howe, Vice President of the San Diego heating, plumbing and restoration company. "We have a great customer following on our own social media platforms and we wanted to help engage them in the spirit, so we offered to donate $1 for each service call performed on that day."
Not only did the San Diego plumber donate $1 for each service call to one organization, they added a secondary organization to double their efforts. At the end of the day, Bill Howe Plumbing performed 174 service calls that equated to a donation of $174 to the American Heart Association and an additional $174 donation to the San Diego Burn Institute.
This is not the first time the Bill Howe Family of Companies has utilized their social media to raise money for organizations near to their own heart. On December 6, they participated in the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station Radiothon, which raised over $300,000 dollars, and their own Initiative during October raising $259 for breast cancer research, which they donated in honor of one of their own employees mothers, a breast cancer survivor.

Self-improvement is generally measured in small victories, like losing that last couple of pounds, quitting smoking or enrolling in a college course.
Army Spc. Adam Christensen, the new soldier of the year in the Armys Best Warrior Competition at Fort Lee, Va., has never been one for small victories.
Three years ago, Christensen spent his days under a kitchen sink, turning wrenches and unclogging drains. But he longed to be a part of something bigger; he wanted to serve his country and, most importantly, provide a better life for his family. So the plumber from Smithfield, Utah, joined the Army.
It wasnt smooth sailing at first. He failed his first physical fitness assessment with his recruiter, which would have helped him advance prior to boot camp. But the defeat only made him work harder. By the end of boot camp, he was getting the highest marks possible.
That drive, discipline and laser-sharp focus has only picked up steam. In late November, the 29-year-old military policeman beat out the Armys best from every major command in a series of events that tested both physical and mental prowess.
When he called to tell his wife he had won the prestigious competition as the Armys top enlisted warrior, she was speechless and began to cry, Christensen said this week after returning to his Arctic Titans at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
His commanding officers at the 472nd Military Police Company were not quite as surprised.
I was confident he was going to do well, 1st Lt. Stephen Stosberg said of Christensen.
Stosberg said that being a bit older and coming from the blue-collar workforce instilled in Christensen a work ethic, drive to improve and maturity not seen in every soldier. He was made team leader in his platoon as a private.
He knows what he needs to do to be successful, Stosberg said. He constantly seeks self-improvement.

Steve Lavin has a number of nicknames for SirDominic Pointer, St. Johns rugged, athletically gifted and versatile sixth man.
Batman, Plumber, WD-40, Basketball Renaissance Man, Costco, are among them.
Heres another: X-Factor.
When Pointer plays well the Red Storm won seven of the 10 games he reached double figures in scoring last year St. Johns often wins.
If you go back the last three years, hes been the catalyst thats spearheaded every big rally, every big win, and usually put the exclamation point on a victory or is the one to put the final nail in the coffin, Lavin said of Pointer, who is coming off his best performance of the season, a brilliant 12-point, 11-assist, nine-rebound, four-steal, three-block effort in Saturdays 104-58 rout of improved Fordham. We call him our Batman, because hes saved the day, hes saved Gotham City so many times.
Lavin felt the 6-foot-5 Pointer, a Detroit product, would be a special player his freshman year, after the 6-foot-5 forward single-handedly shut down Lehigh star C.J. McCollum in his second college game, igniting a big comeback. Lehigh and McCollum would reach the Sweet 16 that year, upsetting Duke in the first round.
Dom came in a like a plumber and shut the water off, Lavin said.
Pointer will be of particular importance in Sundays noon showdown against No. 2 and undefeated Syracuse, when he will likely see plenty of time guarding Orange senior star C.J. Fair, the ACC preseason Player of the Year. When the teams met last season, Pointer drew point guard Michael Carter-Williams, who now is thriving in the NBA with the 76ers.
[Pointer is] just one of those unique players that has the ability to harass or disrupt, discombobulate opponents with his foot speed, his length, his physicality, his ability to anticipate, and just his tenacity he brings to the court, Lavin said.
The 6-foot-8 Fair is averaging 17.8 points per game and is dynamic for a player his size, a southpaw with 3-point range who can handle the ball and facilitate. Pointer is looking forward to matching up against Fair on Sunday, though Lavin made it clear he will give Fair plenty of different looks.
