Could this be the summer of Summers? -

Auckland plumber Tony Summers was fully tapped-out on Boxing Day.
The 40-year-old Yamaha ace convincingly won both Formula Two (600cc) class races at the famous Cemetery Circuit motorcycle race meeting on Thursday, the traditional day-after-Christmas event on the public streets of Wanganui, a stand-alone event but also the third and final round of the annual Suzuki Series.
His brace of wins in the tightly-fought class was easily enough for him to secure the F2 Suzuki Series crown, the first time the Manukau man had won a major trophy in the 600cc class but coming in just his second season of contesting the class.
"Ive won the Suzuki Series in the Super Moto class in the past, but this is a bigger deal and its a first for me," said Summers.
Summers won four out of six F2 races in the Suzuki Series, only beaten across the line once by Wanganuis Jayden Carrick (in race two at the Hampton Downs series opener a fortnight ago) and once by visiting German Yamaha ace Thomas Kreutz (in race two at Manfeild a week ago).
Summers also raced a Yamaha YZ450F throughout the series and had also been a contender to win the Super Moto class again this season, until a crash at Manfeilds second round ruined his chances of outright victory.
Summers did, however, manage to turn the heat on the eventual winner of the Super Moto class, Wanganui rider Richard Dibben, twice finishing a close runner-up to Dibben at Wanganui on Boxing Day.
"Winning the 600cc class is a big one. Its a great way to set me up for the nationals when I will race the 600cc supersport class."
The four-round New Zealand Superbike Championships kick off in Christchurch in a weeks time, on January 5, and perhaps it could really be a summer of Summers.
"Im not getting too excited about things just yet," he said. "I dont know any of the South Island tracks. I have never even set eyes on the tarmac down there yet, so its going to be a bit of a learning experience for me.

Police Rescue Caruso the Cat -
December 26, 2013 by
Mr HomeBuilder
I'd bought the house in August of 2000, and in October, the shower faucet went bad. I hired a young plumber who came and spent pretty much all day going in and out of my house. In retrospect, I am not sure he completely knew what he was doing. It cost too much, and at the end of the day, I was missing Caruso, the oldest cat, who was shy around people he didn't know.
I had spent a couple of hours after the plumber and his buddy had left putting up new towel rods in the main bathroom where the repairs had been made. Another of my cats, a street cat I had adopted, named Queen, had been acting foolish, coming into the bathroom, caterwauling, and doing somersaults by the tub. I thought she just wanted attention.
A few hours later, I realized with a gasp that I had not seen Caruso for several hours. I called a friend and hysterically told her I thought Caruso had gotten out of the house and had tried to get back to the old neighborhood. She and her husband came and helped me go through the alleys at the old house. No Caruso was to be found anywhere.
I was tearful when I went home and laid down on my back on my bed. I kept going through the events of the day, and thought about Queen's behavior. I got up, went back to that bathroom, and knelt on the floor next to the tub and cabinet, where Queen had been acting ditzy.
"Caruso?" I said. I heard a faint "meow," from inside the wall. Caruso had been locked in the bathtub wall when the plumber's access had been sealed up earlier in the day. Queen had been trying to tell me. I just wasn't smart enough to understand her antics. By then, he had been walled up for about eight hours, and it was midnight.
The plumber's access was inside of a cabinet, under the sink, but recessed back about three feet. I am a big girl, and the doors into the cabinet were each only about a foot across. Even if I got in, chances were I would never have been able to get back out.
I dialed the dispatch number for the city police and explained my problem. I said, "Could you send out a small police officer to crawl in there, unscrew the plumber's access, and help me get my cat out of the wall?"
She was silent for almost a full minute. I suspect she was trying to not laugh. "I'll see if they do that," she said, "and then I will call you back."
A few minutes later, she called and said an officer was on the way. He was a small cop, for sure, and he was carrying a hammer, screwdriver and flashlight, along with his standard gear. I took him back to the bathroom, and showed him the door he would need to squeeze through.
The door opening was so tight, that he had to remove his service weapon and gun belt to get in through the cabinet door. He gave me an uncertain look. "I wouldn't know how to use it, officer," I told him. He crawled in, unscrewed the access, and shone the flashlight inside the tub walls.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -
Two Lake Charles men were arrested Sunday in connection with a Wednesday night shooting, city police said.
Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Damien Jermaine Royster, 22, and Thomas Demond Plumber, 21, have been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
Kraus said Royster and Plumber, along with an unidentified third suspect, attempted to rob another man at a home of North Franklin Street.
"The victim, who suffered several gunshot wounds, said he was home alone when three subjects knocked at his back door," Kraus said Monday in a news release.
"Once he opened the door, the three males pushed their way in and began to batter him in an attempt to rob him. The victim said he was able to fight them off when two of the suspects fled while one suspect shot several rounds at him while exiting," Kraus said.
Kraus said after a follow-up investigation, officers obtained arrest warrants for Royster and Plumber.
Royster was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Judge Michael Canaday set Royster's bond at $900,000, while Plumber's bond was set at $260,000.
Another man was arrested at the scene Wednesday night on charges unrelated to the shooting. Kraus said Catlin Isaiah January was charged with two counts of cocaine possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,000.
KPLC will have more on later editions.
