Jan. 23 (UPI) -- An Irish plumber working in Louisville decided to test his luck by knocking on the door of boxing legend Muhammad Ali last Friday.

To Tony Kellys surprise, not only did he get to meet "The Greatest," he also got to wish Ali a happy 72nd birthday.

"I was working at a house. It was just a normal day at work and guys were joking around with me telling me how Muhammad Ali lived next door and I didn't really believe them at the start," Kelly said. "Mr. Ali's wife, Yolanda, answered the door and I explained to her I was a fan from Ireland and she said Muhammad would love to meet an Irish fan. He was unavailable, but she told me to come back in an hour's time."

Kelly moved to Louisville after marrying his wife in November 2012.

"He was just sitting there. I was star struck. It was just great to meet him. I shook his hand. He posed for a couple pictures with me. It's very cool," Kelly said. "Just everything about him, his attitude and way it changed the sport. The guy is a legend and all the work he's done for humanity as well."

After posting a photo of himself and Ali on his Facebook page, the picture went viral thanks to Kellys friends in Ireland. "I didn't think much of it. I didn't think it would actually catch on the way it did," he said.

Following the once-in-a-lifetime meeting, Kelly said he "was over the moon."

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Call it the luck of the Irish. Plumber Tony Kelly has only been in America for 14 months, but he's already met his hero, Muhammad Ali.

I was really star struck, I didn't know what to say, he's just a legend, Kelly said.

How did he do it? He knocked and the door was answered.

This past Friday, Kelly went to work on a home in Prospect.

It was an everyday job. The guys were telling me that Ali lived next door and I didn't really believe them at the start, he said.

Kelly thought there was no way he was working next door to Ali.

As the day went on, they kept mentioning it, so I decided I'd chance my luck and go over and see if I could get a picture or an autograph or something, he said.

The Irish Independent has a wonderful account of Kelly's surprise audience with Ali, who on Friday celebrated his 72nd birthday.

According to the Independent, Kelly moved to Louisville, where Ali lives, after marrying his wife, Megan, in November 2012.

On Friday, Kelly went out to a home to repair a set of burst pipes. Some of his colleagues told him that Ali lived across the street. Kelly was skeptical, but he also is a big fan of Ali's and so he went over and knocked on the door. Ali's wife, Lonnie, answered.

We were working last Friday and some of my workmates said that Muhammad Ali in the house across the street. I thought it was a wind-up so I decided to call their bluff.

I knocked on the door and Ali's wife Yolanda answered and I just asked would it be possible for one of his greatest fans from Ireland to meet him.

She said 'Of course' and invited me in and there he was (Ali) sitting in the living room.

Kelly had a brief visit with Ali and wound up having Ali's wife take a photo of him with the champ.

Kelly told the paper that he "was over the moon," and that the Alis "were so pleasant."

Kelly wound up with the last laugh when he went back to the shop and showed his colleagues of his photo with Ali, who was born and raised in Louisville.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but hopefully, Kelly's good fortune isn't going to lead to a parade of photo seekers heading to Ali's front door.

Braving bitter temperatures, crews worked for hours to repair a valve under the roadway just outside of the Red Cross in Cambridge overnight.

Single-digit temperatures can mean big problems in cities and towns, but they can also cause big issues in your own home.

Experts are urging homeowners to be proactive so as to avoid plumbing problems.

This is up there. Its not the busiest, but its the busiest in years, said Anthony Farese of Maguire Plumbing.

Maguire Plumbing of Newton is fielding dozens of calls each weekend because of the cold snap. Problems include no heat, frozen pipes and broken pipes.

Nobody keeps their thermostat at 72 but this time of year its good to keep that hot water circulating through your pipes, said Farese.

Plumbers say insulating your pipes may not be the best solution.

All insulation has an R factor, it has a resistance factor. It doesnt make it frost proof, said Farese.

"Mr. Ali's wife, Yolanda, answered the door andI explained to herI was a fan from Ireland and she said Muhammad would love to meet an Irish fan," Kelly said. "He was unavailable, but she told me to come back in an hour's time."

So when Kelly returned to the house, the visit with "The Greatest" was more than he ever expected -- he didn't realize it was also Ali's 72nd birthday.

"He was just sitting there.I was star struck. It was just great to meet him.I shook his hand. Heposed for a couple pictures with me. It's very cool," Kelly said.

And once Kelly posteda picture of the two of them on his Facebook page, his friends in Ireland starting sharing it and Kelly says the picture went viral.

"I didn't think much of it.I didn't think it would actually catch on the way it did," Kelly remarked.

Kelly is back at work installing plumbing in a basement renovation, but he'll never forget his encounter with the boxing legend.

"Just everything about him, his attitude and way it changed the sport. The guy is a legend and all the work he's done for humanity as well."

This weeks sustained cold isnt just putting pressure on residents: Plumbing throughout the region is also being taxed.

Weve gotten a bunch of calls for both burst pipes and frozen pipes, said Mike Dollendorf, owner of Roys Plumbing in the Town of Tonawanda.

Its what happens when the temperature gets this cold and frigid winds blow into the walls where theres exposed plumbing. Damage can be extensive and expensive.

Dollendorf offered a few helpful hints at avoiding frozen pipes during cold snaps like these:

Keep the temperature inside of your house warmer.

Run a trickle of water from the hot and cold spigots of fixtures, especially the one with the longest run from the main water supply.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to let warmer air circulate.

Remove outside hoses, shut off the water line to any outside faucets and then open it to drain any excess water.

If your pipes do freeze, Dollendorf advises shutting off the main water supply. If a pipe does burst, that limits the amount of water that can leak into the home.

Thawing frozen pipes should be done by supervising a shielded lit lightbulb, using a hair dryer or calling a licensed professional plumber with special equipment.
