Picture: Rourke Walsh Plumber RB Dessert found this rare camel registration tag while digging a trench in Wyndham.
A Kimberley plumber has unearthed a rare camel registration tag thought to be almost a century old, while digging a trench in Wyndham.
RB Dessert was having a normal day at work laying pipes at the Wyndham address when he saw what he initially thought was an old coin.
"I thought because we were in Wyndham it might have been an old coin or something but when we cleaned it all up it looked like a registration tag for a dog," he said.
Inscribed with the word camel on one side and the date 1915 Wyndham 10 on the other, Mr Dessert later discovered the tag was, in fact, for a camel and was a rare find.
"There are only about three tags known to have been found around here," he said. "I haven't really found that much before. I usually find a lot of marbles actually.
"I like collecting rocks and things so I am always on the lookout for stuff. Because I like old things, I'm just going to hang onto it for now."
South Australian Museum curator of anthropology Dr Philip Jones said the tags were not considered collectable and would have been "left to moulder away where they fell".
"It is a lucky strike that this one has turned up. There has been another one found in the same area that numbers 170, so in theory there are that many around, but they are rare."
Dr Jones said camels were in high demand for transporting goods in the North West more than a century ago but by 1920 their use had all but ceased.
Plumber ad concerns couple whose child died following toilet mishap

UPDATE (03/19/2014): This story now includes the statement from Any Hour Services.
OREM A Utah family is upset by an ad that they claim is insensitive, and they want to warn parents about the hidden danger that lurks for their small children in bathrooms.
The ad from Any Hour Services has been circulating in mailers, and features a toddler next to a toilet and holding a rubber ducky. The slogan says: No job too small, we fix it all.
Vince and Lark Martinez said Tuesday the ad hits too close to home and the death of their son.
In 1994, their then-14-month-old son Tregory leaned over the toilet bowl too far, fell in and couldnt pull himself out. He suffered massive brain damage, and after a long fight for his life, ultimately died.
This just came as complete devastation, Lark Martinez said. We had to hop the baby gate with him, because thats just how safety conscious we are.
Vince Martinez said it was one safety measure they had simply overlooked.

Fixing leaks and updating old appliances can save water and money as Californians brace for the worst of the ongoing drought.
In some water districts, customers are being asked to cut their water usage in half.
Watch report:Water saving ideas
By updating old appliances and fixing small leaks, Beutler Plumbing service manager Neil Chapman says customers can see big savings.
"A big item to check is if the toilet leaks," Chapman said.
He calls them the silent leakers.
"You dont always hear them leaking, and a small toilet leak can waste up to 20 gallons of water a day. A good way to check is a little food coloring in the tank. If it runs through to the bowl then you have a leak," Chapman said.
Installing low-flow toilets is another way to save water in the bathroom.
At 1.28 gallons per flush, they use less than half the water of older models.
Chapman says many water districts offer rebates to customers making the switch.
