Signs coming down seem to mark changing times in the city.
Building residents watched as the iconic neon tap visible from Route 18 was being taken down Friday morning.
"It's kind of retro and iconic," said Ken Dickinson, 67, who lives on the top floor of the building. "I've always loved it. I never realized it would be moved."
He said the blue and red lights from the sign illuminate his patio at night, which is "kind of unique."
"I always tell people I live where the faucet is," he said.
The faucet marked the Plumbers' Supply Co. and remained on the building after the company moved to 700 Acushnet Ave. in 1979 and the Plumber's Landing Association was formed to find a reuse for the building.
"It's been up over 50 years," said John Lemiux from Poyant Signs, who went up in a crane to first remove the neon fixtures. He estimated the process would take about three hours.
