ABC Jason Wayne Walker was fined for installing dangerous gas fittings.

A West Australian plumber who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he installed dangerous gas fittings has apologised for his potentially deadly actions.

Jason Wayne Walker failed to ensure gas fittings complied with regulations and were gas-tight at two Bunbury properties and a Donnybrook house in June 2013.

Walker pleaded guilty to 13 offences, telling Bunbury Magistrates Court he was bingeing on drugs and alcohol at the time.

"I didn't know what I was doing half the time, I was too out of it," he told the court.

Although each of the offences carried a fine of up $50,000, Magistrate Dianne Scaddan said Walker would be fined $4,600 because he had undertaken six months of alcohol and drug rehabilitation, and had already been penalised by the State Administrative Tribunal.

The court heard Walker did not pressure-test pipes when he installed hot water systems, which caused them to spilt - resulting in gas leaking into homes.

State prosecutor Jasmine Rhodes said the familyat one Bunbury property only realised something was wrong when they smelt gas later in the evening.

She also said Walker fitted a stovetop in a Donnybrook home with LPG gas instead of natural gas as the label "clearly" indicated.

LPG gas has twice the energy of natural gas and posed a significant risk to the homeowners, the court was told.

Lots of products promise to clear your pipes without having to call a plumber. But even though they contain harsh chemicals, Consumer Reports tests have shown most arent that effective.

Now Consumer Reports has just tested a mechanical device that attaches to your faucet and uses pressurized water to clean your pipes. Its called Drain FX. It claims its effective at clearing all kinds of clogs with no tools, no chemicals, no mess and no need to call the plumber. Besides the $20 version for sinks, Drain-FX has a Plus version for bathtubs and showers. It comes with a 15-foot hose extension and a special valve.

To test how well Drain FX works, Consumer Reports clogged pipes with things like fat, sand and human hair. Drain-FX worked pretty well. It cleared everything completely, except it only partially removed the clump of hair.

You do need to have a faucet that has to have a removable aerator, which most do. But if your drain has small openings, you may have to take it apart to get the tube down the drain.

As a comparison, Consumer Reports also tried a $3 traditional plunger. It worked too, but took longer and required more effort.

Something's missing in the small town of Jackman, Maine. They've have an electrician and some carpenters among their 800-odd residents, but no plumber which can complicate things.

If a pipe bursts or a toilet backs up, many of us might not give a second thought to looking up a plumber. In most areas, there will be lots of options for services nearby.

But in the isolated town of Jackman, Maine, which has a population of around 800, the local plumber recently retired. Now, the closest plumber is in the nearest town 50 miles away.

To fill the void, one family has partnered with the local school district to create a scholarship. The 2015 Inza and Harry Hughey Memorial Scholarship will award $2,000 to a local graduate willing to become a certified plumber and come back to work in the town.

Sheryl and Larry Harth run the scholarship fund and decided to focus it on plumbing once the void hit them acutely. They moved back to the area about two years ago and built a house, hiring a plumber who lived in that town about 50 miles away to work on the project. Last year, they needed more work done and they were promised that that plumber would return.

"Well, it's been two years and we still have not seen that person," Larry Harth tells NPR's Arun Rath.

We have a great electrician and many carpenters, but we do not have a licensed plumber ... We're hoping that this will entice them.

He says there are some folks in town who know the basics of plumbing, but they're not licensed. In emergency situations, they can only provide guidance.
