Bait now to control Medflies -
September 18, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
DAFWA research officer Touhidur Rahman monitors Medfly numbers in fallen fruit.
The Department of Agriculture and Food WA is urging commercial fruit growers to bait for Mediterranean fruit flies to limit a population surge during the summer.
DAFWA is also extending the message to the community to ensure the flies are controlled in backyard trees.
DAFWA senior research officer Sonya Broughton said Mediterranean fruit flies had started to emerge this month, indicating a much higher population now than at the same time last year.
Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) is a serious horticultural pest which attacks a range of cultivated fruits and some fruiting vegetables in WA.
Dr Broughton said when deciduous stone fruit and some fruit trees were bare of leaves, the flies sheltered in citrus and other evergreen trees to await warmer weather.
"In order to lay her eggs after mating, if few hosts are available, the female Medfly will sting hard green fruit," she said.
"The first sign of damage is often larvae-infested or 'stung' fruit caused by the female laying eggs in the ripe or unripe fruit."
Dr Broughton advised growers to begin foliage baiting citrus and evergreens in orchards as soon as possible to help control the flies while numbers were low.
"Backyard lemon trees, loquats and early stone fruit should be included in the baiting program," she said.

Abu Dhabi: Lack of awareness about the dangers of a pesticide popularly known as bomb leads to its illegal use that risks poisoning and death, a senior official told Gulf News on Sunday.
Many people still are not aware of the dangers of banned aluminium phosphide [known as bomb for its severity] and accept offers from illegal pest control operators to use it in residential units, Engineer Othaibah Alqaydi, Director of Chemicals Department at the Ministry of Environment and Water, said.
People should be careful as some illegal operators convince ignorant people that it [aluminium phosphide] is the cheapest and best solution to eradicate all insects and pests from residential and commercial buildings. If people are aware of its dangers, its misuse can be stopped, she said.
As part of raising the awareness, the ministry reissued a general warning against aluminium phosphide on Sunday. We have to continuously educate the people about this, Alqaydi said.
Moreover, its legal use for agricultural purposes rises during summer and the ministry wants to prevent its misuse, she said.
Aluminium phosphide is classified as a severely restricted agricultural pesticide for indoor fumigation of raw agricultural commodities in silos and grain warehouses only.
But this use is on a very small scale and only a few companies are allowed to import this chemical to the UAE under strict supervision, Alqaydi said. Its use is restricted under the supervision of qualified specialists and agricultural engineers. The authorised pest control companies should submit a monthly report to the ministry about the used pesticides.
Although currently there are no internationally declared alternatives for its agricultural use, the ministry is working on finding safer alternatives. It is under study, the official said.
The ministrys warning said that aluminium phosphide turns from solid state to gas once the package is opened, spreading the deadly phosphine (PH3) that causes poisoning and death.
Those who use it could face prosecution.

PRECISION PEST CONTROL COMMERCIAL v2 - Video
Crape myrtles have adapted well to the climate of the south and southeastern United States. They are a significant component of low-maintenance landscape. One of the toughest and showiest plants for Texas landscapes, their colorful flowers, long bloom season, attractive bark and beautiful shape make them among our most valued landscape ornamentals.
For many years, a fungal disease -- powdery mildew -- was the major pest of crape myrtles, but hybridizers were successful in breeding resistance into newer varieties. However, a new pest is causing some concern. Crape myrtle scale, which first appeared in the Dallas area in 2004, seems to be spreading and has found its way to Brazos County.
No cause for alarm though, as experts are hard at work and already have some suggestions for managing this unwelcome intruder. In a May 2, 2014, news release by Ag Communications, Steve Byrns shared the following information on this pest from two Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts.
Dr. Mike Merchant, AgriLife Extension urban entomologist at Dallas, said the new scale pest turns the bark of crape myrtle trees an ugly black color .
"We are still figuring out the identity of this insect, but we believe it is Eriococcus lagerstromemia, a scale previously known only from Asia," said Merchant. "We've been referring to it as the crape myrtle bark scale."
Dr. Mengmeng Gu, AgriLife Extension horticulture specialist at College Station, had the chance to see the scale up close in its native China during a trip she made there last year.
"It's not pretty," she said. "Crape myrtles we saw in Chinese gardens show the same symptoms as trees here in Texas." Gu's horticultural contacts in other states revealed that the pest is not restricted to the Dallas area as was previously thought.
"As of today, scale infestations have been found on crape myrtles in North Texas, College Station, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and in the Memphis, Tenn. area," she said.
Official confirmation of the scientific name must await verification by molecular biologists and taxonomists, Merchant said. In the meantime, he said the pest continues to spread.
Merchant first discovered the scale on a commercial property at Richardson in 2004. "We believe someone brought a cutting of crape myrtle that was infested with this scale into the country in luggage," he said. "It's a perfect example of why it's a bad idea to bring home undeclared illegal plant material from other countries."
