Keep Pests Outdoors Where They Belong This Winter - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As temperatures across the country drop and the holiday season approaches, My Pest Pros, LLC reminds homeowners to take steps to prevent pests from dropping by uninvited. Mice, rats and cockroaches love nothing more than to spend the chilly winter inside a cozy home, bringing with them health and property threats.

As temperatures across the country drop and the holiday season approaches, My Pest Pros, LLC reminds homeowners to take steps to prevent pests from dropping by uninvited. Rodents and cockroaches, the most common winter pests, love nothing more than to spend the chilly winter inside a cozy home, bringing with them health and property threats.

Most people associate cooler weather with relief from flying pests such as mosquitoes and wasps, but the winter brings on a different set of pest problems that are just as serious, said Brett Lieberman of My Pest Pros. Mice, rats and squirrels are most likely to cause problems in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, D.C. this time of year, so its important for homeowners to prevent these pests from entering their homes.

Our trained and licensed pest control professionals can help eliminate and prevent rodent and other pest problems for homeowners in Fairfax, across Northern Virginia and the DC Metro area, Lieberman said.

Aside from being nuisances, rodents and cockroaches are vectors of a wide array of diseases and can exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms - effects only worsened by the increased time spent indoors during the winter. Rodents can also chew through drywall, insulation, wood and electrical wiring, increasing the potential risk for fires.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) offers the following tips for keeping homes pest-free this winter:

    - Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home to help prevent pests from getting inside. Be sure to check the areas where utilities and pipes enter the home. - - A mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime. - Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows. - Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home. Pests often take up residence in wood piles and can easily gain access to your home if the pile is nearby. - Rodents can hide in clutter, so keep storage areas well organized, and store boxes off of the floor. - Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains. Extra attention should be paid to kitchens and bathrooms as these areas are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. - Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens in windows. - Screen vents to chimneys. Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.

We encourage homeowners to remain vigilant throughout the winter for any signs of pest infestations and to regularly inspect for any possible points of entry throughout the home, added Lieberman.

UF/IFAS Scientists Find Potential Biological Control for Avocado-Ravaging Disease - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Newswise GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- University of Florida scientists believe theyve found what could be the first biological control strategy against laurel wilt, a disease that threatens the states $54 million-a-year avocado industry.

Red ambrosia beetles bore holes into healthy avocado trees, bringing with them the pathogen that causes laurel wilt. Growers control the beetles that carry and spread laurel wilt by spraying insecticides on the trees, said Daniel Carrillo, an entomology research assistant professor at the Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead.

But a team of researchers from the Tropical REC and the Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce have identified a potential biological control to use against redbay ambrosia beetles that could help growers use less insecticide.

First, they exposed beetles to three commercially available fungi, and all of the beetles died. Then they sprayed the fungi on avocado tree trunks, and beetles got infected while boring into the trunk. About 75 percent of those beetles died, said Carrillo, an Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences faculty member.

Ideally, the fungal treatments could prevent beetles from boring into the trees, eliminating the risk that the pathogen would enter the trees, the study said. But tests showed female beetles bored into the trees and built tunnels regardless of the treatment. Still, researchers say their treatment can prevent the female beetles from laying eggs.

UF/IFAS scientists dont know yet how much less chemical spray will be needed to control the redbay ambrosia beetle. But Carrillo sees this study as the first step toward controlling the beetle in a sustainable way.

When you want to manage a pest, you want an integrated pest management approach, Carrillo said. This provides an alternative that we would use in combination with chemical control.

The redbay ambrosia beetle -- native to India, Japan, Myanmar and Taiwan -- was first detected in 2002 in southeast Georgia. It was presumably introduced in wood crates and pallets, and its rapid spread has killed 6,000 avocado trees in Florida, or about 1 percent of the 655,000 commercial trees in Florida. The beetle was first discovered in South Florida in 2010.

Bird B Gones AgriLaser Provides Affordable Bird Control for Open and Semi-Open Spaces - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) November 13, 2014

Bird B Gone, the leader in bird control products for commercial, industrial and residential applications now offers an easy, affordable way to get rid of birds in open and semi-open spaces. An alternative to trapping birds or using capture netting, the AgriLaser Lite is ideal for use outdoors as well in big box stores, warehouses and airplane hangers.

Pest birds can pose a costly nuisance for property owners and managers. For big box stores and warehouses, birds can distract workers and annoy shoppers. Birds can also create unsanitary conditions around food storage and service areas. In airplane hangers, birds can distract workers and damage delicate aircraft parts and assemblies. In all semi-enclosed areas, bird droppings can create dangerous slip-and-fall hazards for both workers and shoppers.

Around farms, birds can quickly lay waste to acres of crops, for they not only eat (or partially eat) produce, but they can impart bacteria and fungal pathogens that alter its flavor. Contamination by bird droppings can further reduce crop yields. For seaside businesses and properties, bird droppings can deface and damage areas and contaminate eateries with any of the 60 known diseases many birds carry. This can pose a significant problem for any business that stores, processes or serves food.

Lethal means of bird control are mostly ineffective and usually illegal, as many species are protected by law. The only viable solution to getting rid of pest birds around these venues is through the use professional bird repellents that have proven to be both humane and effective. One such solution is the AgriLaser Lite.

The Agrilaser Lite uses advanced, patented optical laser-beam technology to harmlessly repel pest birds over great distancesup to 2,000 meters. The handheld device is silent and portable. Much like an approaching car, birds perceive the green laser beam as a rapidly approaching physical threat, so they flee the area. Unlike some bird deterrent devices, birds will not get used to the laser beam and will be always be repelled. Developed with the help of farmers and ornithologists, the Agrilaser is animal friendly and ideal for repelling a variety of birds. It is most effective during sunrise and sunset, and in overcast, rainy or foggy weather conditions.

Self contained and portable, the Agrilaser Lite comes with a battery pack that consists of two rechargeable batteries and an associated power charger. A high quality case protects the Agrilaser Lite and makes it easy to transport.

Bird B Gone is the worlds largest manufacturer and distributor of bird control products, providing effective and humane solutions to a bird-free environment. The company provides advice, training and installation services for those who need help with these and other bird control measures.

Alterra Raises $31,327 to Help Fight Malaria - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Provo, Utah (PRWEB) November 13, 2014

Malaria kills over one million people per year and is one of the leading causes of death among humans. The majority of these cases are attributed to a single bite inflicted on a person from a disease-infected mosquito. Alterra decided to join the fight against Malaria with Nothing But Nets in a big way. David Royce, Founder & CEO, has supported the non-profit Nothing But Nets since 2009, and was anxious to find a way to enlist the support from his employees.

Alterra rallied its 1,000+ employees in nineteen U.S. branches to unite in the cause. Motivated by a bit of competition, employees at each branch were encouraged to give a minimum $10 donation. Over the course of two weeks, each branchs progress was visible to everyone to heighten the competitions feel and encourage transparency. In an effort to simplify the donation process, employees could have their contributions deducted directly from their paychecks.

Throughout the campaign, the company reiterated the purpose of the charity by posting flyers in their branches, sending emails and text messages to employees, and using Alterras company Facebook page to keep employees and followers updated.

Chief Customer Officer Derrick Royce stated, The Nothing But Nets concept and process is simple and very easy to get behind. We wanted each branch to raise $1,000, for a company total of $19,000. If we hit that target, David committed to donate an additional $5,000. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our people. What Alterra found was a tremendous response of humanity from its staff. In total, Alterra was able to raise more than $31,000 over the course of two weeks, which would in turn generate 3,132 insecticide-treated bed nets for African families in need.

Alterra sets an excellent example of how any pest control company can combine corporate goals with a great social cause. They hope to inspire other pest control companies to join the Nothing But Nets cause in an effort to fight the worlds biggest pest - the mosquito. Alterra has decided to institute this charity drive as an annual challenge with their employees each summer.

For information about Nothing But Nets and sponsorship opportunities, or to donate, please contact Kavita Sood, Senior Campaign Associate, at ksood@unfoundation.org.

Alterra provides residential and commercial pest control services in more than 1000+ cities nationwide (in 20 major markets) and is ranked #26 on the PCT Top 100 list as the fastest growing pest control company in North America. Alterra is accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and specializes in environmentally responsible solutions. Alterra is also a proud partner of the United Nations Foundation Nothing But Nets, and also dedicates a portion of company profits annually to provide insecticide-treated bed nets to help save lives in underdeveloped countries.

How End-to-End MDM Leaves Rollins With One Less Pest to Control - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    .

For many enterprises, a mobility strategy means fine-tuning customer-facing apps. Other companies, however, aim to take their in-house mobility management to the next level. Rollins, an Atlanta-based company that provides pest control services through 10 subsidiaries, including Orkin, recently selected a service provider to provide end-to-end mobile device management.

The partnership with Bethesda, Md.-based Digital Management Inc. (DMI), announced in October, goes beyond traditional management approaches that focus mainly on tracking devices. Bryan Larrieu, managing director of IT customer service at Rollins, says the company previously employed a mobile device management provider, but the nature of the service has changed in recent years. Rollins went back into the market for device management to tap into a broader set of services. DMI offers enterprise mobility services to commercial and government entities.

[ Analysis: Mobility Brings Changing Roles for CIOs, Workers and Businesses ]

"If you talked about mobile device management three years ago, it was all about being able to locate a device and ... disable [it] should it get away," Larrieu says. "Today, from a managed services standpoint, it's a lot more feature-rich."

The current service menu includes mobile application development and distribution as well as device logistics, which includes staging, imaging and provisioning devices.

The scope of DMI's arrangement with Rollins covers more than 5,000 company-owned devices, many of which are in the hands of service technicians. A critical aspect of the device management pact is the ability to resupply those technicians when they lose a device or experience a defective unit. Technicians use mobile apps that help them conduct business, so keeping them equipped with functioning devices lets them continue to create "billable moments," Larrieu says.

The DMI relationship gets replacement devices to the field the day after a mishap occurs -- provided DMI receives the request by midafternoon. "We can turn these devices around pretty quickly," he says.

DMI also provides device configuration services. Sam Ganga, executive vice president for DMI's Commercial Division, says the company makes as many changes as possible over the air, to minimize business disruption. A significant change to the base image that runs on Rollins' mobile devices will require the units to come into DMI's facility for an upgrade.
