The mystery of the alleged rats at Union Station - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Downtown business owners are bracing for a rat infestation after a pest control company warned that the demolition and construction of several underground structures at Union Station has displaced a large rat colony, forcing its migration to new areas of the downtown.

But the exact location and size of the rat colony remain a mystery along with other facts about the alleged rats.

Nobody knows. Mike Heimbach, spokesman for Abell Pest Control, which sent out the news release, said the company does not service Union Station but has received a lot more calls about rats from residents and business owners in the area. He also said that its not a colony but a population of rats.

What do Metrolinx and the TTC say?

Nope, havent seen a single rat, said Metrolinx media relations manager Anne Marie Aikins, who works out of Union Station. She added that rats arent usually seen on the Metrolinx level and are generally found underground.

We have no reports of any increased activity in rats, said TTC spokesman Brad Ross.

Where in the station were they living?

Nobody knows. Rats are common in any city, especially in underground areas like subways. Since Abell doesnt service Union, none of its workers have gone in to look for rats, Heimbach said.

    Where are the rats going?

No one really knows. Heimbach said the station rats are pushing out other rats in the area, which in turn causes those rats to spread out through the city. As well, since its getting colder, more rats will try to get indoors.

Toronto's Union Station renovation forces rats into city - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The ongoing construction at Union Station is causing dozens of rats to find new homes, according to a Toronto pest control company.

While the transit hub gets a facelift, rats have been forced out of nests in subway tunnels and dark corners, Abell Pest Control's Steven Graff said in a statement released Monday.

Those who live and work in the downtown area are being advised to keep an eye out for the four-legged critters.

Rats often live outdoors during the summer, but start migrating indoors when cool weather approaches.

As the rodent colony from Union Station moves away from the demolition, existing rat populations may be pushed out of the downtown core.

"We're urging businesses and homeowners to be proactive," Graff said.

Abell advises that home and business owners plug all entry points, including damaged door frames and holes left from vents. Rats will search for openings larger than two centimetres in diameter, according to the City of Toronto. Any openings should be covered with metal sheeting, and any vents can be covered with heavy gauge wire mesh.

Garbage and composting containers should not be left outside longer than necessary, and all food should be stored in rodent-proof containers.

The city also recommends residents monitor their property for signs of rats, like capsule-shaped droppings, burrows and chewed food.

They should keep an eye out for any potential nesting areas, like cupboards and closets. Rats can also burrow into walls or under floors.
