New York, NY (PRWEB) December 27, 2013
The rise of bed bugs across the United States has left homeowners and business owners frustrated, but been a boon for the Pest Control industry, which experienced heightened demand for its services. During the five years to 2013, the industry is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 1.9% to record $11.1 billion in revenue, including an increase of 3.3% in 2013. While bed bugs were typically confined to hotels and some residences in the past, the creatures have begun to pop up in unlikely spots, including movie theaters, offices and even clothing stores. The increased occurrence of these pests has led to substantial demand for pest exterminators and rising service prices, according to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Stephen Morea. Furthermore, the more insecticide-resistant strain of bed bugs has driven operators to research product innovation to deliver solutions to homeowners and businesses. Heightened demand for bed bug extermination has also caused the number of industry companies to rise. In the five years to 2013, the number of industry enterprises is expected to increase at an annualized rate of 2.2% to 22,533 companies.
Rising demand and service prices have resulted in higher profit margins for pest control companies. While profit margins declined slightly during the recession due to rising fuel expenses and price-based competition, heightened demand for industry services has favorably affected margins overall and allowed operators to pass on price increases to consumers, says Morea.
Conditions are expected to further improve over the five years to 2018, with industry revenue forecast to increase. Increased business and consumer spending will drive demand for regular inspections for pests. Furthermore, with increased income, businesses and consumers will be less likely to opt for cheaper household products from home and garden stores. Instead, they will favor more effective and expensive professional exterminating treatments. Housing sales and residential construction are also expected to rise, further supporting demand for fumigation services. Increasing and changing pest populations across the United States will characterize the next five years for the Pest Control industry.

With frigid temperatures and the first snowfall blanketing the country, homeowners aren't the only ones seeking shelter indoors this winter. According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes each winter. Horizon Pest Control, having served New Jersey residents for 43 years, urges homeowners to take extra steps to ensure a rodent-free home this season.

Horizon Pest Control offers tips to help homeowners pest-proof their home.
"Winter is a prime time for rodent infestations because they are seeking shelter from the cold weather and easy access to food," said Bernard Holst, Jr. at Horizon Pest Control. "Once inside, rodents can breed very quickly, leaving homeowners with a much bigger problem to deal with."
While rodents are unwelcome house guests, the real concern is that these pests can cause property damage and carry disease. "Rodents such as mice and rats spread Salmonella and Hantavirus by contaminating food and preparation surfaces," said Holst. "They can also chew through wood and electrical wires, in some cases sparking house fires."
It's much easier to prevent a rodent infestation than to remove them after they've turned your home into their new residence. Here are a few steps homeowners can take to keep their homes rodent-free:
* Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home to help prevent rodents from finding easy entryways
* Keep shrubberies cut back from the house and store firewood a good distance away. The NPMA recommends that you store firewood at least 20 feet from the home and five inches off the ground
* Rodents can hide in clutter, so keep areas clear and store boxes off of the floor
* Keep food in tightly sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills

Cold weather causes pest problems -

If youve been trying to keep warm inside as much as possible, chances are the rodents around your house are trying to do the same thing.
Every winter pest control companies see a spike in customers dealing with mice and insects making themselves comfortable inside homes.
How do you know if you have a new furry roommate? Check your cabinets and baseboards for chew marks.
Their front teeth never stop growing so theyre constantly gnawing on things like wood or wires to keep their teeth short and sharp, pest professional Pieter Rebentisch with Gemtek Pest Control said.
Also, keep an eye out for mouse droppings. Check in the cabinets under your bathroom and kitchen sinks for what looks like tiny dark grains of rice.
Mice scale the outside of your home, hoping to find a small opening.
Mice can fit through a hole the size of your pinky, they can squeeze through very small tight spots," Rebentisch said.
If they can get under your home, they just hop on the pipeline express, follow the plumbing, and voila! They're nice and warm in the comfort of your home.
"A home is basically a great place for shelter- so to be warm, make a nest, reproduce, and then usually in our house we've got a lot of food!" Rebentisch said.

Ferrell was given a plaque celebrating his 15 years of service by his wife, Michelle.
When Dan Ferrell thinks back to 1998, he still vividly remembers launching his termite and pest control business, with the companys headquarters based at his Bumpass home and one company truck to his name.
In the time since, the headquarters have stayed the same, but thats about it. Ferrells Termite & Pest Control now boasts a fleet of 11 vehicles and eight licensed field workers, and recently celebrated his 15th year of business.
I figured Id still be in business, Ferrell said of his mindset when he first founded the company. I had no idea that it would grow to the size that it did, though. I think weve done right well. The good Lord has blessed us, and you cant complain about that.
Ferrell founded the company after a 17-year career working for national pest control company Terminixs Fredericksburg location.
Ferrell spurned an offer from Terminix to relocate to Northern Virginia due to his unwillingness to leave his sons or his hometown of 30 years, and instead decided to begin his own business.
I felt like I needed to be here and not away from them, Ferrell said. I said to myself, If I can do it for [Terminix], why cant I do it for myself?
Since then, the company has continued to steadily expand. Ferrell said he ties his companys success to the way he instructs his employees to treat customers while on the job.
I try to tell everybody to think in terms of, If this was my own house, what would I want to do? We want to look and act professional, Ferrell said.
