Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 09, 2014
2014 marks five decades of success for Bird-X, Inc. Find out how one company grew from a single-man operation to an industry leader in a changing marketplace spreading values of environmentalism, safety, and the ethical treatment of animals worldwide.
The Early Years During the early 1960s, going green was risky business especially for a new business. In these years before the hippie movement took off, cars got around 12-15 miles per gallon and pest control was still entirely chemical-based. In January 1964, the same year that atomic-aged film the Last Man on Earth was released, Dick Seid founded Bird-X, Inc. in his hometown of Chicago, Illlinois serving as the sole employee.
Ethics have always been at the heart of the company, and market demands for humane, green products have gratefully rewarded Bird-X for holding these values. Seldom does an entrepreneur see his dream so far surpass his expectations.
Five Decades of Growth Bird-X is now currently sold in over 150 countries in every major industry including pest control, retail, manufacturing, transportation, and U.S. government facilities and federal agencies. The ability to remain flexible and change with market demands and industry standards has allowed Bird-X to stay at the top of the market. According to Dick, We evolved the same way any other small company does; by trying always to diversify our product line, improve performance, increase our markets, serve our customers well, keep our prices competitive, make ourselves more internally efficient, and treat our employees with respect. I believe weve succeeded in all of these.
Many employees both past and present have been with the company for 15, 20, and over 30 years. This not only means Bird-X can work more efficiently, it means customers benefit from the knowledge of an experienced staff. Exceptional customer service is one of Bird-Xs core values after all, happy customers are to thank for the companys long life!
As Bird-X has grown exponentially, Dick has kept a strong focus on protecting human health, wildlife, and the environment by using efficient, intelligently designed products. Following in step with these core ethics and principles, Dick expanded the company line, and Bird-X currently sells hundreds of non-lethal, environmentally-responsible products, including a line of low-wattage heaters (sold under the company name Cozy Products) and efficient dental products (sold as Yates Motloid).
When asked if he had any words about Bird-Xs Golden Anniversary, Dick simply said, Yes. It went so fast.
Passing the Torch for Future Success Dick has since passed his role at Bird-X into the hands of his son, Joe Seid, and hired Dennis Tilles to run the company as President, noting this as one of the most important defining moments for Bird-X. We will continue to hold the values and ethics this company was founded on as we expand our business, stated Joe Seid. Dennis Tilles added, We pride ourselves in offering environmentally friendly solutions for our customers everyday problems. We offer world class products and service on products that help improve the environment which is very gratifying

ABC Rural Trojan force: researchers say Trojan females look like normal females, but their male offspring are infertile.
Scientists in Australia and New Zealand are working on a new approach in the battle against insect and animal pests, inspired by a fighting tactic from Greek mythology; the Trojan horse.
Pests can eat through crops, wipe out native flora and fauna, and sicken or kill animals and humans.
The New Zealand government estimates that pests cost its primary industries $2 billion per year, in money spent on control measures and loss of earnings due to lost production.
But Professor Neil Gemmell from the Anatomy Department of Dunedin's Otago University believes a new approach to pest eradication using "Trojan females" may ease the pain.
"The Trojan female idea is that, like the Trojan horse in the Troy war, it looks good but it contains something intrinsically bad for that population," he said.
"Our Trojan females look fine, they're normal fertile females, but they produce sons who are infertile which is bad news for the population."
Trojan females are not created through genetic modification, he says, but through a naturally occurring mutation in mitochondrial DNA.
"We could be looking for mutations which occur with the frequency of somewhere around one in 200, one in 300, may be one in 1,000," he said.
"And if we can find them in large populations, which pest populations often are, identify those individuals, bring them into captive situations, breed the females up, then we have a tool potentially we could use for eradication."

Council to charge for pest control and stray dog services
7:31pm Monday 6th January 2014 in News
RAT catching and the returning of stray dogs by Stroud District Council (SDC) will now come with a price tag as it looks to plug a gap in its budget.
Getting rid of rats in homes has until now been a free service for the district's residents but they now face paying 45, or 30 for those on income-related benefits.
It will also cost dog owners 25 to have their pet returned if it is lost but micro-chipped, with the concessionary rate now removed, if the proposal is passed this evening (Thursday, January 9) at the Strategy and Resources Committee meeting.
The move was passed by the Environment Comittee at Ebley Mill on December 5 and is expected to be approved tonight, along with a host of other money-saving measures to meet a gap in the medium term financial plan.
SDC expects to earn 32,000 from the extra charges but will keep fees for other pests, including mice, wasps, fleas and other insects, the same.
Rat catching accounted for 1,134 visits by pest control officers last year, or 72 per cent of their total workload.
In his report to the Environment Committee, head of Environmental Health Jon Beckett said that because of the current economic climate, the move may cause concern for some users.
However this needs to be balanced against the fact that the council is facing increased financial pressures and all opportunities to generate income need to be considered, he said.
