Albany Pest Control Pros Offer Tips to Prevent Mosquito-Borne Illness - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Albany, NY (PRWEB) July 29, 2014

Summer is here in Albany which means that most people are spending a lot of time outdoors taking advantage of the good weather; summer can also mean mosquitoes - a lot of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are commonly responsible for ending outdoor activities early and driving many summer gatherings back inside. These tiny pests can be very annoying and painful as they swarm around you and bite you leaving behind sore, itchy welts. Along with being irritating, they are potentially very dangerous because of their ability to spread serious diseases to you and your family with every bite that they take.

Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading the West Nile virus; several thousand cases of the disease are reported to the CDC each year and there are probably many more cases that arent reported. About 80% of West Nile virus infections cause the person infected to experience no symptoms at all and in about 20% of cases, the person experiences flu-like symptoms, vomiting, headache, body aches, and fever. A very small percentage, less than 1% of people acquire a severe case of the disease that causes their central nervous system to become affected, and the disease can become fatal. Along with West Nile virus, other diseases that mosquitoes spread include dengue fever, malaria, rift valley fever, yellow fever, and eastern equine encephalitis. Not all these are found in the U.S. but with the ease and affordability of travel they are still a threat to many people as they move about internationally.

The best way to prevent mosquito-borne illness is to make sure that you are doing all you can to reduce the mosquito populations around your home and property. Mosquitoes are drawn to properties that have areas of standing water (ponds, pools, bird baths, wheel barrows, etc.) because this is where the female mosquitoes lay their eggs. Therefore, reducing areas of standing water should help to limit the number of mosquitoes on your property. Other ways to prevent mosquitoes include making sure that your grass is trimmed short, your gutters are free of clogs, and limiting the amount of flowering plants and landscaping on your property.

Thomas Pest Services offers mosquito control services to help you further prevent and control mosquitoes on your Albany property. Our mosquito control services include the following:

-A thorough inspection of your property to evaluate why mosquitoes are being drawn to it. -Application of a mosquito control product to shrubbery, plants, the perimeter of your home, and around your property.

Mosquitoes are not just found on your property. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are going to be present wherever you are spending time outdoors this summer. Thomas Pest Services would like to offer some tips on how to avoid getting bit by mosquitoes.

    1. Dress appropriately; when possible try to wear long pants, long sleeves, and shoes with socks. Wearing a hat will also help keep bites to a minimum. 2. Wear light colored clothing. Dark colors will attract mosquitoes to you. 3. Use a bug repellant spray. 4. Time when you are going to be outside; mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.

Even though you may consider mosquitoes to just be an annoying part of summer, they are much more than just a nuisance and can spread serious diseases. However, with the help of a pest control expert, you can reduce their numbers on your property and protect yourself and family from their bites and from potential illness.

Honolulu Pest Control Pros Offer Tips to Prevent Wildlife Infestations - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Honolulu, Hawaii (PRWEB) July 29, 2014

Living in paradise is a reality for any who call Hawaii home. The Hawaiian islands are some of the most beautiful places on earth. Paradise has a few downfalls though. Dealing with destructive and dangerous wildlife is one of those few downfalls. Birds, feral pigs, chickens, and cats are among these wildlife animals. They aren't respectful of the boundaries between the forest and our homes and businesses. Usually on the look out for food, shelter, water and warmth, these nomads will make anyplace their home or feeding area.

Keeping wildlife away from our homes and businesses can be tricky work. It is never a good idea to try to handle or deal with a wild animal by yourself, especially if it is trapped and feeling threatened. When confronted with a wildlife problem, you should always call a trained professional for help. Thankfully, however, there are a few tips we would like to share to help you prevent the threat of wildlife animals on your property.

Feral pigs are destructive and dangerous. They forage through any type of ground cover, often digging up the ground in search of tree and plant roots. This will kill the plants and trees, as well as interrupt the natural ecosystem that is in place. Water will collect in these low foraging spots, providing more breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes carry viruses and diseases that not only affect humans but can kill off some of the endangered native Hawaiian birds. These four legged rototillers have been know to be aggressive and will defend themselves, as well as attack. Controlling them is crucial to maintaining Hawaiis beautiful paradise status...but this should only be done by a professional.

Feral cats will find homes in old barns, cars, under mobile homes or in sheds. They mate and procreate quite rapidly. Even though they appear to be soft and cuddly, remember that they are not. They are a wild animal that does not generally trust humans. Often these trespassing felines will forage through trash looking for food.

Feral chickens and other pest birds will forage anywhere. While one would think that they are just eating up insects and bugs; that isn't correct. Chickens will also try to find an easy meal by heading into your garage, shed or any other place that may provide a food source. Pigeons are damaging to roofs and other areas that they choose to roost on. They are known to damage outside lights and electrical service entries. Pest birds can also spread disease and virus ridden waste in their wake.

    Tips for control:

Despite our knowledge of these pests, Hawaiian wild animals continue finding their way into homes and businesses. Keeping them away is crucial which is why contacting a pest control professional, like Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions, is the safest and most successful way to rid yourself of unwanted and trespassing wildlife. We offer animal control services to protect your home, family and business from the negative effects that these nuisances can have. We utilize such measures as:

Remember, if you find that you are facing an issue with the wild side of Hawaii encroaching on your home or business, don't try to handle it yourself. Instead, click here to learn more about the animal control options at Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions.

Feral cats getting second lease on life - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN ANTONIO Loire James of Somerset lives on a rural property with a carport and a horse stable. She buys 40 sacks of horse feed every two weeks and has had pest problems with the feed, especially with scorpions.

But a program in which Animal Care Services vaccinates and sterilizes feral cats, then places them in homes where their wild instincts can be of use, has eliminated James' pest problem.

It helps place the cats in a home they don't pass away, James said. Also, the cats take care of the rodents.

San Antonio farms, businesses and warehouses are similarly taking part in the adoption program that rids their properties of vermin. Initiated by ACS last year, the program gives jobs to cats that would otherwise be unmatchable with pet-seeking families.

To find out more about the feral cat program at ACS, visit ExpressNews.com, our subscribers only website.
