RARE FLYER: The long-tailed bat is one of the endangered species set to benefit from a 1080 pest-control operation.
A war on pests is set to launch in Fiordland as part of a national offensive to save the country's endangered native wildlife.
The first operation in the Department of Conservation's Battle for our Birds pest control programme starts with an operation in the Iris Burn valley in Fiordland National Park tomorrow.
The Iris Burn operation is one of 22 confirmed operations that will use aerially applied 1080 over about 600,000 hectares of conservation land to knock down rising predator numbers fuelled by unusually heavy seeding in South Island beech forests.
Critically endangered long-tailed bat populations along with whio, mohua, Fiordland tokoeka kiwi, kea and kaka over 11,200 hectares in the Iris Burn valley and adjacent areas, including alongside Lake Manapouri, will be protected.
DOC Fiordland Conservation Services manager Lindsay Wilson said monitoring results showed significant silver beech seed-fall in the area and rapidly rising rat and mice numbers.
"Rodent numbers are already tracking towards levels that will trigger a stoat plague in the next few months - just as our most vulnerable species are nesting and trying to raise their young," he said.
"If we don't act now to knock back these predators, we could lose species such as long-tailed bat and mohua from the Iris Burn."
Tomorrow, non-toxic cereal bait pellets will be spread across the target area.
This "pre-feeding" technique would encourage rats to eat the biodegradable poison-laced cereal pellets, which would follow when weather conditions allowed, Wilson said.

Counting Cockroaches -
August 14, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
A Virginia Tech researcher looking for ways to improve pest control techniques in public housing projects turned to the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She found fertile ground for her tests.
We found the largest, most spectacular infestations I have seen in my career. There are sanitation problems, water issues, clutter and the cockroaches have a lot of access to food, Dr. Dini Miller, a professor of urban entomology, told Pest Control Technology Magazine for their annual cockroach issue, published last month.
RRHA houses 10,000 people in 4,000 units. Before testing new application techniques, Miller used glue traps to determine each apartment had an average of 464 cockroaches.
The cockroach populations were flourishing and the infestations have been there for a long time, Miller said. We found cockroaches everywhere in the storage units, living in a deck of cards, on walls, in the sink in the cooking oil.
Millers work revealed the number of cockroaches could be cut by 90 to 95 percent by simply deploying more cockroach bait.
The problem, Miller told Style, is that the RRHA relies on low-bid contracts for pest control. The result is that the company that wins by offering the lower bid keeps its costs low by simply doing inadequate work, spending less than five minutes on each unit. She said it should take at least 15 minutes per unit.
Miller said she worked with RRHA to rewrite their pest control contracts. She declined to name the specific housing projects she studied because she said she didn't want to upset the housing authority.
She says pest control companies and property management companies typically blame infestations on cleanliness of residents, but her study proves that adequate treatment is the bigger issue.
Its very hard for people who have no background in pest control to write that contract, Miller said. Imagine asking your mother to do it. She wouldnt know where to start.

(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Muscat Municipality's pest control services for homes provided on request for free may soon be withdrawn while the authorities will continue the drive outdoors.
The reasons that have made the municipality contemplate stopping home services include inculcating in people the habit of maintaining cleanliness in their homes. Also municipal teams are sometimes given a tough time by home owners who despite requesting the service have doubts over health risks from the pesticides used officials say.
Rashid al Hinai deputy director of health affairs for the municipality's Seeb directorate said 'Muscat Municipality is planning to stop pest control services for homes provided on request. Those wanting the service can contact private companies; we can suggest them which firms to approach.'
While the free home services to battle cockroaches rodents and sometime bed bugs are given on call the municipality is regular with its monthly outdoor pest control drives said Mufeed Abdullah Saif Alkalbani pest control specialist in the municipality's directorate of health.
Hinai said 'Indoor pests are a result of unhealthy practices. If people maintain cleanliness they won't have to knock on the municipality's doors. We will continue outdoor pest control. Mosquitoes and flies increase depending on the season and if we control the source of these pests outdoors they are automatically controlled indoors. If we stop people will get into the habit of keeping their homes clean.'
Carrying out pest control in homes is an expensive affair he said. 'We invest money manpower and time. People register complaints but when our teams reach their homes they are reluctant to open the doors. Teams have been made to wait out for 20 to 30 minutes before being let in.'
Another issue is people's doubts Hinai said. 'They want to know if it's safe. They fear the pesticides may stain their walls. This despite the fact that we use the best quality.'
The municipality says it uses approved methods to control pests like mosquitoes houseflies cockroaches and rodents - all harmful to public health.
The municipality's Directorate of Health Affairs has taken to Twitter to keep its more than 20000 followers informed about ways to control pest infestation at home.<

DALLAS Maintenance professionals gearing up for the start of school now have a new tool to help defend students from the inevitable summer influx of undesirables roaming the halls.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services new integrated pest management website, http://ipmcalculator.com, offers school staff members in charge of pest control a wealth of practical information on managing rodents, birds, cockroaches, ants and a plethora of other unwelcome denizens, said Janet Hurley, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management program specialist at Dallas.
The cost calculator, available free on the website, allows the user to assess various pest risks on their school and district levels, Hurley said. The resulting information will be a big help for those responsible for developing a budget for a school integrated pest management program.
Hurley said using the calculator is as simple as entering the schools location, presence of pests and the facilitys condition. The calculator then gives an overall pest risk estimate for the school.
The calculator also has features that allow you to create your own budget to see how improving certain features will affect the overall pest risk, she said.
The cost calculator doubles as an excellent teaching tool because many aspects of general building maintenance also relate to pest issues, Hurley said.
The bottom line with this calculator is that it allows the user to see the impact different building budgeting plans, past, present or future, have had or will have on the facilitys pest risk profile, she said. Just as investors use spreadsheets to study the impact of various investment strategies, the pest calculator helps pest management coordinators maximize the most bang for their buck of currently budgeted dollars, or in some cases, helps them to justify requests for adding to those budgets.
