The world keeps shrinking for smokers.
As of New Years Day, it will be illegal to smoke on any bar or restaurant patio in Ontario, the province announced Friday.
Smoking is not only banned on public playgrounds and sports fields, it will be illegal to smoke within 20metres of them.
Sales of tobacco also will be prohibited anywhere on a college or university campus.
The new rules come as no surprise. London North Centre MPP Deb Matthews announced the new restrictions were coming a year ago when she was health minister.
The new provincial rules are tougher than the ban on smoking imposed by city council last year, which specified a nine-metre no-smoking zone around parks and recreational facilities. But council took no action on a recommendation from the Middlesex-London Health Unit to ban smoking on open patios, with some councillors arguing it would drive some bars and restaurants out of business.
Health unit manager Linda Stobo said the number of bars and restaurants affected will be limited because many have covered patios already subject to the smoking ban and about 20 establishments have voluntarily moved to end smoking on their patios.
One of them is Rich Hunter, owner of the King Edward Pub in Ilderton.
He banned smoking on his rear patio two years ago.
It was a business decision. It is what the majority of our customers wanted, he said.

It will soon be illegal to smoke on patios, playgrounds and public sports fields in Ontario.
The provincial government said Friday it is enacting regulatory changes to make good on previously announced tobacco control measures. The changes take effect on Jan. 1.
The government will also ban cigarette sales on university and college campuses.
The Ontario Restaurant, Hotel and Motel Association warned that banning smoking on all bar and restaurant patios will deal a significant blow to many businesses.
This industry needs some support. This industry has been struggling now for many years. The last recession was not very kind to this industry, said Tony Elenis, president and CEO. This should have been kept only in public spaces, which we believe in, but not into the restaurant patios.
Mr. Elenis also argued that customers who wish to smoke will be forced to light up in nearby parking lots and on sidewalks, which could risk the health of passing children.
For its part, the Canadian Cancer Society applauded the measures, calling them courageous.
We think this is a great step towards protecting the health of Ontarians, said Rowena Pinto, vice-president of public affairs and strategic initiatives at the organizations Ontario division.
The provincial government first announced the measures a year ago, but its bill died because of the recent election. Instead of reintroducing proposed legislation, the province decided to enact some of the changes through regulation, said spokesman David Jensen.
However, the new regulations do not include a ban on all sales of candy- and fruit-flavoured tobacco products, which was part of last years announcement. Such a move would require new legislation. Mr. Jensen said the province intends to propose further changes in the coming months.

TORONTO - Ontario will ban smoking on all restaurant and bar patios as well as at playgrounds and publicly owned sports fields starting Jan. 1, 2015, the Liberal government announced Friday.
Associate Health Minister Dipika Dameria said regulations will also be amended to ban the sale of tobacco on college and university campuses.
The changes to the Smoke Free Ontario Act will replace a patchwork of municipal regulations governing smoking on restaurant and bar patios, and will not hurt their businesses, she added.
"When we first introduced a ban on smoking inside restaurants and bars, there was a lot of concern raised that it would throw restaurants and bars out of business, but the evidence shows that did not happen," said Dameria.
"So we are very confident that there will be no adverse affects on restaurants and bars as we ban smoking on their patios.
The Progressive Conservatives support the changes but wonder why the Liberal government didn't do more to tackle the problem of contraband tobacco, which is often sold near colleges and universities at a fraction of the retail price.
"It doesn't address the fact that students can buy 200 cigarettes in a baggie for $8," said PC health critic Christine Elliott. "There's a lot more that needs to be done and I would really call on the government to start taking action on that front as well."
New Democrat France Gelinas fumed that the Liberals did not announce plans to reintroduce legislation that would extend a prohibition on sales of candy and fruit-flavoured tobacco products to youth to a total sales ban.

Smokers will have to butt out on patios and in parks across the province as the Liberal government plans to reintroduce anti-smoking legislation.
The new legislation, which will take effect on Jan. 1, also prohibits the sale of tobacco products on college and university campuses.
The Liberals introduced the bill to update the Smoke-Free Ontario Act last fall, but it died when the June 12 election was called.
The government says the bill will replace a patchwork of municipal regulations governing smoking on patios and around playgrounds.
Indeed, Toronto city council banned smoking on sports fields and in parks last fall.
The bill would also extend a prohibition on selling flavoured cigarillos and chewing tobacco to youth to a total sales ban.
Other flavoured products such as twist sticks, dissolvable strips and lozenges are also banned if they contain tobacco, but not if they have only nicotine without tobacco.
The Canadian Cancer Society has warned the lozenges, which look like candies and come in colourful packages, contain three times as much nicotine as a smoked cigarette.
The government said tobacco-related disease costs Ontarios health care system an estimated $2.2 billion in direct health care costs and an additional $5.3 billion in indirect costs such as lost productivity.
