If you want to see your city or even your circumstances in a new way, sometimes all it takes is a move to higher ground. Maybe take your morning coffee out on your second-floor balcony, hike up to the top of a hill, or even better, call friends to meet up for a cocktail at a rooftop restaurant or bar. Its bound to lift your spirits.
June marks the beginning of summer and the midway point in the year, which makes it the perfect time to take stock of where you are and where you are going. Even if you looked at the same view from the ground floor, it wouldnt compare to what you see when you look at something from a new and unique anglelike an artist who has stepped back from his canvas and can suddenly see all the brushstrokes coming into focus to reveal a beautiful painting.
Kansas Citian Doug Frost once commented to me about the incredible things he learned about his own palate and others simply by drinking in the air. As both a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier, Frost has the education, experience, and palate to pair wine with almost anything. For the last decade, he has used his extraordinary skills as the global wine and spirits consultant for United Airlines.
For this job, he must taste and select from tens of thousands of cases of wine and spirits each year to be poured on board one of the worlds largest carriers. His main challenge is that wine tastes much differently at 35,000 feet in the air than it does sitting in a caf or restaurant on terra firma. Red wines taste more tannic and white wines more acidic. When making his wine selections, Frost compensates for this by seeking out juicy wines that are fruit forward to balance the effects.
That same logic could be applied to drinking experiences at open-air rooftops. New spaces are opening every year, and their menus are jam-packed with juicy, summer-inspired, small plates and fruity cocktails.
So get out there! Its time to not only drink and dine outside, but to elevate that experience by doing so on some of the most interesting rooftop restaurants and bars in the city. Enjoy the view as much as the food and drink.
Green Dirt on Oak It is cool and casual on the roof of the new restaurant and event space, Green Dirt on Oak. Guests are welcome to take their drink or plate of locally made sheeps milk cheeses up to the rooftop to enjoy with views of downtown Kansas City. Just know that there is no cocktail service on the roof. For a refill, you need to return to the second-floor bar and place your order. But with cheese this good and views this tempting, its well worth putting in those steps.
Percheron at the Crossroads Hotel With live music on weekends, Percheron, the rooftop patio at the Crossroads Hotel, offers a chill spot to land for tantalizing view of both downtown and the Crossroads. Make reservations now to sit back and enjoy a list of breezy summer-inspired cocktails, wine, and beers paired with satisfying and shareable small plates and bar snacks. This hotel continues to be a hot spot for locals and visitors alike to socialize in style.
Messenger Coffee on Grand Sister businesses Messenger Coffee and Ibis Bakery share a beautiful three-story building that has been completely renovated. In addition to serving in-house roasted coffee and a large selection of amazing breads, pastries, along with breakfast and lunch plates. Messenger and Ibis have created plenty of spots to enjoy them. Check out the amazing rooftop deck, complete with a cozy outdoor fireplace and plenty of seating. Grab a cappuccino and chocolate croissant and head for the roof for a morning or midday pick-me-up.
Bamboo Pennys Everyone knows the delicious Thai food and tropical drinks that Penny and Doug Mufaka, along with Michael Werner, brought to the Park Place shopping center in Leawood when they opened Bamboo Pennys. But the best-kept secret here is the rooftop patio with retractable roof. With views of the Park Place grassy lawn below, on summer nights its the perfect spot to meet for ice-cold cocktails and a table full of small plates to enjoy with a side of starlight.
Horsefeather Social at Loews Hotel Located on the seventh floor of the Loews Hotel is Horsefeather Social, the seasonal rooftop bar and patio where locals and tourists gather for their first or last drink of the night with a spectacular view of the iconic Kauffman Performing Arts building. It offers a handful of shareable snacks and small plates, such as whipped goat cheese with lemon zest, honey, and lavosh crackers, along with craft cocktails, wine, and beer. The bar is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. Order the namesake horsefeather cocktail, sit back, and enjoy live music Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Coachs Bar & Grill on 135th Street Few restaurants in southern Johnson County offer outdoor rooftop patios, setting locally owned Coachs Bar & Grill apart from the chains that dominate the suburban landscape. Head to the roof to enjoy a breeze and an ice-cold beer or cocktail, along with some comforting bar and grill favorites, such as buffalo wings, burgers, and baskets of appetizers to share.
Strang Chef Collective at Cascade Hotel Strang Chef Collective is the newest food hall now open in the sleek Cascade Hotel, part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection located just north of the Country Club Plaza. Four chef-driven restaurant concepts occupy an 11,000-square-foot space that spans two floors. Guests will find four restaurants, one bar, and a practically perfect second-floor patio with outdoor seating and interesting views of a colorful mural. Enjoy food from Southeast Asia at Khai-Noy, German cuisine from Gasthaus, Latin American food from Verde, and Italian dishes at Parma.
Chicken N Pickle The rooftop patio at Chicken N Pickle is the perfect catbird seat to observe all the whizzing action on the pickleball courts below. With two locations in Kansas City and indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, along with a patio full of yard games like bags, washers and a human-sized game of Battleship, the only thing you need to enjoy the scene at Chicken N Pickle is a pretty day and a drink in your hand. Hungry? Try Chicken N Pickles spicy fried chicken sandwich and pair it with a local beer or the Knotty Cherry cocktail, a boozy take on a limeade.
Teocali Located in the Longfellow neighborhood, Teocali is a homegrown Mexican restaurant with a lot of heart. Its location offers three distinct floors to enjoy tacos, sopes, enchiladas, and platters of sizzling fajitas, in addition to a truly impressive selection of tequila. On a sunny day, take off early and enjoy the spacious third-floor rooftop patio with views of the whole neighborhood and a margarita in hand.
The Combine Kansas City native Alan Kneeland opened The Combine, a pizza shop located inside The Wonder Shops and Flats on Troost, in the fall of 2020. He had to hustle to get the word out, but now its enjoying a regular clientele that comes for pizza, deli sandwiches, chopped salads, cocktails, beer, and wine. In addition to his duties as owner of The Combine and the current president of the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association, Kneeland also manages the sizable Skyline Rooftop patio and lounge atop the building. The Skyline Rooftop can be reserved with bar and catering services from The Combine, which would allow you to throw one heck of a private pizza party with amazing sunset views.
Coming Soon: Blanc Champagne Bar An existing rooftop will soon be back in your regular orbit. Blanc Champagne Bar, owned by local Kansas City marketer Jordin Johnson, will open sometime in August in the former Canary space at 3835 Main Street after a facelift that will bring a lively floral vibe and rosy blush color to the space. The name comes from the French wine term blanc de blanc, which means white on white, and refers to champagnes made with all white grapes. The chef Chad Tillman is serving as the culinary consultant for the full-service restaurant on the first floor and rooftop garden patio. Expect charcuterie and cheese plates, along with a variety of small plates made for sharing, and a full cocktail bar and champagne menu boasting one of the most extensive bubble lists in the city. There will be a smaller snack menu served on the roof, which will be available to rent for private parties and open public happy hours.

Up on the Roof: Outdoor Patios to Take You to New Heights - In Kansas City

Summery weather is finally here, and all that warmth and sunshine means patio season has finally arrived, too.
Nothing says summer leisure like kicking back outdoors with a drink in your hand and something to nibble on. And you cant beat watching the late-setting sun go down on a warm summer evening from a prime vantage point on a patio.
Salt Lake City has many patios, but here are five that stood out to us because of their location, amenities, beauty, views and other characteristics.
Bonus: All five of these patios have been approved to welcome dogs, so you can bring your canine friend for some patio lounging this season as well.
(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) People sit in the patio space at Fisher in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 17, 2024.
Fisher Brewing Company has only grown since it opened in 2017 at 320 W. 800 South, in Salt Lake Citys Granary District. With several outdoor spaces including two front patios, a back patio, a central patio and, now, a brand-new rooftop patio, guests have more places than ever to kick back with a beer at Fisher.
Co-owner Tim Dwyer said that the rooftop patio is the conclusion of an expansion effort that began in 2021 and included adding a second main-floor bar, canning production area, and event spaces in a next-door building, as well a patio along the front of that building.
The rooftop patio features a shipping container that has been repurposed into a bar, retractable awnings for shade, tables, benches and really killer views of downtown and the surrounding mountains, Dwyer said.
Favorite beers for the rooftop bar will likely be the Fisher Beer and Fisher Cerveza, Dwyer said.
Also check out Fishers latest mixed-fermentation beers made with brettanomyces, a type of yeast that makes for a funky brew, Dwyer said, along with Fishers new fresh-squeezed housemade margarita mix. A rotating cast of food trucks provides a variety of food options.
If you visit the back patio, make sure to watch for the mural that says Welcome to Fisher, made by a group of local artists including Josh Scheuerman, Gailon Justus, Chuck Landvatter, Trent Call, Mike Murdock, Dave Doman, Chris Peterson and Skyler Chubak.
(Palak Jayswal|The Salt Lake Tribune) Tea Zaanti's patio is shown on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022 in Sugar House.
Its interesting how lowering a patio into the ground just a little bit and adding planters of tall green grasses would make the patio at Tea Zaanti feel like its in a cozy forest, but the effect is pleasant.
This tea and wine bar at 1944 S. 1100 East in Sugar House has some construction happening out front on 1100 East, and you can occasionally hear it from the patio. But Scott Lyttle, who co-owns the cafe with his wife, Becky Lyttle, said he expects the construction to be wrapped up by the end of June, leaving months of warm weather just waiting to be filled with patio lounging.
The surrounding mature trees, strings of lights, large shade umbrellas and numerous places to sit make this patio a serene spot to linger with a cup of tea, a glass of wine from the rotating list, or a bite to eat. Tea Zaanti just started carrying bagels from The Bagel Project on the weekends.
While the weather is warm, Tea Zaanti will be hosting live music on the patio every Friday at 5:30 p.m. Every other Thursday night they hold a wine tasting, and the $15 admission includes a menu item and a sampling of two different hard-to-find natural wines. Attendees are welcome to sit outside for the wine tasting.
For the duration of the construction, 1100 East will be only northbound; you can turn left from there into Tea Zaantis parking lot. Or you can access the lot from the back by turning east onto Hollywood Avenue from 900 East then turning north onto McClelland St.
(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Tables sit on the patio at Sugar Space in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 17, 2024.
Tucked away at the end of a dead-end street, in an elbow formed by Interstate 15 and Interstate 80 thats just inside the Fairpark neighborhoods boundaries, lies a green oasis at Sugar Space Arts Warehouse, at 132 S. 800 West.
Sugar Space has been a west-side hub for events since 2015, but owner and executive director Brittany Reese opened the Sugar Space Cafe after COVID-19 in an effort to activate the space when events werent going on. The cafe is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Reese added a cute patio to the front of the Sugar Space building at the end of last summer, and its still somewhat of a hidden gem, with little foot traffic. With its potted plants and flowers, strings of lights, small round tables and a view of the large green island in the center of the street, all surrounded by trees, this patio is a calming place to hang out.
On Sundays, brunch is available all day, with menu items including options like the breakfast burrito, classic pancakes, pulled pork sandwich and more. Theres also an extensive coffee and tea menu, and since Sugar Space has a full liquor license, it also serves several house cocktails, cocktail specials, spirits, beer and wine.
An apartment building has been under construction next door for years, and you can hear that construction from the patio, except on Saturdays and Sundays when workers take a break. Reese said the side of the building that faces Sugar Space is almost done, however, so any noise should be moving to the south end of the complex this summer.
(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) The patio space at TF Brewing in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 17, 2024.
When Kevin and Britt Templin opened TF Brewing in 2018 at 936 S. 300 West in Salt Lake Citys Granary District, the patio was a key component of their vision, said co-owner Britt Templin via email.
The patio started out much smaller than it is now, but once the Templins acquired the building west of the brewery in 2019, they were able to enlarge their outdoor space into the wide-open expanse it is today.
Filled with long wooden tables, Adirondack chairs, shady umbrellas, trees, potted plants and fire pits, and decorated with strings of lights, this patio doesnt have a bad seat.
During the weekends, the patio fills up quickly, Templin said, but if you find your spot, its tough to leave.
A typical evening on the TF Brewing patio features people chatting and playing games like cornhole, chess and Jenga; music playing; and dogs lounging. Grab one of TFs many lagers or other beers, a cocktail, or some food from the food truck, then relax and sit for a spell. Most Sundays during warm weather, you can hang out on the patio and enjoy Slow Pour Sundays, a DJ set featuring only records.
(Dee & Cory Productions) Mountain West Cider's patio, The Garten, is shown full of people on Friday, May 10, 2024, during the Queer Food Feastival.
Mountain West Ciders patio, The Garten, at 425 N. 400 West, is one of the few outdoor gathering places in Salt Lake Citys Marmalade neighborhood. And recently, it got a bit of an update.
Cidery co-owners Jeff and Jennifer Carleton closed The Garten at the end of 2022 with the aim of opening a restaurant in that space in 2023, Jeff Carleton said. But the plans for the restaurant fell through, and The Garten remained, opening officially for the season with the Queer Food Feastival earlier in May.
The Garten has got a new look, though, that patio lovers will appreciate. Theres now enough seating for about 200 people, and the addition of extra bathrooms, shade sails, umbrellas, landscaping with trees, and sidewalks enhances the overall experience.
The stage has also been moved from the west end of The Garten to the east end, which Carleton said should help attract more attention from the street. The Garten hosts live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and every Tuesday is bingo.
The full-service bar in The Garten features Mountain West ciders like Ruby and Desolation Prickly Pear, as well as cider from other local producers, including Scion Cider and Etta Place Cidery. Try the grapefruit-infused cider Pom Paloma this summer season. The bar also comes stocked with local beer, plus spirits from local distillers. A rotating variety of food trucks provides food options.
Watch for The Gartens new neon sign, coming soon.

Theres a rumour going around that the number-one pastime in Vancouver is discovering the newest patios before anyone else, just for bragging rights. As if we Vancouverites have nothing better to do but hope for sun and try to claim it for ourselves.
Will I say who started this ridiculous rumour? No. But I will say that just in time for this weekends sunny forecast, Coal Harbours newest rooftop patio Lavantine officially opens its doors on June 4. Located at the Azur Legacy Collection Hotel, the rooftop is part open-concept kitchenserving up dishes inspired by the Levant-region and the fabulous Pacific Northwest ingredientsand part Skybar, which has a decidedly chic Daniel Craigs Bond sounding vibe.
Chefs Shyam Longani and Daniel Kenney are at the culinary helm of the lush, garden-like restaurant. Theyre doling out Eastern Mediterranean coastal-inspired dishes, such as green falafel with maple tahini, small plates like kibbeh (with mozzarella, beef, jalapeo and coconut), and entrees for the table like whole branzino with smoked pepper and lemon or lamb shank tagine with wild rice, saffron, pistachio, sour cherry and garlic labneh.
The cocktail menu created by bar manager Serhii Kulikov is no less bold. From the rahat lokum old fashioned thats inspired by Turkish delight, to the pandan cheesecake delight that brings the delicate flavour of pandan front and centrebragging rights for knowing the newest patio included, of course.

Cleaning a patio can be made a lot easier with the help of some cleaning solutions. But not every cleaner is suitable for different patio types. In fact, many common solutions are actually harmful for patios and the surrounding plants.
There are ways to clean patio pavers without a pressure washer, but it's important to make sure we're not using harmful chemicals instead.
We spoke to some outdoor cleaning experts to learn what we should avoid using when cleaning our patios and what we can use instead to achieve the same effect.
'Never use vinegar to clean a patio,' says Mause Ramirez, owner of MCS Cleaning Services. This is because it can damage the surrounding grass and plants.
Trevor Knight, technical garden and driveway specialist for Marshalls expands on this: 'Despite often being a popular choice for cleaning the patio, vinegar can harm the biodiversity of your garden.'
Just like vinegar, other acidic cleaning solutions should be avoided at all times.
'Any product with an acid composition has the propensity to cause burn/etching marks in natural stone and even wooden-based patios,' explains Delah Gomasi, Director of MaidForYou.
Trevor Knight agrees, highlighting the importance of protecting your patio's surface: 'The use of acidic solutions should be avoided, particularly on calcareous pavers such as those made from limestone. Use on these pavers can lead to irreparable damage of the material.'
'If you're looking to clean your patio and pavers, you'll want to use a non-acid cleaning solution or no cleaning solution at all,' says Delah. He recommends the Wet & Forget Moss, Mold, Mildew, & Algae Stain Remover at Amazon as a non-acidic cleaning solution.
'Bleach is harmful to plants and, therefore, can harm your gardens biodiversity. Any bleach solution that runs off of the patio onto grass or plants when cleaning can cause significant harm to these, likely causing them to die,' explains Trevor.
'Over time, bleach can also lead to discoloration and irreparable damage to paving slabs, particularly those that are man-made such as concrete slabs,' he adds.
This isn't exclusive to bleach, either: 'Using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners can damage furniture, plants, or grass. Pay attention to the instructions, as every chemical or cleaning product is labelled by experts,' says Mause.
As we learned in how to pressure wash a patio - you should always start on the lowest possible pressure. High pressure can seriously damage patios of any kind, and is unnecessary as low water pressure will generally clean the patio anyway. Niki O'Brien, operations manager at Custom Exteriors LLC, explains what's worked best for them:
'When we clean patios or porches, whether wood, synthetic, or even concrete, we start with the lowest pressure water and no cleaning materials. While many cleaning products are safe for deck cleaning, we find that the best solution is to start with low-pressure water, and we're able to get most areas clean just by using this method.'
Once you know what to avoid, it doesn't take too long to get the patio looking clean. While you're at it, getting stuck into some spring patio prep will leave it looking ready for these warmer days.

My husband and some friends and I recently booked this and it was lovely from start to finish.
I cant emphasize enough how gorgeous the space is and the restaurant that awaits has an impressive farm-fueled seasonal menu created by executive chef, Aaron Allen with ingredients provided by Hotel Versailles on-site farmer Benjamin Briggs operating out of Sycamore Bridge Farm. Meats are supplied through Winners Quality Meats and Kings Poultry Farm. Not to be outdone by the food, the beverage program is equally impressive with the restaurant boasting a Certified Executive Bourbon Steward only one of four destinations in Ohio to offer one on staff.
For patrons who would like to make an entire evening and overnight of it can book the Ohio Staycation package to reserve an overnight stay and return chauffeur service the next morning.
The van they picked us up in was new and beautiful, the hospitality was evident from the time we walked through the door, our meals a Thai popcorn chicken ($28) dish with coconut jasmine rice, dried chili lime sauce, sasame pickled cucumbers, Thai basil, roasted nori buttermilk dressing and toasted peanuts and a silky delicious monk fish that was the special of the day wowed.
The 1819 burger ($21) was massive, piled high with hulls trace cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, dijonnaise, pickles, shoe string onions and topped with an optional farm fresh egg ($3) was delicious and filling.
A charred carrot salad ($13) with pickled beets, salted pistachio, arugula, chevre and a green goddess dressing was delightful and fresh and the roasted brussel sprouts ($13) with Spanish chorizo, manchego cheese, honey vinegar, potato crumble and fresh dill was not to be missed.
The Hotel and restaurant, which opened on May 25, 2022 has turned into a favorite and right now with the AmuseBUS promotion is the time to go. When we left we were each given a gift bag with chocolate, a gift card and a thank you. They clearly know how hospitality works and made us feel not only welcome, but even better, appreciated. The drinks, wine and bourbon offerings were every bit as impressive as the setting and the food.
With Versailles Poultry Days coming up in mid-June its the perfect time for a road trip and this is the patio and place to navigate to before or after the festival to make a complete day, or overnight of it.

Q: I recently moved and I only have a small patio, but I want to grow some fruit and vegetables this summer. What edibles would grow well over the summer in pots?
A: While most people think they need to have large gardens to grow vegetables, there are now many cultivars of popular edible plants that have been bred to grow in containers and smaller spaces.
Because its early June, your best bet would be to find cultivars of warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and eggplant that stay relatively small and compact. Most herbs like basil, parsley, oregano, and dill are also well-suited to container growing. While strawberries will grow well in containers, there are new cultivars of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries that stay small.
Be sure to read cultivar descriptions to make sure you will have enough space for each plant, and note that all these plants do best with at least six hours of sun, consistent watering, and regular feeding.

The Best Patio and Garden Deals in Amazon's Outlet Now - PEOPLE

Made in Germany for over 70 years, Krcher pressure washers are ten times more searched-for than the next most popular brand. They range from the portable K2 Compact (reviewed below) to this big, heavy and very powerful K7, which must be regarded as the big daddy of domestic pressure washers although its not necessarily the right choice for everyone.
The heavy weight comes from the motor and components needed to deliver the immense 180 bars of pressure. I found it very difficult to manoeuvre on its two wheels but once in place, it can largely sit in one spot the pressure from the end of the 10m hose is high enough to clean large areas of decking or patio extremely quickly. I attacked a decades-old, grime-encrusted garden table for just 20 seconds and it came up looking brand new.
The wand although you may prefer to think of it as a rifle has three nozzles which you twist to select: a low pressure spray for applying detergent, a high pressure, spinning dirt blaster jet (youll use this with the patio cleaner attachment, bought separately) and a vario jet which lets you choose between six settings for different jobs like decking, paving or car cleaning. Theres also a Boost function which adds an extra 15 bar for 30 seconds. Its like getting a power-up on Mario Kart.
The K7 along with other models at the top of the Krcher range comes with Smart Control, linking it to a phone app. Being old, Im generally against that kind of thing but this app is helpful. Tell it what youre cleaning car, bike, wood, glass, stone and so on and it will tell you what attachment and what settings to use and how to get the best results step by step.
A foot-wide patio cleaner attachment is sold separately for 121.99, along with a bottle of patio detergent which slots neatly into a feeder dock on the main unit. Together theyre a formidable force. Every sweep of the circular cleaner head reveals a foot of sparkling fresh decking or paving, like waving a massive magic wand - just make sure theres somewhere for the dirty water to run off onto.
When youre done the hose winds up, the power cord fits in a mesh bag and the lance slots into a clasp. Its all very neat: only the big patio cleaner head doesnt have a slot. So although its a big unit, the K7 doesnt take up too much space in the garage.
In all honesty, a less powerful washer like the 145 bar Krcher K5 or the 130 bar Krcher K4 is enough for most household jobs and some come bundled with soft car-cleaning attachments, which this doesnt. But I had to make it the overall winner because, for anyone asking what is the best pressure washer? this is it.
Also, in all honesty, because Im addicted to the power. They say that to a man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. The same with the K7. Give it a week and there wont be a single thing in your garden you havent blasted and youll be knocking on your neighbours doors asking to do theirs.
