Plants you can walk on are attractive additions to pathways. These low-lying perennials can withstand heavy foot traffic, release pleasant odors when crushed, smother weeds, and cushion your step in the narrow spaces between bricks or flagstones.
"You can use 'steppables' for all kinds of applications," said Kathy Gurnee, owner of Green Thumb Landscaping in Clinton, Wash.
"You can use them as groundcover in lieu of bark," she said. "On patios, pathways, rock walls and crevices. I like them around the bottoms of trees. They're also good for living roofs and living walls. They deliver a beautiful resilience."
Walkables generally are defined as creeping plants that don't exceed 12 inches in height, said John Schroeder, president of Valleybrook International Ventures Inc., a family-owned horticultural operation in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The company's line of "Jeepers Creepers" includes around 100 varieties of low-to-the-ground herbs, mints, evergreens, ivy, moss and more.
"I like them for lawn repair or replacement," he said, adding that he stripped 900 square feet of turf grass from his own front yard and replaced it with creeping mazus, a dense, ground-hugging plant.
"It's just a gorgeous lawn application," Schroeder said. "I set out some 1-inch plugs at 12-inch spacings in September, and by July, they were one solid mass.
"They give me an inch-thick, lawn-like cover with purple flowers for a few weeks out of the year and no more mowing. Just some trimming and weeding around the edges."
Many walkable plants are drought-resistant, while others perform well in shade, on hard-to-maintain slopes, covering bulb gardens, spilling from containers or protecting high-use areas.
A sampling:
For areas with moderate to heavy foot traffic: Corsican sandwort has moss-like foliage with white flowers in spring. Does well in damp, dry or shaded settings. Celestial spice pratia has tiny green leaves covered by deep blue flowers all summer.

For fragrance: Corsican mint, the smallest of the mint family. It delivers a pleasant crme-de-menthe fragrance when crushed. It also does well in shade. Creeping thyme is a fast-growing groundcover that gives off a spicy scent. Most thymes are drought-tolerant and can survive moderate traffic.
As a lawn substitute: Alpine moss ear grows into a dense carpet with white flowers in summer. It thrives in dry climates. Blue star creeper is a dark green perennial producing soft blue flowers through summer. Creeping mazus, with its low mat of green leaves studded by small lavender flowers, tolerates hot, humid summers.

Crdoba muestra la belleza de sus Patios en Pars Muchas de las obras expuestas han sido cedidas por Diario CORDOBA. El Colegio Espaol difunde la fiesta en unas jornadas patrimoniales

Con motivo de la celebracin de las jornadas europeas de patrimonio, el Colegio Espaol de Pars inaugur ayer una muestra fotogrfica dedicada a los Patios de Crdoba con la que se pretende publicitar el carcter nico de una de las fiestas ms destacadas de la ciudad, reconocida el pasado ao como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad .
La exposicin, compuesta de unas 40 obras entre fotografas y carteles con los Patios como protagonista, traslada a la cit universitaria de Pars los rincones de Crdoba gracias al esfuerzo de Juan Ojeda, cordobs a cargo de la direccin del Colegio Espaol de Pars, quien destacaba lo idneo de su pblico, "ms de 7.000 estudiantes, entre ellos doctores e investigadores con inquietud viajera".
La muestra pictrica se ver, a su vez, acompaada por la reproduccin continua de cinco videos promocionales de Crdoba y sus patios, que facilitarn ms informacin de la celebracin a los visitantes. Los promotores de la muestra han sido el Ayuntamiento de Crdoba y la Fundacin Viana, que han contado con la colaboracin especial de Diario CORDOBA, que ha enviado la coleccin de acuarelas sobre los patios que ofreci a sus lectores, las fotografas ganadoras del I Concurso de Cartel de Patios , y ejemplares de la Gua de los Patios que edit este diario con motivo del concurso.
Jacinto Maas, director de Comunicacin y Relaciones Institucionales de Cajasur, una de las instituciones colaboradoras en el evento, subray el papel central del Palacio de Viana, "un museo dedicado a los patios", en el panorama cultural de Crdoba, siendo "uno de sus mximos exponentes, donde ms de la mitad de sus visitantes son de procedencia francesa".
Uno de los momentos centrales de la exposicin es la presentacin institucional que se realizar hoy y que contar con la presencia del alcalde de Crdoba, Jos Antonio Nieto, el embajador espaol y el de la Unesco. En ella se servir una degustacin de productos cordobeses, con salmorejo, flamenquines e ibricos de Los Pedroches.
La muestra se dilatar durante la prxima semana pese al cierre de las jornadas patrimoniales.
