Plano To Allow Dogs On Restaurant Patios - December 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (credit: MARTIN GERTEN/AFP/Getty Images)

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - The Plano City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to allow dogs at outdoor restaurant patios. Those restaurants that choose to allow dogs will need to apply for a permit and adhere to health guidelines set by the city.

I think the citizens of Plano and I know our customers would be delighted, said Buddy Cramer, owner of Katy Trail Ice House in Plano at Tuesdays council meeting. His restaurant led the push to change the citys pet restrictions.

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and councilwoman Andre Davidson both said that they were reluctant to vote for the change. Both also said that they would not want to dine at a restaurant that allowed dogs. However, they agreed with the rest of the council that the decision on whether or not to allow dogs should be left up to the individual businesses.

I think the owner has the right to decide what cliental he serves, said Davidson.

While the city said that it had received some comments from people against allowing dogs at restaurants, nobody at Tuesdays council meeting spoke in opposition.

Dallas, Houston and San Antonio all let restaurants decide if dogs are allowed on their outdoor patios. According to the City of Plano, out of more than 30,000 restaurants in those three Texas cities, less than 100 restaurants actually allow dogs. It is unclear how many restaurants in Plano are interested in permitting dogs.

Plano City Council votes to allow dogs at some restaurant patios - December 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dogs will soon be welcome customers on the patios at some Plano restaurants -- the Plano City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow dogs to sit one table over if the restaurant chooses.

Dogs aren't going to be running rampant in the Collin County city's restaurants, though. It's not a blanket ordinance -- any Plano restaurant with a patio wanting dogs has to apply for a permit.

The city council said it will likely affect five establishments, but this makes many canine companions happy.

The Katy Trail Icehouse in Plano wants pets as much as their people.

"If you don't want 'em, you don't have to have 'em here," said Tucker Covington, the general manager of the business.

The Katy Trail Icehouse Outpost in uptown Dallas is a haven for dogs, pups and their partners. When the restaurant expanded to Plano last June, the owners believed the same rules applied.

"When we opened, we didn't know you weren't allowed to have dogs on the patio in Plano," said Covington.

At the Plano City Council meeting, the debate was put to rest. The ordinance requires all patio tables and chairs to be easily cleanable and sanitized, and animal waste must be picked up within five minutes and disposed of in an appropriate receptacle away from the kitchen.

While on duty, the wait staff cannot pet dogs, and the patio must be continually cleaned.

"There is some pet owner responsibility," said Natalie Graham who supports the ordinance. "You can't let your dog get in someone's face or up on their table while they're eating. There's some etiquette to it, but it's not that complicated."

Plano Restaurants May Soon Allow Dogs - December 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (credit: Fiona Green)

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - Dog lovers may soon have a new option when dining out in Plano. The city is considering changing the rules to let restaurants to apply for a variance that would permit dogs on outdoor patios. But not everybody in Plano is on board with the idea of having mans best friend join the meal.

The issue is being spearheaded by a Plano restaurant owner, and the Plano City Council is scheduled to vote on it Tuesday night. If the proposal passes, restaurants would be allowed to open their patios to dogs. But they would first have to file for a permit.

There would be requirements. Dogs would have to remain on a leash at all times. Diners would not be allowed to feed the animals any table scraps. Patio areas would have to be hosed down before each shift. And any mishaps would have to be cleaned up immediately.

The proposal has prompted a lot of comments on the citys website, both for and against the idea of dogs on restaurant patios.

I think it should be allowed. We love our dogs and its so difficult to find places in North Texas that allow dogs on their patio.

Gross. Poop is already not scooped at parks (as attested to by the new signs the city has been putting up), and I dont want to see it or smell it while Im eating, no matter how quickly it gets cleaned up.

I like dogs, but probably would avoid a dining patio with dogs or rowdy children. Dogs often shake their bodies when they stand and hair usually flies.

Plano is becoming a more urban city. Urban dwellers tend to be pet people and want to have the ability to go to their favorite patio with their pets.

Yes, but dog owners need to be held accountable to make sure their dogs are safe.

Bone Appétit? Plano To Consider Whether To Allow Pooches On Patios - December 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A vote of the Plano City Council Tuesday night could open restaurant patios to diners and their dogs.

The issue was raised by the Katy Trail Ice House Outpost that opened last summer in Plano. The original Ice House in Dallas is a popular spot for Fido and friends, and operators wanted to do the same in Plano.

The ordinance requires all dogs to be on a leash. You wouldnt be able to feed scraps from the table. All doggie mishaps would have to be immediately cleaned up, and the patio would need to be hosed down before each shift.

If the measure passes, each restaurant that wants to allow dogs on the patio would have to file for permits to do so.

Geoff Heinicke with the Plano Health Department says the proposed dog-friendly ordinance has generated a lot of comment much more than the usual agenda item.

The city has received over 100 responses on Facebook and Engage Plano, Heinicke told KERA. As of Monday afternoon, 103 were in favor, while 36 weren't in favor.
