The eagle has landed... on a display cabinet in a lounge in DORSET.

Wendy Morrell couldnt believe her eyes when the huge eagle swooped into her front room while she was watching TV.

The 18ins tall Russian Steppe eagle flew through open patio doors and into her lounge, knocking over ornaments with its 4ft wingspan as it landed on the wooden display cabinet before pecking at a bowl of pot pourri.

Wendys friend Karen Ruddlesden put on a winter jacket and glove for protection and tried to lure the big bird down.

When that failed the pair placed pieces of ham outside in a bid to tempt it but with no joy.

They then phoned a bird of prey rescue centre near their home in Poole and an expert spent 30 minutes getting the young eagle off its makeshift perch using a dead chick.

It was then reunited with its owner and falconer James Moore who revealed the young bird was called Storm and was being trained to ward off seagulls at a nearby landfill site.

It had been reported missing three days prior to turning up at Wendys house after it was frightened by a loud bang and broke its tethers.

Wendy, a retired maths teacher aged in her 50s, said: We were about to watch the final of the French Open tennis when this big black thing swooped into the room.

Cat flap and unlocked patio doors used to target Coventry homes

Eight homes have been burgled in less than a week in a tiny part of Coventry.

Six of the break-ins happened when a burglar crept in through unlocked patio doors while police think he used a cat flap to break into the other two properties.

Police believe the same offender may be behind the spate of burglaries.

The homes affected are less than half a mile away from each other in the Cheylesmore area.

The day after the last burglary a 32-year-old Coventry man was arrested and questioned.

Sgt Jane Howarth, from Canley police station, said: Officers flooded the area and through enquiries arrested a local man on suspicion of burglary. He has now been bailed pending further enquiries.

On nearly all occasions back doors and patio doors were left unlocked making it easy pickings for any would be thieves.

We will continue to patrol the area but I would appeal to local residents to review their security, locking doors and windows before they go to bed, taking keys out of locked doors and putting them in a cupboard or out of reach will reduce their chances dramatically of becoming a victim of burglary.

The first burglary happened in Cornelius Street between May 23 and 24. He struck again in the same street on May 24 before targeting a house in Seed Field Croft between May 26 and 27.

A gang armed with machetes and knives threatened to kill a couple and their three children - including a one-year-old baby - in a terrifying raid.

They also threatened to cut a mans ears off as they demanded valuable jewellery.

It is the latest in a series of raids targeting Asian families in north Manchester and Salford.

In the latest attack, four masked men smashed their way into the familys home in Broughton Park, Salford, through patio doors.

They burst in at 1am today leaving Asma Asham, her husband, Nazir, and their children, aged eleven, nine, and one, petrified.

In a raid which mirrored six others in the Cheetham Hill, Salford, and Blackley, areas in the last two months they threatened extreme violence.

The gang escaped with jewellery, watches, phones, and stole the familys black Honda Civic car.

Two of the gang escaped in the Honda and two others fled on foot.

During the raid a necklace was pulled off from Mrs Asham and threatened to slice her husbands ears off.
