Escape to the inspiring and captivating Mission Inn! - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, August 28th, 2014 Issue 35, Volume 18.

"The best part of beauty is that which no picture can express."

    -- Francis Bacon

Imagine sitting in a 100-year-old patio courtyard surrounded by vibrant red bougainvillea twining and twirling around static iron balconies. You look up and see a Della Robbia-style Madonna and Child plaque on a high Moorish-type wall with a thousand intricate curves. Red Spanish tile walkways show slight dips from a hundred years of footfall. Twittering birds flit to a fountain trickling small streams of water to separate basins. Does this sound like a peaceful, somewhat exotic destination? Does it make you want to reach for your passport and be whisked off to Spain or Morocco?

Even though this courtyard with its terra-cotta tones resembles a captivating destination like Spain, it is right here in Southern California Riverside to be exact. For me it is reminiscent of a trip to Spain. Others might be taken back to a time in Morocco or Italy but most will probably just revel in the immediate beauty of this historic hotel called the Mission Inn.

One of the joys of traveling is to be transported to a world that is inspiring and beautiful... and will serve to awaken the senses. A visit to the Mission Inn will do just that.

This National Historic Landmark has inspired many a dignitary. Ten U.S. presidents have visited, including President Richard Nixon and his wife Pat, who were married at the Mission Inn. President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy spent their wedding night at the hotel. In 1926, Crown Prince Gustavus and Princess Louise of Sweden were guests.

The Mission Inn is close enough for lunch, and distant enough for an overnight stay. Built in "Mission Revival" style, the hotel has had various construction phases, but the first wing was completed by Frank Miller in 1903, over a 100 years ago.

This architectural showpiece is furnished with priceless treasures and unique objects that Miller collected during his world Advertisement [ Fallbrook Mattress ] travels. He amassed a staggering amount of bells, 400 of which can be found on the grounds of the inn. Tiffany stained glass windows, Chinese vases and various architectural accoutrements unite in a delightful array of the eclectic like a small-scale Hearst Castle.

Guests are free to wander most of the property and discover a myriad of architectural wonders a Spanish-style chapel, fountains, reflecting pools, intricately fashioned doors and colorful tiled roofs. Like the Hearst Castle, there is something fascinating around every corner.

House burgled while occupants were on holiday - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

POLICE are appealing for information after a Darlington home was burgled while the occupants were on holiday.

The burglar smashed the glass patio doors at the rear of a house on Arthur Street and stole high-value items including two laptop computers, a Wii games console, Wii balance board, lots of games and some tools.

The break-in happened sometime between 10am on Monday, August 11 and 11am the following day.

PC Jim Edwards of Darlington police said: The owners of the property were away when the burglary occurred and are devastated that their home was invaded while they were on holiday and that their property was stolen.

They are appealing to anyone who has information regarding this burglary to contact police on 101.

Homeowners are advised to make a trusted friend, neighbour or family member aware they are going away so that the vacant property can be checked in their absence on a regular basis.

We would also suggest that people take appropriate security measures when away such as using timing devices for lights, security marking property and ensuring all property is as secure as possible particularly now the darker nights are encroaching.

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious during the times outlined above should contact police on 101.

Ply Gem Industries to Acquire Simonton Windows - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CARY, N.C. -- Ply Gem Holdings, Inc., a leading manufacturer of exterior building products in North America, through its subsidiary, Ply Gem Industries, has signed an agreement with Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (FBHS) to acquire Simonton Windows - one of America's leading vinyl window and patio door manufacturers with revenues over $300 million. As part of the deal, Ply Gem will also acquire all assets of SimEx, a vinyl and PVC foam extrusion manufacturing operation in West Virginia, from Fortune Brands. The transaction, valued at approximately $130 million, aligns with Ply Gem's plans for growing strategically while contributing to earnings growth through targeted acquisitions of complementary specialty product lines.

The transaction combines two leading low-maintenance, energy-efficient residential window businesses under the Ply Gem umbrella, and is expected to:

Create a more comprehensive, balanced portfolio by combining Simonton's strength in the repair and remodeling (R&R) market with Ply Gem's leadership in the new construction market.

Establish a stronger national residential windows platform with manufacturing scale and channel distribution advantages to serve both R&R and new construction customers.

Generate opportunities for operational efficiencies to enhance customer service and propel future profitability and growth, core tenets of Ply Gem's strategic vision.

"The addition of Simonton Windows is in full alignment with our strategic growth plan and will better balance the mix of end markets that we serve while strengthening our core capabilities and contributing significantly to revenues in the future," said Gary E. Robinette, Ply Gem's President and CEO. "A prominent brand, Simonton has consistently been ranked a leader in the J.D. Powers Window and Patio Doors Satisfaction StudySM and is known for exceptional quality and service. Simonton Windows ideally complements our existing portfolio of window products."

Robinette adds, "Simonton is a perfect fit for the Ply Gem culture, and we are confident this new addition will help us achieve synergies and competitive advantages that drive growth in top line sales and customer and shareholder value."

Expected to close in October pending regulatory approval, Ply Gem is funding the deal through a combination of cash-on-hand and new debt. After giving effect to anticipated cost savings and synergies, the acquisition is expected to be credit accretive.

Ply Gem will operate Simonton Windows as a stand-alone business unit, similar to the way the company's existing Siding and Window groups operate today. Simonton customers will continue to be serviced through its existing relationships.

"We will be very pleased to welcome the experienced Simonton management team to Ply Gem when the deal is closed," said Robinette. "We look forward to working with them - and all Simonton associates - in the years ahead to build and maintain the best exterior building products company in the industry," said Robinette.

No decision on protested Fins expansion - August 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Taggart Houck | Aug 21, 2014

Georgetown A hearing on the proposed expansion of Fins on Route 1 drew five nearby residents.

Fins is seeking to expand into space previously occupied by a mattress store creating 40 additional interior seats. It has also asked to expand outside with a 614-square-foot patio with 40 exterior seats.

Residents from Beachaven and the local community protested the application, saying the outdoor expansion would be too noisy, especially late at night. The community, located immediately across the street from the restaurant off Parsonage Road, said the noise would not only be bothersome but would also have a negative impact on property value.

Owner of Fins Ale House Jeff Hamer presented his request for outdoor speakers on the patio. Providing background music, he said, is necessary for the restaurant's Route 1 location. He said the two speakers he would likely be using are eight inches each.

The idea is to be able to have a conversation outside, while sitting outside. Not to drown out the conversation, he said.

He said the patio and speakers would be necessary to compete with rival restaurants in the area, which already have patio areas and speakers, such as Big Fish Grill and Applebee's.

Attorney Adam Gerber of Dover, who represented Hamer at the hearing, passed out 572 letters received from patrons supporting the expansion of Fins.

Opponents noted each letter contained the same message with different signatures and addresses. Many letters displayed addresses in Lewes, Milton, Millsboro, and as far away as Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. Only a few addresses in the stack read Rehoboth Beach.

Permanent Beachaven resident Wonda Mackiewicc testified she is concerned about noise. Mackiewicc said her condominium is in the building closest to Fins, and at night, she can hear employees talking behind the restaurant and customers slamming their car doors.
