Steveston plagued by home break-ins -
October 9, 2014 by

A rash of residential break-ins in Steveston have area residents worried as in at least a couple of incidents, the overnight thefts have seen homeowners encounter the bandit face-to-face.
While Richmond Mounties are trying to identify the culprits, Richmond RCMP Cpl. Stephanie Ashton urged area residents to report all suspicious activity, which may help lead investigators to those who are responsible.
The most recent one apparently occurred early Tuesday, around 2 a.m., when a resident awoke to find a thief in the house.
According to the City of Richmonds interactive Criminal Activity Map (tinyurl.com/RichmondCrime)which is updated daily and shows where residential/commercial break-ins, and thefts from car occurthere were four houses struck on Shuswap Avenue and Skagit Drive, mid morning on Sunday, Sept. 21, between 5 and 7:30 a.m. Three of the break-ins were successful, with unlocked front, back and patio doors being used to gain entry.
Then on the weekend of Sept. 27 and 28, there were five break-ins on the 3100 block of Steveston Highway and nearby Springthorne Crescent, with three between 5 and 7 a.m. Two detached garages who had left their doors unlocked were targetted.
Two other homes were targeted just down the road that same weekend, on 6th Avenue, both between 3 and 4 a.m., one of which was successful.
Weve definitely seen a spike in break-ins and theft from auto, Ashton told The Richmond Review Tuesday.
So what are police doing about it? And what can residents do?
Ashton said police are urging residents to report all break-ins and attempted break-ins, which might provide them the crucial detail that could lead to the perpetrators being identified and arrested.
Local volunteers, through the Blockwatch, Crimewatch and Lock-out Auto Crime programs are doing their part too, including doing overnight patrols in neighbourhoods. Police patrol areas whenever they receive reports of an interupted break-in or suspicious activity.

Les Trois Tilleuls Htel & Spa, on the banks of the Richelieu River, has been a go-to destination for bon vivants for 40 years.
French gastronomy, rare vintage liquor and indulgent spa treatments have defined the high life at this rambling, upscale waterfront inn, so popular for romantic sojourns, sunset weddings and other celebrations. But four decades is a long time to party, and la belle vie has taken its toll. Its high time for a facelift and a fresh direction.
Say no more. Enter the new owners, Michel Barrette, comedian, actor and Radio-Canada host, and his partner, real estate entrepreneur David Sepulchre, who are giving Les Trois Tilleuls a fabulous second debut.
Contemporary new look
Its curtains for the dowdy drapes. Say sayonara to ruffles and doilies. We bid adieu to dated French bedroom sets, wave farewell to faded carpets and say toodle-oo to tables of rustic pine.
Les Trois Tilleuls new look is clean, crisp and contemporary. The lobby, bar and dining room have been redecorated with cool taupe leather seating, natural wood floors and pure white walls. New glass patio doors let in the light and broaden the mesmerizing river views.
Life has moved outdoors too, while there still is fine weather. Sepulchre and Barrette are betting on an endless summer, with a new large deck shaded by colourful patio umbrellas and overlooking gardens and tinkling fountains. They have even added a chic outdoor living room, with sofas for lounging and gauzy fabric separating each space for privacy.
It wouldnt be an authentic Richelieu River scene without a lot of leisure boats, so Tilleuls has added a 20-slip marina. Thats right you can power up your yacht or paddle your canoe and stop in for lunch.
Food and drink
We still represent the high life, said Barrette, who lives across the street from the inn, was married there and has been a regular client, but we have introduced affordable options.

This is the moment a gang brazenly break into a familys home - only to come back and steal their car off the driveway three days later.
The gang of four men were captured on CCTV using a screwdriver to break into a family home in Bolton.
And it is believed they targeted the property especially for the Audi cars parked outside - ignoring a laptop and iPad in the smash-and-grab raid.
The thieves first struck at 2.20pm on Wednesday, September 24, knocking on the front door to establish no-one was home before climbing over the gate of the property in Farnworth.
They then used what is thought to be a screwdriver to smash the patio doors.
In the house for less than two minutes, they stole a piggybank and briefcase containing jewellery, documents and spare keys to the familys two Audis.

Unfortunately the home-owners, a family of four who do not want to be identified, only realised the spare keys had been taken when the thieves returned on Saturday.
While the family were in the house, the gang strolled up the front drive and casually unlocked one of the Audis before driving away.

Care failings led to death at home -
September 22, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
FAILINGS werehighlighted at a Weymouth care home after a 90-year-old man fell and later died, a coroner has ruled.
William Edward Armstrong died shortly after falling at Agincourt Care Home in Weymouth on February 18, 2012.
Speaking at an inquest at County Hall in Dorchester, assistant coroner for Dorset Richard Middleton found there had been failings at the care home but he added that the death of Mr Armstrong was not a result of negligence.
Mr Armstrong, known as Billy, was found by a care worker in the early hours of the morning collapsed at the bottom of a fire exit stairwell.
The coroner issued a narrative verdict. He suggested Mr Armstrong had left his room through his patio door undetected between 5.30am and 6.45am.
He said an inadequate warning system failed to alert staff which allowed Mr Armstrong to wander to a nearby stairwell and open a fire exit door that should have been locked.
The coroner suggested Mr Armstrong then either slipped or fell, hitting his head in the process. He was taken to Dorset County Hospital and died later that evening.
Pathologist Dr Mark Deverill, speaking as a witness, recorded Mr Armstrongs death as natural. He said he suffered from pulmonary edema and bronchial pneumonia.
The coroner agreed with this statement but suggested on the evidence heard hypothermia was also a contributing factor.
Prior to the incident, Mr Armstrong had been living with Alzheimers and suffered from dementia. He was transferred to Agincourt Care Home on January 6. He had previously been cared for by his wife, Ruth.
