Three men involved in burgling nearly 60 homes across three counties - including Cambridgeshire - havebeen jailed.
The trio used homemade tools to smash open windows and patio doors whichwould normally be considered resistant to attack.
Yesterday (Friday) Ipswich Crown Court heard how police were able to link 15 of theraids at addresses in Suffolk through distinctive footprints from trainers left atthe scene and the way the homes had been broken into.
The burglars also helped police link them to the scene of some of their crimes bytaking photos of each other on mobile phones.
Prosecutor Shauna Ritche said other raids in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire broughtthe value of goods stolen to 125,000.
Among the properties targeted were homes in Redshank Close and Jay Close inHaverhill.
As well as jewellery, cameras and computer equipment the gang took householditems including duvets, kitchen utensils and food was stolen.
Miss Ritchie said: "A number of those who reported crimes found themselves perplexedby the items stolen."
Miss Richie said that some of the jewellery was of great sentimental value and had beenhanded down from generation to generation.

For those unfamiliar with Carranza's checkered history, that might seem like good news. The Patio is a charming neighborhood theater and, even needing new seats and balcony repairs, its main auditorium is arguably even more attractive than the Music Box. A noble attempt by Kouvalis to reopen the theater in 2011, after ten years of dormancy, ended last April. The venue simply wasn't making enough money to pay for needed repairs to its heating and air conditioning systems.
Despite overly harsh criticism from Ald. Tim Cullerton that Kouvalis didn't do enough to save the theater, the Patio accomplished some impressive things in his short tenure. There was a successful Kickstarter campaign to upgrade to expensive, industry-mandated DCP projection capabilities (something Facets Multimedia's Cinematheque, the local venue that most desperately needs the changeover, has yet to do). And when second-run showings of Hollywood fare weren't profitable, Kouvalis took a chance on an adventurous programming venture with the Chicago Cinema Society. It didn't work and it was probably the wrong strategy for the blue-collar neighborhood, but Kouvalis deserves credit for trying the road less traveled.
If Kouvalis was well intentioned but not business savvy, Carranza has come across a combative bottom-liner. His operation of the now-closed Congress Theater was plagued by controversy and his early handling of the Portage Theater after buying it was a disaster. Since Carranza turned over management duties to his crony Charlie Burns, the Portage has done a better job on the PR front, but questionable practices (including Burns misinforming this writer about the theater's DCP capabilities) remain common.
The Patio has DCP-ready projection, which not only allows for newer DCP releases, but also can make Blu-ray projections look close to theatrical-worthy in quality. This, along with 35mm and 16mm projectors, gives the theater lots of programming flexibility, but it remains unclear how they will use it. So far, the schedule consists of some revivals, but also several documentaries that already played quite recently at the Portage (Mistaken for Strangers, Take Me to the River, Pay 2 Play), suggesting this initial schedule was hastily put together.
To be fair to Carranza, Kouvalis or anyone who tries to make a go of it running an independent movie theaterand especially an older one in physical declineit is a near-impossible endeavor. The mainstream movie industry has for decades seemed intent on killing off the theatrical market that was once its bread and butter. DVD releases right on the heels of theatrical windows put second-run theaters on the endangered species list. Then, the rush to go digital put many small theaters out of business or deeply in debt. Now, with video-on-demand the preferred platform for lower-budgeted films, it's an even greater challenge for an independent to counter-program against the multiplex chains.
A few years back, Music Box Theatre owner William Schopf told the Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips that the crown jewel of the city's repertory movie scene was his "tax write-off," supported mainly by his law career, building investments, and the welcome and surprising success of his movie distribution company, Music Box Films. If a well-maintained, smartly programmed and generally beloved institution like the Music Box needs such outside economic power behind it, one can only imagine what neighborhood theaters without deep pockets are up against.
Ultimately, the global and relentless push of all entertainment to at-home and mobile technology has made operating a movie theater of any kind a gamble with terrible odds. The cost-effective appeal of streaming services and video-on-demand has taken a toll not only on theaters, but on the way the public values cinema. Movies are available faster, cheaper and without much effort, which is making them much less special for generations growing up with that delivery as their standard.
Independent theaters, whether they are specialized repertory programmers or "Mom and Pop" second-run houses, require a devoted patronage that is vanishing quickly. This limits the possibilities for passionate movie missionaries and opens the door for opportunists like Carranza.
The best, last chance for a neighborhood theater like the Patio or Portage to survive in any worthy form may be a patron who can afford to take a financial loss in favor of a cultural gain. Quentin Tarantino keeps the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles open as his personal cinematic playpen and local movie buffs benefit.
Calling all Mr. or Ms. Moneybags out there who care about cinema (Mr. Scorsese? Mr. Spielberg?): we have some theaters that need your well-funded love.

Grand Forks Police say they may be close to an arrest in connection with a string of home burglaries last week. Half a dozen homes at locations all over town had electronic items stolen. We have more on this case, and what you need to know to keep your property safe this holiday season.
Police say during the latest string of burglaries, the suspect was breaking sliding glass patio doors to gain access to homes. Police say that you and your neighbors need to immediately report suspicious activity in your neighborhood.
Lt. Jim Remer, Grand Forks Police: They should probably mark their property, so they can identify it later. Write down the serial number, take a photograph of the serial number. Most of the things on this one have been electronics.
Plus, there's another factor working in favor of would be thieves during the holiday season if you don't lockup.
It gets darker much earlier now. That gives the bad guys more cover of night to walk into garages where doors are left open and into homes, where doors are left unlocked.
Plus, it's cold outside. Many of us warm up our cars. If you don't keep them locked you may find your vehicle or property inside it gone.
Lt. Jim Remer, Grand Forks Police: Somebody might jump in and take the car. Again, with property inside vehicles, try to cover it up. Place it in the trunk. So it's not visible from the outside. People use that as a crime of opportunity to break a window and grab something.
just a few quick, easy tips that could save you a lot of frustration this holiday season.
If you have any information about the recent string of burglaries you're asked to call police at: 701-787-8000. You can even text a tip to Tipster with the information and send to: 84741.

If youre choosing bi-fold doors, you need to choose big.
Unlike French windows and sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors consist of three or more doors that fold back on themselves and sit flat against one or both walls, depending if they open in the middle or at the side.
Theres no way around it, they look at their most spectacular spanning a whole wall, or even walls, and when the weathers nice, you can fold them back to open up the most stunning entertaining space.
The cost of the doors will vary, depending on the size of the opening, whether the doors are a standard size or made to measure, and what theyre made of (typically wood, UPVC or aluminium). Companies that make bespoke bi-fold doors often install them and provide a guarantee, giving you convenience and peace of mind.

A Spanish specialty is added to Caf Patios signature blend of wicker and potted palms, attracting both finicky eaters and chic shoppers.
Tourists ambling into the back streets of Pragues Star Msto quarter are confronted with a scene thats more Kabul than central Europe. There is, in Hatalsk nmst, the anticipated mix of spires and art-nouveau facades. But then, theres also a big mess. An enormous gash of brick and dirt, where once was cobble stoned street, remains, more than a year after the floods of 2002, constantly operated on by truckloads of pot-bellied workmen in coveralls. So much the worse, then, for the latest edition of Caf Le Patio, Resto Caf Le Patio, which sits on a lonely corner amid the chaos. This is a pity, because this caf/restaurant, opened last April, offers a unique product with seemingly strong potential. Tarted up in deep amber and plum hues, the interior is a largely informal space, airy and pleasant enough for casual upscale dining. Michaela Polkov, the restaurants manager, says that business has been rather slow, due in large part to the street work going on daily outside its doors. But more than enough tourists have managed to find their way here, and Polkov also boasts of a diminutive but regular local clientele. What these people get is essentially a calmer, more secluded atmosphere than what they would find at the other Caf Le Patio, located on the relatively bustling thoroughfare of Nrodn street. Le Patio, a veritable Prague institution of home furnishings stores and caf-cum-restaurants, has cultivated a signature aesthetic. Its sort of like an antiseptic casbah, with enough visual flair to qualify as having been inspired by the Levant, yet also with enough cold austerity to remind you that youre still in Europe. This style, or lifestyle as Le Patio likes to call it (which is applied to their restaurant interiors as well as the home furnishings in their shops), is not unlike what you might find in an above-average timeshare condo, or perhaps your grandmothers apartment. Different, but just sedate enough to give the wary a knowing wink; youre really not in unfamiliar territory here.
The menu at Resto Caf Le Patio, while small, is rich, heavy, and calibrated for those that tend to think in terms of hard currency. That is, foreigners and local businesspeople. Polkov describes the philosophy behind the establishment as an emphasis on caf, together with a mixture of French cuisine. The French element is composed mainly of a filet mignon served with veggies and couscous, a tri-color salad with diced salmon and French dressing, an undeniably evil chocolate mousse, and a range of galettes with goat cheese, chicken, and bacon and eggs. There is also lighter fare on offer, including fresh salmon sashimi with wasabi, bruschetta, grilled tofu with tamari sauce, and a vegetable antipasta. But the main attraction is Spanish cuisine, served in the style of La Plancha; extremely hot saucepans are used for flash-frying, without oils, a variety of vegetables and meats. Polkov says that the owners of Le Patio were eager to be the first in town to present this particular style of Spanish culinary flair. Different La Plancha patrons are offered varieties of this cuisine that range from salmon mixed with tuna and trout, to calamari on a bed of saffron risotto, and (in a nod to Iberian-Czech relations) pork medallions tossed with quail and chicken. Polkov says they plan to eventually add outside seating, thus substantially augmenting the rather small interior capacity of 45. But she allows that wont be possible any time soon, as work crews plan to continue kicking up dirt outside at least until January. It just wouldnt do to have latte-sipping guests glared at by soiled workmen slugging 10 crown beers on their lunch break.

PRAGUE has never been renowned for its Asian restaurants, but venues like Lemon Leaf may be thanked for setting a new standard of Eastern cuisine in the city. The owners imported Thai chefs to train their local staff, and the authenticity comes through in every dish from the sticky rice and creamy carrot soup with ginger to the kang fet kai (red curry chicken with coconut milk) and signature noodle dish pad thai. The menu also features more occidental recipes, with salads and light fare to please every palate. Whats more, staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is airy and relaxed.

FARTHER AFIELD: Barabizna
Five years ago, the Gmuzdeks opened the Mexican restaurant Barabizna at Zbraslav. Last year they opened again, 10 weeks after the floods rushed through the popular venue. Fortunately nothing changed -the stylish interior, great service, even their famous specialities stayed the same. These include Piri piri chicken with jalapeos peppers and cheddar cheese, fried hyena steaks, numerous side dishes and desserts like fried ice-cream with caramel and nuts or delicious tiramisu with hot raspberries. Barabizna has its stable clientele from the neighborhood, while most visitors and newcomers gladly return. The rosy and rustic interior seats about 90, and in the summer you can sit outside, day or night.
Barabizna Pod pitlem 363, Praha 5 Zbraslav tel.: 257 921 362 Open daily 11:30-23:00 No cards accepted

Vicki Halmos, who founded the Entracte Theatrix production company, uses an apt theatrical comparison when she describes the layout of her 1928 house in Midtown, where elegance in the public spaces gives way to a more relaxed feel in the familys rooms.
You open the curtains or draw them closed, Halmos says by way of analogy. Its a great house for entertaining, but it has private family areas. It can be grand and stately in some rooms, but you walk down the hall and have a laid-back experience.
When she and husband Peter were house-hunting in 1984, their sons, Nic and Greg, were little.
With little boys, I needed to have adult rooms and family rooms, she said. When I was looking at properties, Id walk into a home and think, This is going to look like a bomb went off. I cant have people walk in the front door!
But when she saw a Mediterranean-style house designed by noted society architect John Volk at 315 Clarke Ave., she knew its configuration would provide the family with plenty of options.
While she hasnt changed its style and left historical elements intact, she has added an expansive media room between the main house and a two-story out building-and-garage on the back of the lot. The room with an open-beamed ceiling, a fireplace and a stone floor has large glass sliding-glass doors with fanlights above them. They open to the landscaped back yard, swimming pool, whirlpool spa and patios.
She also ordered some renovations, which included redoing the bathrooms and the kitchen, and combining smaller rooms to make larger ones, explains Halmos, whose theater company just closed a production of The Rocky Horror Show at the Crest Theatre in Delray Beach.
Its a nice traditional house with high ceilings, good-sized bedrooms and bathrooms, and plenty of room. It sits on a 180-foot-wide lot, and we put in the swimming pool. It looks like a pond. We have enjoyed the yard, and it has lots of rare trees and native Florida plants. The yard is large, and new owners would have room to expand; they could even build tennis courts.
Today, with the boys in their 30s and her husband spending more time in Key West, where he keeps his boats, the Halmoses are ready to downsize. Theyve listed their five-bedroom, seven-bath, two-half-bath house with 9,918 square feet of living space, inside and out, with Sabra Kirkpatrick, an agent with Brown Harris Stevens, for $11.9 million.
The front door opens into a foyer, which leads to a stair hall. To the east are the living room and library. The living room features a fireplace with a wood mantel, crown moldings and French doors that open to a small patio and side garden.
